Wizards Announces Fourth Pro Tour

Reddit

In an interview on Pro Tour Gatecrash coverage, Hélène Bergeot announced the return of a fourth Pro Tour to the professional Magic season. Starting in the Summer of the 2014 season, there will be a fourth Pro Tour following the release of the Core Set in the summer. Additionally, there will be a fourth PTQ season associated with the four Pro Tour, bringing the annual number of PTQs up to about 800.

There will will also be changes to the format of the Pro Tour and the Pro Players Club. The first of these changes is that the constructed format of the Pro Tour friends in Dublin will be changed to Standard and there will be a second Pro Tour featuring Standard as the constructed format each year.

With the addition of a Pro Tour, there will be a significant increase in the number of Pro Points available each year. Consequently, the thresholds for the Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels of the Pro Player Club are being revisited, and we can expect a formal announcement regarding the new thresholds in April.

While the official information will be posted soon, here's the announcement as it happened live at Pro Tour Gatecrash:

Summary of Changes:

  • Fourth Pro Tour featuring the Core Set starting Summer 2014.
  • The target size of the Pro Tour is 350 players.
  • The format for Pro Tour Friends has been changed to Standard.
  • Standard will be featured at two Pro Tours annually, starting with Pro Tour Friends in Dublin.
  • There will be an additional Pro Tour Qualifier season feeding into the fourth Pro Tour (about 800 PTQs annually).
  • The thresholds for the Pro Player Club are being revisited, expect an official announcement in April.
