Yu-Gi-Oh! is a fast-paced game with an ever evolving meta. Players are always looking to hone their decks to compete at the highest level. New cards are released frequently and cards come on and off the ban list. It's a lot to keep up with if you're gunning for the top.
Right now, we've entered the Blazing Dominion format. We're also hot off the heels of the most recent update to the Forbidden and Limited List, effective May 18th. Together, these changes have spiced up the competitive scene.
Looking at the current meta shows several cards being used at the highest echelons of play. If you want a leg up on the competition, you'll want to consider these for your own deck or at least be aware of what your opponent may play.
Best Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards of the Format
The most recent Forbidden and Limited list lowered the power of Justice Hunters decks in favor of the newest deck-building set Phantom Revenge. At the moment, Kewl Tune has proven to be the top contender among them and much of the meta will develop with the top deck in mind.
Other decks to receive new tools or direct support include Artmage, Branded, Elfnote, Mitsurugi, Odion, Sky Striker, and more. Meanwhile, decks like K9, Maliss, and Yummy will need more creative deck-builds to stay afloat. Here are some of the best cards being used by the meta.
- Forbidden Crown
- The Fallen & the Virtuous
- Super Polymerization
- Zalen the Shackled Dragon
- Dominus Spark
- Fydraulis Harmonia
- Mulcharmy Fuwalos
- Fallen of the White Dragon
- DoomZ XII Zero - Drastea
- Kewl Tune Rotary
10. Forbidden Crown
The Forbidden Spell cards have had a long history of competitive usage and Forbidden Crown continues that trend. It's a Quick-Play Spell, so you can use it preemptively or reactively. You apply six continuous effects to a face-up monster on the field for the turn that basically turns it into a rock, unable to attack, be destroyed, or activate effects.
It's usually more advantageous to use it on your opponent's monster to lock it down for the turn. You can use it to shut down a key combo piece, but anything your opponent normal summons is usually a safe bet.
The alternative to Forbidden Crown is the more accessible and still widely popular Forbidden Droplet. You can also go with the other end of the lore with the new Solemn Accusation Trap card. Either way, you have some of the best cards to shut down your opponent's plays at your disposal.
9. The Fallen & The Virtuous
When it comes to impactful cards in the middle of a Duel, The Fallen & the Virtuous is at the top of its class. Nontargeting destruction is the preferred method of monster removal since it keeps your opponent on their toes and plays around targeting protection effects. It's handy for keeping decks like Maliss and Kewl Tune off bodies on the field to use for their combos.
We can't forget the additional value gained from sending a card like Albion the Shrouded Dragon from the Extra Deck as cost. Its End Phase effect can set you up with another TF&TV to help you on the next turn. Overall, it's a card you love to see in your opening hand.
8. Super Polymerization
Super Polymerization has been one of the strongest board breaking cards in the game this format. It takes 2 or more of your opponent's monsters and turns them into one of yours while they're unable to respond, and that cannot be underestimated. The prospect of clearing your opponent's field becomes even easier now that there are more targets to fuse into in the Extra Deck.
Besides mainstays like Garura, Wings of Resonant Life and Mudragon of the Swamp, format specific Super Poly targets have emerged. Sea Monster of Theseus is made with two Tuners as material to break a Kewl Tune player's board. The Dragon that Devours the Dogma or Secreterion Dragon can be made to disrupt Branded or Dracotail end boards. The Duke of Demise can be made to counter Fiendsmith. There are plenty of possibilities and almost no one's board is safe.
7. Zalen the Shackled Dragon
Burst Protocol saw the release of Zalen the Shackled Dragon, which buffed a lot of the Synchro decks being used in today's format. Kewl Tune, Yummy, and Red Dragon Archfiend can all take advantage of its powerful effect. As an Extra Deck staple, it's one of the best in the meta.
Zalen lets you negate an effect but can actually negate an effect that happened earlier in the Chain. It breaks the mold of traditional negates and players' use of Chain Blocking. Players will need to be extra careful when trying to play around this powerful Dragon.
6. Dominus Spark
Another powerful card to come out of Blazing Dominion is the Trap Card Domimus Spark. The Dominus cards have been a series of trap cards with game changingly powerful effects. They can be activated from the hand if a condition is met, but in doing so they restrict the player's usage of certain attributes for the rest of the Duel.
Dominus Spark lets the player target a monster their opponent controls and banishes it. Then the opponent can Special Summon a monster from their hand. A very nice tradeoff for the player using Spark and one that will certainly catch the opponent off guard.
