Ever since Fastbond was printed in Alpha, people have adored breaking the one land per turn limit, and nothing exemplifies that more than the classic Exploration. Today we are looking at my Exploration effect! But before we do, I've been doing a deep dive into Ramp and all things Mana with my top Mana Dorks, my Top Land Accelerators like Solemn Simulacrum here, and the many ways to Ramp in general.
Let's get started here!
Honorable Mentions
Explore Spells - There have been a few spells that are one-time effects that draw a card and let you drop an extra land. I often add Urban Evolution to draw three and play an extra land. That's just one more mana than Harmonize!
Loot, Exuberant Explorer - This 3-drop 1/4 has the Explore text and taps for six to dig six cards and drop a creature with mana value less than or equal to your land count! That's a pretty spicy updside.
Exploration - The classic version of this effect and the namesake of this article! You can drop it turn one and it just keeps providing value over the long term! You gotta love it!
Mina and Denn, Wildborn - This 4-drop 4/4 Elf pair is great! You can Explore and then spend two mana and return a land you control to your hand at any time to give your dork Trample in case it's chumped, which is great for getting more landfall triggers.
Case of the Locked Hothouse - Our top scoring enchantment and Honorable Mention is this four-drop Case! It starts out as just an Exploration, then when you have seven lands out you can solved it. Once it's solved, you can play lands and cast creatures and enchantments from the top of your library!
Top 5 Time!
5. Azusa, Lost but Seeking
This 3-drop legendary was the first Exploration on a Creature and she lets you drop two additional lands! Her size is small and limited functionality do keep her off the top end of this list but being able to put out two additional lands a turn is a powerful effect if you can keep it going.
4. Oracle of Mul Daya
Oracle of Mul Daya gives you that Exploration effect on a creature, but it also creates card advantage by letting you play lands off the top of your library's. Sure, your opponents will all know what's coming off the top, but it's worth it!
3. Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait
Aesi is our highest costed card on this list and the highest hitting gold card. It has a landfall trigger to draw a card and it has the Exploration text, which is a great combo!
2. Dryad of the Ilysian Grove
This three-drop 2/4 enchantment dork let's you drop an extra land and then all of your lands are all basic land types. He's a Chromatic Lantern plus Exploration!
1. Icetill Explorer
This recently printed four-drop 2/4 combines the beloved Exploration with a Crucible of Worlds for one additional mana! Then it's even got landfall to mill and fill it up!
There we go! There are bunches of these effects! Many of them have downsides like Flubs, the Fool or The Gitrog Monster or even Song of Creation - but if you build around them they could be great adjuncts or leaders for your next brew. Would you consider Fastbond? I hope you enjoyed this list!
