As I am sure you've seen by now I'm not ranking or rating cards for this set. Instead, I am just talking about the cards that gave me a reason to pause and think. Unfortunately, Steel didn't give me much to consider. There are multiple cards that can be cohesive members of the right deck but not much in the WOW type of cards here.
Even though it's not played much this way Steel has numbers that would lend to an Aggro strategy. While Vinnie only quests for one he can serve as board wipe protection. It's not hard to see a scenario where you have 5 characters with 16 lore and your opponent may have Be Prepared ready for the next turn. Here, you can play Vinnie and laugh. Be Prep? You win. Don't Be Prep? You win.
First of all, SO Many character types. Seems to fit in any tribal except Princess. But seriously, 2 Lore for 2 Ink with 3 / 3 body is impressive stats. You are rarely going to play him on turn two but we are in Steel. So many easy ways to do early cheap damage makes this guy playable and adds to the aggro Steel list.
Five ink may be a bit high on the curve for this card but the extra draw/ discard every turn is very beneficial for combo decks. Add to that the 2 lore that no one wants to challenge because of the power it'll probably have. For sure, it's a lightning rod, making your opponent reach for removal before it gets too big to handle.
Free Lore and card draw for doing the job it was meant to do? Okay, sure. While coming in at 4 inkable instead of 2 uninkable This Stitch will play very Similar to Calhoun - Marine Sergeant. (Maybe even better). And we will have both together for at least one rotation!
This action is such a combo enabler. And I love combo synergy. At 3 uninkable you'll rarely use it for the card draw/empty hand but it's good value there as well if you're dumping your hand on the table fast enough.
Does anyone remember the Fragile little Mickey Mouse - Trumpeter. I think he just found another target. At 10 uninkable he has to be tricked into play. But at 5 lore he also could be friends with The Queen - Disguised Peddler. With a 10 / 10 body he is quite a bodyguard. The Return of Hercules could also be used since your opponents free play is nothing to worry about. Even Mal's dragon form would let Mickey wipe out their entire board.
This card feels like the Rotational replacement for A Whole New World. It costs a bit more but can be sung together. While not as powerful because of the reset value being 3 cards instead of 7 it does have the benefit of choosing the players. So, if you have 1 card in hand and your opponent has 6 choose both, if you have 6 in hand and your opponent has 7 choose just them. If it isn't yielding card advantage don't play it yet.
Well, that's my take on Steel. As usual, if the card is cool enough to ink you can find it at coolstuffinc.com.
