Hello happy folks! If you enjoy one of a kitchen table player's favorite creature types - Dragons - this list is sure to get you excited! Whether you are an old veteran or a new to the party thanks to all of the great stuff from Tarkir: Dragonstorm, let's take a look at some of my favorite support cards for Dragons for Commander and multiplayer!
Honorable Mention
Broodcaller Scourge
Broodcaller Scourge turns combat damage of your Dragons into a free permanent from your hand with cost equal to or less than the total damage dealt. Free stuff from your hand is great! Note the ability is written in such a way that something like doublestrike would let you get two triggers since it's two instances of combat damage!
Crux of Fate
Yay for sweepers! In a Dragon deck this will sweep all non-Dragons at the table, and thus save your team from sweepage, barring weird non-Dragon support stuff. It costs five mana, which is only one more than the typical Wrath of God or Damnation.
Lathliss, Dragon Queen AND Utvara Hellkite
This Red duo is great for Dragons to go wide and they work amazingly together. Lathliss gives you a 5/5 dragon token with flying whenever a nontoken Dragon enters under your control. And she lets you pump the team! Utvara Hellkite takes things further by giving you a 6/6 flying dragon token whenever one of your dragons attacks, including your dragon tokens!
Tiamat
Tiamat has a cast and enters trigger that lets you tutor up any of five different named Dragons from your deck to your hand!
Dragonstorm
This tutors out a Dragon to the battlefield once for each storm count! The bigger your count, the better this is! Just a couple dragons can win the game fast, and this is like Tooth and Nail entwined for Dragons!
Whirlwing Stormbrood
Since Dragons and Dragon support cards tend to be sorcery speed, casting them with flash is brilliant. The first time someone goes to attack over your team with flying or with your creatures tapped, and you cast a fat Dragon and block and kill their attacker? They won't make that mistake twice. Flash creatures out at the end of their turn, untap, and swing with creatures people didn't think they'd have to block! This 5-drop flash, flying 4/3 will let you flash them out, and sorceries too!
#5. Atarka, World Render
This 6/4 flying and trampling, ouch, legendary beater in Gruul is next! She costs seven and then when any Dragon swings? It gets that sweet double strike! Works great with Broodcaller Scourge or any go-wide or tall Dragon brews.
#4. Scourge of Valkas
This five-drop is hard to cast with the in its cost, but it gets you a flying 4/4 body with some sweet abilities! All of your Dragons, including itself, trigger an enters ability when Scourge is in play to shoot any target for damage equal to the number of Dragons you control! Early on you can use that to kill utility creaturess and planeswalkers and then later it can outright take players out of the game. It's a game winner!
#3. Ureni of the Unwritten
This seven-drop on-curve 7/7 flyer with trample is my highest hitting legendary creature, but it's here more for its role as a support card. When Ureni enters or swings, you can dig eight and then drop a free Dragon from among them onto the battlefield! We all know how nasty good free stuff can be!
#2. Dracogenesis
We have left behind actual Dragons for a pair of enchantments in the top spots. This eight-drop mono-Red mythic can let you drop all of your Dragons for free! Combined with Whirlwing Stormbrood? Nasty! Ureni only drops one dragon when it enters or swings, basically once per turn, but this? Instant game-winning will ensue! Then play a Wheel of Fortune effect and keep up the pressure!
#1. Call the Spirit Dragons
This five-color 5-drop will give your Dragon team indestructible, which is really rough to answer. Then in your upkeep you can toss a +1/+1 counter on a Dragon you control of each a color, and if that's five different dragons? You win the game, literally not figuratively. Just run [card]Tiamat" href="/p/Magic+The+Gathering/Tiamat" href="/p/Magic+The+Gathering/[card]Tiamat">[card]Tiamat">Tiamat" href="/p/Magic+The+Gathering/[card]Tiamat">[card]Tiamat or cast Conflux and drop them immediately with #2 and win!
There we go! What are your favorite cards to support Dragon brews? Let me know your thoughts below! Have an amazingly great day and an enjoyable week too!
