An Early Top 15 Cards from Marvel's Spider-Man

Reddit

Hello and happiest of days to each of you fun folks! I hope your day is going as well as possible! Well, the spoiler for Marvel's Spider Man was revealed the week before I am writing this up and I've got some time to review and pull out my favorite cards from the set for all casual play at kitchen tables or game stores alike. From Commander and multiplayer to Type Four and Five Color the format, tons of great things are here on queue. We'll be doing a few weeks of these and then some of the Commander sets, those new cards were made for casual so they won't be here first, they need their own spotlight.

Ready? I got cha! Let's kick this thing right on off for you all!

Honorable Mention #1. (#18. Overall) The Free Three Color Ally Lands

Oscorp Industries
Urban Retreat

I know lands can be a bit boring to a lot of you. I hear you. But too many times we've been on not enough mana for our stuff or the wrong color of mana. Enter this three color ETB tapped with alterate ways to get dropped and not count as your land for the turn. One has mayhem and then can be played from the graveyard if discarded but you'll lose two life. Then the other has webslinging to spend two to bounce at sorcery speed your tapped creature. Enjoy it!

Honorable Mention #2. (#17. Overall) - Mister Negative

Mister Negative

This seven-drop Orzhov a bit behind the curve at a 5/5 size and then two abilities in lifelink and vigilance is next! He is here because of an ETB ability to swap lives with another player. No waiting around until your upkeep, he's a Mirror Universe on legs! Then if you lost life, you draw giving you two options when you drop him! You can bring someone down from high with life gain brews or in 40 life Commander to a few life to finish them off with an attack or damage spell, or if you need to draw and find answers or refill that hand, then target someone with more life to get your card draw on! There are few circumstances where you won't wannna drop him somewhere and need to gain life to draw more? Insert his lifelink! And then people may not want to attack back into vigilance blocking to get you more life. He's a smartly done casual or Commander leader.

Honorable Mention #3. (#16. Overall) - Sun-Spider, Nimble Webber

Sun-Spider, Nimble Webber

When Trinket Mage was printed casual fans of Magic adored how it synergized with that block's Skullclamp. Sure, you could get a Sol Ring or artifact land, but everyone just did Skullclamp always every time. We even restricted the Trinket Mage in the default casual format of the day Five Color because of how much 'Clamp broke things open. This four-drop Azorius 3/2 flying is so much better since when it arrives you can Tutor for any costed Aura and Equipment. Skullclamp? Whispersilk Cloak or Mithril Coat? Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots? The Sword of X and Y cycle? Auras like Rancor? Ramp like Sword of the Animist? I'm sure you've got how brokenly awesome this is at tutoring for Voltron, Auras, Equipment, Card draw and combos! Any deck with enough to want the right one for your situation is going to want this because you can equip or enchant it later!

#15. Strength of Will

Strength of Will

Today is this combat or protection spell to save your dork either way. Your two mana in Green will give your dork indestructible and normally that's hexproof in Green to stop targeted interaction - this's way better to save from combat, mass removal, damage from burn or targeted Murders too. Then twist this dial up since now it's a Fungusaur this turn! All damage to pumps it up with counters. Play this on your Commander or best dork, cast Blasphemous Act and this will save it and grow it by +13/+13! It's just incredibly awesome strong as protection and growth too and when that colors protection is normally hexproof!

#14. Spider-Punk

Spider-Punk

This fun legendary Red two-drop is next! It's got riot to either swing on your first turn or pump it with a counter! Then our others in his kindred type share that rioting. Then no one can prevent damage from anything from Fogs to Fog Bank or protection from stuff. That's your stuff too. Then all spells and abilities of everyone are unable to be countered, and again, good for your stuff and spells, but you cannot counter your opponents' stuff or abilities too. There are some counters in Blue that don't technically counter they "exile the spell or effect" like ending the turn with Time Stop or Mindbreak Trap so run those instead. Very flavorful though!

#13. Spider-Man 2099

Spider-Man 2099

This cheap Izzet two-drop 2/3 dork is next! It's got double strike for the double damage swings and then vigilance to swing and hold back for blocks - people may not swing at you with smaller toughness stuff that may die. You cannot drop it early in the first three turns of the game too. Then in your end step if we've played a spell or land from any non-hand zone like graveyard, exile, or Command Zone then you can Bolt anything equal to his power. That can hurt foes, dorks or planeswalkers easily enough! Red loves that casting from exiling with impulsive card flow. Love that combo, keyword duo and cheap cost too. Embrace your Inner Izzet with this Commander!

#12. Sandman, Shifting Scoundrel

Sandman, Shifting Scoundrel

This fun three-drop mono-Green legendary rare is our Dirty Dozen card. Its size is equal to our land count - great on a three-drop but no evasion as a trade-off. Although he cannot be blocked with smaller power stuff though. Then once he dies, in your graveyard you can spend five mana in your graveyard at instant speed to Zombify him and a land tapped to your battlefield. Great stuff for us, so he must be here on the first list, right?

