Strixhaven Standard Set Review: Green, Witherbloom, and Colorless

Reddit

Today we wrap up everything with Witherbloom, the Green cards, and the artifact and colorless cards. This is the last day of class, so make sure you study up on the entire set review. Before we get started on Witherbloom, let us go over my grading scale one last time.

I will not be going over cards that I believe will not see play in Standard and I will not be going over the Commander cards that will not see Standard play. For example, cards like Goldmaw Champion and Master Skald will be omitted since they are just Limited cards and saying, "This is just a Limited card" repeatedly gets old rather fast. Do not worry though, I will be covering all the rare and mythic cards in the actual Strixhaven set. So, if you like a certain rare or mythic, it will be mentioned in the review.

Keep in mind I am rating all these cards for Standard playability. I will mention Modern applications if I believe the card has some.

Each card will be listed by color, then alphabetically by name.

Each card will be given a rating of 1-5. If a card would receive a 0, meaning it will see no play in that format ever, its rating is left off the list.

Rating | Explanation | Standard Examples

0 - Will never see play in this format (0 ratings are not listed).

1 - Unlikely to see play. (Divine Gambit)

2 - Could see fringe play, or occasional sideboard card. (Disdainful Stroke, Annul, Erebos's Intervention, Shadow's Verdict)

3 - Commonly played, staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Righteous Valkyrie, Behold the Multiverse, Solemn Simulacrum)

4 - Format staples. Sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (Saw it Coming, Fabled Passage, Bonecrusher Giant)

5 - Format warping. If you are in these colors, you play that card or keep that card in mind when building decks. (Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, Embercleave, The Great Henge)

Now that we have that out of the way, let's begin!

Green

Accomplished Alchemist
Accomplished Alchemist - 1.5 - Way too slow for a ramp creature, another cool one for Commander though.
Basic Conjuration
Basic Conjuration - 2 - A solid Lesson for Learn in your Sideboard, seems like a decent one to fetch up with Gnarled Professor.
Containment Breach
Containment Breach - 1.5 - Depending on the metagame this could see play. It really depends on how many artifacts or enchantments it can hit. Right now, odds are that it is not good enough.
Dragonsguard Elite
Dragonsguard Elite - 3 - Super Prowess! If Dragonsguard is left unchecked for too long, it will become a massive threat and very quick.
Ecological Appreciation
Ecological Appreciation - 2.5 - A fixed Tooth and Nail? I do not like that your opponent gets to pick the creature but still a neat card to build around.
Emergent Sequence
Emergent Sequence - 2.5 - A mana creature that can sometimes be a 2/2 or 3/3. It is fine but not much different than your 2 mana value ramp creature.
Exponential Growth
Exponential Growth - 2 - Too expensive for Standard but an absolute bomb of a card in Commander!
Gnarled Professor
Gnarled Professor - 3.5 - A solid creature for the mana cost that allows you to Learn. I am a fan of this one and expect it to see some play while Eldraine is around but moreso when Eldraine rotates.
Tangletrap
Tangletrap - 2 - Versatile Sideboard card. A plummet that can also destroy artifacts.
Verdant Mastery
Verdant Mastery - 1.5 - Just play Migration Path if you want to ramp. I am a huge lover of ramp spells but this one is a no go for Standard but another fun one for Commander.

Witherbloom

Beledros Witherbloom
Beledros Witherbloom - 2.5 - A fun one for Commander for sure. As far as Standard it could be used as a combo piece if you can gain enough life, maybe in Historic with Weather the Storm you could build a sweet Storm deck.
Culling Ritual
Culling Ritual - 3 - Excellent Sideboard card against Lurrus decks, destroy all those creatures and annoying ovens!
Daemogoth Titan
Daemogoth Titan - 3 - Could see play in a Pest deck, also a great card to Fling at your opponent for over 50% of their starting life total.
Daemogoth Woe-Eater
Daemogoth Woe-Eater - 3 - Very similar to the Titan but if you are not Flinging your creatures or Sacrificing them to Tend the Pests then you will want to consider Daemogoth Woe-Eater over the Titan.
Deadly Brew
Deadly Brew - 4 - Wow, what a removal spell. This card is going to be one of the best cards in your Witherbloom Sacrifice deck.
Dina, Soul Steeper
Dina, Soul Steeper - 3.5 - Works with Exquisite Blood and alongside the new Pest tokens making it drain your opponents whenever sacrificing a Pest.
Harness Infinity
Harness Infinity - 2 - Fun but for this amount of mana you can be winning the game on the spot with Emergent Ultimatum. You cannot just ramp into Harness Infinity and cast it, like you can with Emergent Ultimatum. You need to fuel your graveyard and then cast it later in the game in order to get other cards to win you the game... Too slow.
Pest Summoning
Pest Summoning - 2 - A very pesty lesson that I would love in my sacrifice deck.
Rushed Rebirth
Rushed Rebirth - 2 - A retroactive Neoform? If you are triggering this yourself it can be an odd Neoform. Too much work though for not much of payoff in Standard.
Tend the Pests
Tend the Pests - 3 - Really like this with the Daemogoth Titan or even just Lovestruck Beast. Seems like an amazing way to get a ton of tokens quick.
Witherbloom Command
Witherbloom Command - 2 - Witherbloom Command could shine in older formats but the sorcery speed and some of the modes just do not cut it for Standard. Really needed a -2/-2 or to be instant.

Colorless/Artifacts

Environmental Sciences
Environmental Sciences - 3 - I think almost every deck that Learn can want this card to ensure they hit their land drops, I know I will.
Introduction to Annihilation
Introduction to Annihilation - 2.5 - The cost and drawback is steep but sometimes you got to do what you got to do, your opponent is going to draw ten cards of The Great Henge anyway so might as well get rid of it.
Introduction to Prophecy
Introduction to Prophecy - 2 - Eh, if this is what you are getting with your Learn spells in Constructed you are not thinking big enough. Only home I can see this for a is a deck that has a lot of Magecraft and it really wants to cycle through its deck.
Mascot Exhibition
Mascot Exhibition - 3 - The best Lesson and one every deck with Learn should have access to. It's just a great Lesson late game. Great to grab with Gnarled Professor, especially since Green decks are usually ramping one way or another!

Top 5 Witherbloom / Colorless Cards

  1. Deadly Brew
  2. Gnarled Professor
  3. Tend the Pests
  4. Dragonsguard Elite
  5. Mascot Exhibition

Witherbloom definitely has a bright future ahead of it with sacrifice decks. I expect all sacrifice decks to be running a lot of cards as Witherbloom does the tokens and sacrifice thing so well. I love Deadly Brew and how much value it can generate; it is a grindy card and those cards are fun to play a long game with! Thanks for reading students, you have all graduated!
