Most Expensive Cards in Marvel Super Heroes

Reddit

A great way to get familiar with a new Magic set is to browse the visual spoilers. After reading through a few headliners, it's easy to begin developing a feel for what the set offers in terms of gameplay.

Rather than blindly scrolling cards, however, it can be helpful to browse the set by sorting by price, from high to low. This way, the most noteworthy and desirable cards rise to the top.

This practice has the small benefit of helping you learn what cards to watch out for at your local Prerelease and Release events. Learning the most expensive cards in a new set ensures you're prepared to get the most out of your trades.

With the release of Marvel Super Heroes upon us, now is the perfect time to brush up on this list of valuable cards from Magic's newest set.

Value Concentration at the Top

Marvel Super Heroes has a different distribution of value versus other recent releases.

Typically, a set contains a couple of mythic rares valued in the $20 to $50 range as well as a couple regular rares around $8 to $10. This ensures players have a reasonable chance of cracking open something of noteworthy value from their prerelease pool.

Marvel Super Heroes is different -- at least, so far.

The Mind Stone

There is currently one (non-foil, regular printing) card selling for over $20. That card is The Mind Stone, a mythic rare with a current value of over $60!

Not to be confused with Weatherlight's Mind Stone, The Mind Stone is one of the six Infinity Stones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with psionic abilities.

Funnily enough, The Mind Stone shares a few similarities with Mind Stone: both are Artifacts that cost two mana and both tap for mana. That's where the overlap ends, however.

The Mind Stone is also indestructible and it has an ability for 5w that, once activated, blinks one of your nonland permanents each turn. While this requires the right build-around strategy, the fact that The Mind Stone is an indestructible mana rock for just 1w is already a powerful card.

Harnessing The Mind Stone to activate its infinity symbol ability is icing on the cake.

Will The Mind Stone maintain its high price tag? It's possible if the rest of the set is a dud from a value standpoint. Most likely this card settles a bit lower unless it hits Sheoldred, the Apocalypse status.

The $10 Mythic Tier

After The Mind Stone, the next most valuable cards from Marvel Super Heroes are worth significantly less. There were a few mythic rare cards in the $10-$15 range at the time of prerelease. Those cards are all Legendary and represent significant components of the Marvel universe.

Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor

First, at around $15 is Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor.

Thor's Hammer has a name, and in Magic, Mjolnir strikes fear in the heart of its opponents. An Equipment for 3r, this Hammer acts as a versatile removal spell by dealing four damage to a Creature.

Then, Mjolnir doubles all damage dealt by the Creature it equips -- that can be powerful in the right hands. An equip cost of just one generic mana is powerful, but Mjolnir can't be wielded by just any Creature. The Creature must be Legendary, Red and/or White, and a non-Villain.

Those stipulations are a bit limiting, but in the right deck this card has some real potential. It can even help clear the way of pesky blockers with its activated ability.

Thor, God of Thunder

Conveniently, another card preselling for around $10 from Marvel Super Heroes is Thor, God of Thunder himself.

Thor, God of Thunder costs 3rr for a 5/5 God Warrior Hero with Flying and some extra abilities.

His first one allows you to cast an Equipment, Instant, or Sorcery card from your graveyard, which gives you some nice card advantage. Thor's second ability is even stronger -- he damages any target whenever you cast a noncreature spell.

In other words, if you cast Thor, God of Thunder and can untap with him still alive, you're likely to win the game.

Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu

The third noteworthy mythic rare card also selling for around $10 is Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu.

Shang-Chi and Thor are as different as night and day. Thor is meant to be a powerful, dominant 5/5 Creature that can win the game for you on the spot.

Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu on the other hand is a Green Human Warrior Hero for 1g that allows you to activate your Creature abilities the turn they enter the battlefield.

This includes Shang-Chi himself, who can tap to add two mana of any color to help activate Creature abilities.

It remains to be seen what will be combined with Shang-Chi in Standard, but even allowing Llanowar Elves to tap for mana the turn it enters can be a powerful effect. The jury is still out on this one but given how powerful Mono-Green Landfall is right now, it wouldn't surprise me to see this one break out.

Ultron, Artificial Malevolence

The fourth and final card in this $10 tier is Ultron, Artificial Malevolence.

Ultron, Artificial Malevolence Regular Art

Ultron is a 2/4 Robot Villain Artifact Creature for three. He comes with a powerful triggered ability, too.

Whenever a nontoken Artifact you control enters, you can pay two mana to create a token copy that is also a 2/2 Robot Villain in addition to its other types. There aren't any tier one Artifact decks in Standard currently, so it'll be interesting to see if Ultron, Artificial Malevolence finds a home.

Currently its ability is powerful enough to drive preorder pricing to $10, but this could fade if demand is driven strictly by Commander.

The Most Valuable non-Mythic Rare

A number of mythic rares are a half-step cheaper. Cosmic Cube, King T'Challa, Tony Stark, and The Ten Rings are all preselling in the high-single digits. The moral of this story is that if you're looking to turn a profit on your sealed pool or booster draft, you want to open mythic rares.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

If you miss on the mythics, then there is really only one regular rare worth opening, aptly named The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Regular Art

A contender for cutest card in the set, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a Squirrel Human Hero for 1ggg with the most adorable abilities (if you're a squirrel fan).

Her first ability is named "Do You Like Squirrels?" When she enters or attacks, you create a 1/1 Squirrel token. Then her second ability, named "I LOVE Squirrels!" creates X 1/1 Squirrel tokens for 1ggg, where X is the number of Squirrels you control.

Thus, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a $10 Squirrel-army-in-a-can. I don't suspect she'll break into Standard, but she is likely to be a popular Commander card.

There's a strong enough Squirrel following in the Magic community to drive demand for this card, hence its current preorder price tag. She may not hold in double digits, but she's definitely a fun and noteworthy rare to open from a Marvel Super Heroes booster pack.

Honorable Mentions

As is the norm nowadays, Marvel Super Heroes also contains various alternative arts and styles for various cards, often with a much higher price tag relative to their base printing. These cards are usually findable in Collector Boosters, which carry a significant price premium.

In the case of MSH, the most desirable alternative printing comes in the form of borderless, comic book-looking cards. The most noteworthy examples are currently selling for north of $100.

Valuable MSH Cards

As pictured, most valuable card of them all isn't a comic book art. Instead, it's the borderless variant of The Mind Stone, which currently sells for well over $1,000.

The Mind Stone Borderless Thanos

But even this card isn't technically the most expensive you can find in the set. That privilege is reserved for the textless version of the card, a version so rare that none are currently available for sale on the open market.

The Mind Stone Textless Infinity Stone

Opening this card will likely fund your next international vacation as well as a new car. It's impossible to estimate its value since there have been no public transactions completed to-date, but a similar card, Marvel's Spider-Man textless The Soul Stone, is currently listed with a $175,000 price tag.

Granted the card hasn't sold at this price, but it gives you a reference point.

Wrapping It Up

Unlike some other sets, Marvel Super Heroes' value is truly concentrated in a handful of mythic rare cards. If you're hoping to open some value from your Play Boosters, you really need to pull The Mind Stone.

Otherwise, you're likely to be left with a pile of low-value cardboard.

If you're truly on the hunt for the unobtanium that Magic collectors drool over, then you'd better purchase Collector Booster packs instead. That's where the high-dollar, alternative art cards can be found.

It goes to show you that Wizards of the Coast is really embracing this model for their sets nowadays -- regular versions of cards are inexpensive, keeping barrier to entry for Standard players relatively low.

Then they print ultrarare variants with high-dollar price tags to keep collectors coming back for more.
