As of early July 2025, Star Wars Unlimited introduced its fifth set to the trading card game: Legends of the Force. This set highlights characters such as Darth Vader, Mother Talzin, Obi-Wan Kenobi and many other iconic force wielders. In this article, I will be going over the heroic leaders of Legends of the Force. in contrast to our last article where we reviewed the villainous leaders.
Vigilant Heroic Leaders
Ahsoka Tano - Fighting for Peace
Ahsoka Tano's Leader ability is "Action; Exhaust this leader; Use the Force: Give a friendly unit Sentinel for the phase." She can flip to her leader unit side after achieving six or more resources. Ahsoka's leader unit is a 5 power 6 health leader unit with "On Attack: You may give a friendly unit Sentinel for the phase." This Ahsoka Tano leader is a lot like General Grievous from Twilight of the Republic who you could exhaust to give a droid unit Sentinel.
The main difference is that General Grievous did not require you to use the force to give a unit Sentinel. Comparisons aside, Ahsoka promotes a way for you to protect your base from incoming attacks, but that also comes at the cost of ensuring your chosen unit that has been granted Sentinel takes damage instead of your base. Even so, what support is Legends of the Force granting us to play with this leader?
Oggdo Bogdo - Bogano Brute, Tuk'ata, Qui-Gon Jinn - The Negotiations Will Be Short, and Hyperspace Wayfarer are all excellent choices with a hearty amount of health on them to ram into, or combat tricks to force your opponents to play into.
Kanan Jarrus - Help Us Survive
Kanan Jarrus's leader side has the ability "Action; Exhaust one [1] resource; Exhaust this leader: Give a Shield token to a creature or spectre unit." and can flip to his leader unit side after achieving 6 or more resources. On Kanan Jarrus's leader unit side he is a 3 power and 6 health leader unit with the keyword Shielded and has the static ability "While you control another creature or spectre unit, this unit gets +2/+2". It's rather flavorful seeing Kanan provide protection for other creatures on the leader side while also getting stronger working alongside specified unit traits. We've seen a ton of Spectre's in the past sets, even previously Spectre Leaders like Hera Syndulla from Sparks of Rebellion.
Let's take a look at some of the creatures and spectres coming out of Legends of the Force to support our surviving Jedi, Kanan Jarrus. Loth-Wolf, Ezra Bridger - Attuned with Life, Dume - Redeem the Future and Charging Phillak are all excellent creature selections for Kana Jarrus to utilize in your 50-card deck.
Command Heroic Leaders
Obi-Wan Kenobi - Courage Makes Heroes
Obi-Wan Kenobi can flip to his leader unit side after achieving 5 or more resources and has the leader ability "Action; exhaust this leader; use the force: Give an Experience token to a unit without an Experience token on it." Obi-Wan is highly reliant on utilizing the Force mechanic. This ability feels like we need to go wide with units in order to fully benefit by placing Experience tokens on units. That reminds me a lot of Magic: The Gathering's Selesnya Playstyle from Return to Ravnica, where Selesnya would go wide with the populate mechanic in the form of tokens.
Regardless, Obi-wan's Leader Unit is a 3 power and 6 health unit with the ability "On Attack: You may give an experience token to another unit without an experience token on it." So, Obi-Wan's leader unit side is the exact same as his leader side except he is missing the requirement of using the force. While Obi-Wan is without a Keyword, he's still promoting the growth of other units which is fitting based on his character.
Some cards that fit well into Obi-wan's 50 card deck are Yaddle - A Chance to Make Things Right, Secretive Sage, Kelleran Beq - The Sabered Hand, Adi Gallia - Stern and Focused, and Jocasta Nu - The Gift of Knowledge.
Avar Kriss - Marshall of Starlight
Avar Kriss made her first appearance in 2021 as a figurehead within the High Republic. She is based entirely around the "Force" mechanic from Legends of the Force, unlike Obi-Wan who only required you to use the Force in order to utilize his Leader ability. Avar Kriss can flip to her leader unit side after achieving 9 or more resources OR if the number of resources you control PLUS the number of times you used the Force this phase is 9 or more. Avar Kris also has the leader ability "Action; Exhaust this leader: The Force is with you."
