Throne of Eldraine Standard Set Review: Green and Lands

Reddit

We wrap things up today with my favorite color in Magic, Green! We will also be going over the sweet lands from Throne of Eldraine.

I will not be going over cards that I believe will not see play in Standard and I will not be going over the Commander cards that will not see Standard play. For example, cards like Silverwing Squadron (Brawl rare) and Lonesome Unicorn will be omitted since they are just Limited/Commander cards and saying, "This is just a Limited card" repeatedly gets old rather fast. Don't worry though, I will be covering all the rare and mythic cards in the actual Throne of Eldraine set. So, if you like a certain rare or mythic, it will be mentioned in the review.

Keep in mind I'm rating all these cards for Standard playability. I will mention Modern applications if I believe the card has some.

Each card will be listed by color, then alphabetically by name.

Each card will be given a rating of 1-5. If a card would receive a 0, meaning it will see no play in that format ever, its rating is left off the list.

Rating | Explanation | Standard Examples

0 - Will never see play in this format (0 ratings are not listed).

1 - Unlikely to see play. (Light of the Legion)

2 - Could see fringe play, or occasional sideboard card. (Drowned Secrets)

3 - Commonly played, staple in a single deck, or frequent play in several decks. (Oath of Kaya, Thought Erasure, Lava Coil)

4 - Format staples. Sees play in multiple decks, one of the best cards in the format. (Hydroid Krasis, Risen Reef, Field of the Dead, Nissa, Who Shakes the World)

5 - Format warping. If you're in these colors, you play that card. (Teferi, Time Raveler, Narset, Parter of Veils)

Let's see what the Green and Land cards have to offer!

Beanstalk Giant
3 - This will see play but it's no Elvish Rejuvenator and it requires you to play a good amount of basic lands. Getting a big giant later is fine but it's nothing too exciting. I just want Farseek!
Feasting Troll King
3 - This is a big troll boy that is dang resilient to death. I expect food decks or even just reanimator decks to play this hungry troll king.
Fell the Pheasant
2 - Sideboard card that kills fliers and gains you life at the very least. Good enough for me.
Giant Opportunity
2.5 - A 3 mana 7/7 is pretty good but dying to Teferi and your opponent drawing a card... Is not. I like that it generates Food tokens instead if you're playing against a Teferi deck. Fuel the Feasting Troll King instead.
Gilded Goose
4 - This card is very good and will see play in multiple decks as long as it's legal in Standard. Especially with the rotation of Llanowar Elves.
Kenrith's Transformation
2 - A decent removal spell for Green decks. I can see this being played in the Sideboard.
Lovestruck Beast
2.5 - I think Lovestruck Beast is fine but ultimately just a worse Rotting Regisaur or Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig.
Oakhame Adversary
2 - Solid Green mirror match hate card. Either trades with a bigger creature or draws you cards.
Once and Future
2 - If you're not playing Blue (no Tamiyo) then you might want to consider this. I do see this having some combo potential in a Temur Thousand-Year Storm deck.
Once Upon a Time
3.5 - This card is better for older formats but it's completely fine in Standard. I like it for Field decks so you can find that Field of the Dead or Golos, Tireless Pilgrim.
Questing Beast
3 - This card is fine, but it's overrated it. It'll see play in some Green midrange decks but it's not going to warp the format by any means. Being legendary does hurt the card quite a bit and it competes with Shifting Ceratops for the Sideboard. Again, it's fine, but not as good as everyone thinks.
Steelbane Hydra
2 - Solid sideboard card when you wanna blow up all the artifacts and enchantments!
The Great Henge
2 - I LOVE the ability to add two-mana and gaining two life in the process but to get this thing in play is hard and when it's not hard it's because you've played a Rotting Regisaur... These cards don't really go together that well. Maybe alongside the Troll King? The best place for this is a ramp deck but it's so hard to get into play not to mention it can just be bounced by Teferi after a Kaya's Wrath.
Thorn Mammoth
2 - This card is a midrange breaker. I could see decks that run Risen Reef play the Mammoth, I just don't think it's better than Voracious Hydra.
Wicked Wolf
3 - This card is good, with or without Food. Will be great against the Knight decks or other small creature decks.
Wildborn Preserver
3 - Simic Flash is just getting better and better. I expect to see this Elf flash in at my end step a lot...
Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig
3 - THE KANG IS HERE! Mono Green stompy king has got your back. This should only see play in Green / x stompy decks, hopefully alongside Vivien, Arbow Ranger to give him Trample otherwise he'll just be chumped blocked a lot or by zombies.

Top 5 Green Cards

  1. Gilded Goose
  2. Once Upon a Time
  3. Questing Beast
  4. Beanstalk Giant
  5. Wildborn Preserver

Last but not least, lands!

Castle Garenbrig
3-3.5 - These are all very playable as they don't take much to include in your deck and come into play untapped often. They should all see a ton of play.
Mystic Sanctuary
2.5-3 - These are a little narrower but the green and red ones will easily see play. Like the castles, comeTheros / devotion they will all see play too.
Tournament Grounds
3 - Great in Knight decks, is it enough to play 3 color knights? It's risky, I feel like the deck wants another rainbow land. Maybe alongside Fabled Passage?
Fabled Passage
3.5 - Evolving Wilds has seen play in the past and this is just a better Evolving Wilds. Great for ramp decks!

Green got a format staple that'll be in a ton of Green decks in Gilded Goose along with a handful of other less powerful but staple cards. The lands are excellent, and I love the tension between playing a mono-colored / two-colored deck or a multicolored deck. I like that you get rewarded for playing less colors, but you do have the option to play more colors thanks to Ravnica and Fabled Passage.

That's it for my set review, Throne of Eldraine seems like a fantastic set just like M20 with amazing cards but nothing oppressive like Teferi / Narset. I'm excited to start brewing!

As always, thanks for reading,
