Updates to Hall of Fame Eligibility

Reddit

With Hall of Fame ballots coming out at the end of the month Mike Rosenberg announced changes to the eligibility requirements today.

According to the article, in order to be eligible a player must have at least 150 Pro Points and (new for this year) must have made at least two final-day appearances. Final-day finishes include an individual Pro Tour Top 8, a Team Pro Tour Top 4, or a Top 4 in a World Championship. The World Championship final day must have occurred since the new format began in 2012. Editor's note: a previous version of this article indicated that only final-day appearances after 2012 would be counted. This is not correct and the 2012 caveat only applies to Top 4 finishes at the World Championship.

Also new this year, a player will be removed from the ballot if they receive less than 10% of the unweighted vote. A player can reappear on the ballot if the earn 4 Professional Points "during the set period a year's selection ballot looks at."

Finally, in order to be voted into the Hall of Fame, a player will need to appear on at least 60% of the unweighted ballots, up from 40%. Here is an explanation from Rosenberg:

In the last few years, we've seen a growing number of selection committee participants using fewer than the maximum of five votes that they are allowed to cast. While selection committee members will continue to be allowed to use up to five votes, it was clear that the reason for many not using all their votes was due to what was a relatively low threshold of votes needed to induct a player into the Pro Tour Hall of Fame. Casting fewer votes was done as a means to make the Hall of Fame more exclusive, and we saw this more and more with increasing frequency each year because the system was not at a place to support those ideals.

We will know more about how these changes influence the ballot when it is released at the end of the month.