Avar Kriss does bring a lot of unique Interactions to the table (literally). Let's say you've used the force 4 times in one phase AND you only have 5 resources; first of all, that's impressive, but secondly you can go ahead and DEPLOY YOUR LEADER UNIT THAT SAME PHASE. Avar Kriss's leader unit is a 4 power and 10 health with the static ability of "While the Force is with you, this unit gets +4/+0 and gains Overwhelm."
As a Leader/Leader Unit, Avar Kriss wants us to interact with the Force as much as possible. If your deck for Avar Kriss is heavily reliant on interacting with the Force, you might end up getting a hefty hand if you are wanting to ensure an Overwhelm swing with an 8 body into your opponent's unit and base. You might be able to increase the longevity of the game by dumping those force cards when you feel the demise of your Avar Kriss leader coming soon.
She reminds me a lot of the deck theme "Voltron" in Magic: The Gathering which, of course, stems from the animated series Voltron where tons of things mash together to make one huge unit. It's just that with this leader a lot of her buffed abilities are innate to her, instead of requiring a ton of upgrades be placed in the deck for her.
Let's wrap this section up by going over a list of things that would be fitting within your Avar Kriss deck. Directed by the Force, Grogu - Mysterious Child, Ki-Adi-Mundi - We Must Push On, Youngling Padawan, and Itinerant Warrior.
Cunning Heroic Leaders
Cal Kestis - I Can't Keep Hiding
Cal Kestis can be deployed to their Leader Unit side after you have achieved 4 or more resources and has the following leader ability "Action; Exhaust this leader; Use the Force: An opponent chooses a ready unit they control. Exhaust that unit." As long as you are able to take control of your opponent's board, this ability is excellent and forces them to make the choice on which unit won't be attacking or utilizing their abilities this phase.
As a Leader Unit, Cal Kestis is a 3 power and 4 health Leader Unit with the ability "On Attack: An opponent chooses a ready unit they control. Exhaust that unit." As long as you can keep Cal on the field as a Leader Unit you can choose which of your opponent's units to exhaust. But keeping Cal alive at 4 health is a bit tricky. While he can flip after achieving four or more resources, Cal appears to want a combination of lower cost cards with a control aspect.
What fits this unique criteria? I'd throw Adi Gallia - Stern and Focused, BD-1 - Beep Boo Boo Bweep, Mind Trick, Premonition of Doom, and Watto - No Money, No Parts, No Deal.
Qui-Gon Jinn - Student of the Living Force
Qui-Gon Jinn can flip to his Leader Unit side as an Epic action after achieving 6 or more resources and has the following ability "Action; Exhaust this leader; use the force: Return a friendly non-leader unit to its owner's hand. Play a non-villainous unit that costs less than the returned unit from your hand for free."
Qui-Gon brings a very... interesting and beneficial form of cheating Units out. Instead of just finding a way to bring a unit out equal to the amount of resources you may have, or even reducing the cost of a unit to get it onto the field a little easier, you can exhaust Qui-Gon, use the force, return an opposing unit, and THEN play a non-villainous unit that cost less than the returned unit without playing its cost. The only real restriction you may run into is having the Force, but we have plenty of bases that easily enable you to gain the Force.
Qui-Gon Jinn as a leader unit is a 4 power and 7 health leader unit with "When this unit completes an attack: You may return a friendly non-leader unit to its owner's hand. Then, play a non-villainous unit from your hand that has a cost less than the returned unit from your hand for free." So Qui-Gon wants us to play more units while clearing out your opponent's board. This leader is much more aligned with a control feel than Cal Kestis is, but let's go over what cards from Legends of the Force align well with this leader.