Since you're locked into only using Light and Dark monster effects for the rest of the duel after using it as a hand trap, decks like Mitsurugi have been able to easily slot it in. It's a nice buff to an already strong deck in the format even after Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi was limited to one copy on the Forbidden and Limited List.
5. Fydraulis Harmonia
One of the best cards to come out of Blazing Dominion, Fydraulis Harmonia combines the power of a hand trap, playmaker, and general attack beat stick all into one card. This new Secret Rare Tuner Dragon is best played in decks utilizing at least five Synchro monsters in the Extra Deck in order to get maximum value out of its effect. Revealing itself when your opponent's monster activates an effect triggers a landslide on bonuses on which you can capitalize.
Besides the obvious advantages of special summoning a level seven Dragon tuner with 2500 ATK, the real playmaking factor comes in with sending a Synchro Monster from your Extra Deck to the Graveyard. For example, you can send Enigmaster Packbit to send a monster to your opponent's back row or return something to the hand with Golden Cloud Beast - Malong. Harmonia can even be searched for by Bystial Magnamhut. It's a frighteningly strong card.
4. Mulcharmy Fuwalos
Mulcharmy Fuwalos remains the best handtrap to have in the Main Deck for this format. Most decks still want to do a fair bit of summoning from the deck and Extra Deck, and getting additional draws off of those summons can make or break your turn.
The other Mulcharmies like Mulcharmy Purulia and Mulcharmy Meowls are strong against certain decks, but Fuwalos works almost across the board.
Fuwalos also baits your opponent's Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, giving them one less tool to use again your key searches. Ash Blossom remains a top Hand Trap as well, if even just to stop cards like the Mulcharmies or strong combo starters.
3. Fallen of the White Dragon
Fallen of the White Dragon and Ecclesia and the Dark Dragon are two high quality cards from Burst Protocol that revitalized the Branded strategy. Branded has always been one of the best Fusion strategies but suffered from being a bit too fair in the past. Now, with the new cards that provide multiple pushes, interruption, and ways to keep playing the game, we're seeing it shine once again.
Fallen of the White Dragon can Special summon itself along with an Ecclesia monster from your hand, deck, or Graveyard. It lets you easily set up for a level eight Synchro summon while sending a monster (usually Fusion) to the GY for a nice bonus effect during the End Phase.
This can lead to you setting The Fallen & the Virtuous during your end phase, so it usually demands your opponent's attention unless they want the Duel to quickly spiral out of their control. Having a small package of these 5-6 Branded cards is effective for some other decks to use as well so the cards are splashable too.
2. DoomZ XII Zero - Drastea
DoomZ is another archetype that was equipped with more support to finally push it into meta relevancy after Blazing Dominion. Along with the new Power Patron support, this deck is capable of some incredible pushes and XYZ mayhem. DoomZ XII Zero - Drastea is still the main playmaker of the deck, capable of fetching an equip card from your deck and turning into DoomZ XII End - Drastrius at a moment's notice.
Your other new starter is Jupredo the Shademachine Power Patron. With its effect you can easily cheat out Jupiter the Power Patron of Destruction from your Extra Deck. Don't forget, Medius the Pure can add to your hand or summon out any of your Power Patron as an additional way to pivot into an XYZ play.
1. Kewl Tune Rotary
An archetype that once stood in the shadows of the Justice Hunters decks, Kewl Tune has now reached the peak of the meta. Coming off the heels of YCS Columbus, Kewl Tune was the most represented deck among the top 32 players. The support it received in Blazing Dominion helped elevate it to the top tables where it previously struggled.
It turns out having a deck that runs exclusively tuners and doesn't need non-tuners to Synchro summon is pretty good. Kewl Tune leverages all the advantages of traditional Tuner Hand Traps against their opponent. They also have ways to manipulate the opponent's hand, deck, and Extra Deck with cards like Kewl Tune Cue and Kewl Tune Rotary. It's truly an invasively strong archetype.
Conclusion
As the meta develops and shifts, so too do the best cards. A lot of the decks that are successful right now are ones that have multiple pushes and can keep playing through disruption. On the other hand, board breakers are more powerful than ever and run you less of a risk of losing than if you opted to play Hand Traps, unlike in past formats.
Some decks are right on the cusp of being meta relevant and just need one or two more waves of support to get there. Others might be past their expiration dates. Nevertheless, the meta changes quickly and is ever evolving. As more cards are thrown into the mix, it's an exciting time to play Yu-Gi-Oh!