#11. Madame Web, Clairvoyant

Madame Web, Clairvoyant

Everyone enjoys various play from the top of our library and often run certain things like Future Sight or Garruk's Horde. This will let you cast Spiders from it as well as any non-dork spell you have there! Then when you swing with anything mill so you can pull this off and then get what you want too. She is so great for the winning fun times that we cannot imagine her potential.

#10. Spider-Verse

Spider-Verse

This five-drop mono-Red mythic enchantment is next! It makes your legend rules for Spider not count at all which is beloved in Commander and multiplayer circles and then when you cast a spell from any non-hand place you get a free copy and then and it's got haste if it's a critter, and then just once per turn - so any spell you cast from Fact or Fiction to Sol Ring to Ghostly Prison to Birds of Paradise can be copied for no extra mana!?!?!? Sure, it's just once per turn but note there are no other restrictions here at all.

#9. Green Goblin, Revenant

Green Goblin, Revenant

Hello Rakdos and discard into card draw fans! This five-cost fun 3/3 sized leader with a flying and deathtouch combo is next. Then he has an attack trigger for discarding and then drawing like normal...only this time you'll draw for each card you discarded this turn. That's great from Red's normal of these effects like Big Score already cast that turn to draw another to looting Faithless Looting into two more cards drawn to discard abilities like on Compulsion or Undertaker. And with a resolved Wheel effect this turn and discarded 3 or 4? That's just so good and synergetic in all the great places. Love his extra card attached. Enjoy unleashing his power.

#8. With Great Power...

With Great Power...

This fun win-con in Aura form is next! Your four-mana investment gives you an Aura that is pumped twice for each Aura or Equipment on it. Then it eats all of the damage you would take too. That first ability is great in any Voltron and Aura and I'd even toss it into my Equipment brews too. That latter is basically a reprinting and better version of Veteran Bodyguard which was just for combat damage. Toss out that awesome swinger here and then don't worry about the counter attack while tapped as long as you control this.

#7. Doctor Octopus, Master Planner

Doctor Octopus, Master Planner

This amazing flavorful seven-drop 4/8 Dimir legendary Villian is a better Lord for that team pumping them twice! Then our max hand size here is 8, and then EOT if we have fewer? Draw that number! That's bonkers and good. Just dump and draw, each of our turns too! In that color combo you can drop extra lands with lands like Terrain Generator and Artifact Dorks, and then play stuff like cheaper dorks or other things to pump, Mana Rocks to dump, and more. Get this fun little guy on!

#6. Electro, Assaulting Battery

Electro, Assaulting Battery

This is another great flavor forward meeting good power like Sandman above. This three-drop mono-Red 2/3 Villain is next! He's got flying and our Red mana doesn't end EOT kind of like a Red-shifted Green Omnath. Tap out EOT for it. Then as you cast those spells you can also make one too so that's good in or leading a Spellslinger brew and then when he leaves play from anything from bounce to even exiling you can spend mana to shoot some dork for damage, and there is no safe way to answer this ability. Nasty great value there.

#5. Gwenom, Remorseless

Gwenom, Remorseless

Hello Black fans you are about to be super happy now. Four of the next five cards are just straight up mono-Black, and an obvious Blue card too. This five-drop 4/4 deathtouch and lifelinker is my top creature in any colors! When she gets her swing on you can cast cards from the top of your library for just life paid instead of spending other resources equal to its cost, and since you are gaining life with her ability and in the color of things like Drain Life and a certain Merchant-y devotion guy, you'll be fine to do so no matter how much your starting life was or is now.

#4. Imposter Syndrome

Impostor Syndrome

This is the only non-Black one to crack our top five, but this Blue six-drop enchantment has to be here, right? When your nontoken dorks arrive, you get to make a free non-legendary copy! Enjoy this's Cloning power much!

#3. Villainous Wrath

Villainous Wrath

This five-cost combination of win-con and sweeper for not that much more mana than in-color Damnation is next! A foe is shot for life loss equal to their dork count which is great against going wide brews like Kindred ones, Hate Bears, Tokens, Flying, Aggro, even Midrange. Then you sweep them all. It's just instantly one of the best cheaper Black Wrath's you can cast.

#2. The Soul Stone

The Soul Stone

This two-drop legendary artifact in Black is next. You can tap it to make that sweet Black mana and then it's got indestructible like Darksteel ingot. Then you can tap with seven and exile your dork and it's always gone. Then you can start to use this to recur a dead creature each of your upkeeps for free. That's nice but a lot of wheels you gotta turn to make it land, but at least the dork can be a token creature so that's not bad at all.

#1. Behold the Sinister Six!

Behold the Sinister Six!

This seven-cost sorcery has all of the value of the artifact but none of the waiting! You can Zombify up to six different creatures as long as they have different names, I can think of some formats that's particularly good for, I'm sure you can too. Maybe a big deck one like Five Color would qualify. I'd prefer to just get six dorks right now and then not bother waiting with the whole one/turn and then self-exiling too. I'm sure you do! Get your Sinister Six on!

There we go! I hope you enjoyed this first run of value for this set as soon as this is ready for you to unfurl on your foes. We'll be coming back to this over time. Check it out next week!