I'd definitely align this leader with a Force related theme in both the mechanic and the unit by playing cards like Owen Lars - Devoted Uncle, Anakin Skywalker - Champion of Mortis, Obi-Wan Kenobi - Protective Padawan, Kelleran Beq - The Sabered Hand, Qui-Gon Jinn - The Negotiations Will Be Short, and Qui-Gon Jinn's Lightsaber.
Aggression Heroic Leaders
Rey - Nobody
Rey has the leader ability "Action ; Exhaust this leader: If you played a non-unit Force card this phase, deal 1 damage to a unit." Then, as an Epic Action, as long as you possess seven or more resources, you may deploy Rey to her leader's side. Rey's Leader Unit is a 6 power 8 health leader unit with "When Deployed: You may discard your hand. If you do, draw 2 cards." Going back to Magic: The Gathering Return to Ravnica references... Rey reminds me a whole lot of an Izzet Spellslinger kind of leader. However, Rey specifies Force non-unit cards. The good news for us is that this could be a Force upgrade, or even a Force Event. As long as it's not a Unit. Rey even assists us in drawing the desired cards with her deploy ability.
But what cards from Legends of the Force would we utilize with Rey? I would utilize Merrin - Alone with the Dead, Soresu Stance, Whirlwind of Power, Directed by the Force, Do or Do Not, Force Illusion, The Father - Maintaining Balance, and Rey - With Palpatine's Power.
Kit Fisto - Focused Jedi Master
Kit Fisto has the leader ability "Action; Exhaust one resource; exhaust this leader: If you attacked with a Jedi unit this phase, deal 2 damage to a unit." After you have achieved 5 or more resources, as an epic action you may flip Kit Fisto to his leader unit side which is a 1 power and 6 toughness leader with the keyword Saboteur and has the static ability "This unit gets +1/+0 for each other friendly Jedi unit."
Kit Fisto clearly wants us to build a Jedi tribal style deck being both his leader ability and leader unit rely on the Jedi trait. His leader ability also allows us to shoot down other units while potentially attacking into them, but he also wants us to keep other Jedi units on the board so that once we deploy Kit Fisto he is as large as possible in the power stat and swings past Sentinel toward your opponent's base. The refreshing thing about this Leader is that where most other Leaders from Legend of the force want you to utilize the "Use the Force" mechanic, Kit Fisto does not. Which means we aren't forced to find ways to gain the force with this leader.
Let's talk about what Jedi we should place into a 50 card deck for Kit Fisto. I would recommend cards such as Gungi - Finding Himself, Saesee Tiin - Courageous Warrior, Yaddle - A Chance to Make Things Right, and Cin Drallig - Esteemed Blademaster.
Heroic Leader
Anakin Skywalker - Tempted by the Dark Side
You did read that right. Much like how in my last piece going over the Villainous leaders of Legends of the Force and Revan was our first ever Villainous leader, Anakin Skywalker is our first Heroic only aspect leader. Anakin has the leader ability "Action; exhaust this leader; use the Force: Play a villainous non-unit card from your hand, ignoring its aspect penalties." Alongside Anakin's leader ability, as an Epic Action, after achieving 5 or more resources, you can flip Anakin onto his leader side which is a 4 power and 6 toughness leader unit with the ability "Actions [use the Force]: Play a villainous non-unit card from your hand, ignoring its aspect penalties."
Anakin, like Rey, wants us to play with non-units cards but more specifically... villainous non-leader unit cards. Otherwise, you just have a Heroic Leader Unit with 4 power and 6 toughness. We aren't given a whole lot of pure Villainous or Heroic cards in Legends of the Force, as is usual with the majority of Star Wars sets. But let's take a look at what Villainous cards from Legends of the Force would be best utilized by Anakin Skywalker.
There are only four pure Villainous non-unit cards coming out of this set, and really only two of them benefit this leader depending on your build. These two cards are Consumed by the Dark Side and In the Shadows. Outside of pure Villainous cards I would recommend Drain Essence, The Tragedy of Plagueis, and Death Field.
But that's it for today's review. Which one of these leaders really speaks to you?
May we meet again, fellow Space Journeyers.
