The Top 5 Sultai Commanders

Reddit

Sultai is the color identity of resource abuse. Wait, hear me out. It thrives on graveyard recursion, card advantage, and overwhelming inevitability. If Abzan is the color of resilience, Sultai is the color of inevitability--it doesn't just outlast opponents, it ensures they never recover.

This list features the five best Sultai commanders, each bringing their own brand of dominance to the table. If you want to grind out value, double your triggers, or simply steal your opponent's best cards, there's a Sultai commander just for you.

5. Glarb, Calamity's Augur - The Frog King err... Wizard Noble

Glarb, Calamity's Augur

Key Cards

Glarb is a hopping catastrophe, and its set of abilities make it a great value commander. At 3 mana, this 2/4 Noble Frog is easy to cast. It has deathtouch but Glarb isn't one for the frontlines, so it doesn't matter. This Augur allows you to look at the top of your library anytime which is supplemented by the fact that Glarb can tap to Surveil 2. Yep, really good synergy there. What puts lil Froggy on this is his last ability: you may play lands and cast spells of 4 mana value or higher from the top of your library.

This means Glarb thrives in a deck stacked with high-value haymakers and topdeck manipulation. Cards like Scroll Rack, Sensei's Divining Top, and Mystic Forge (yes, it works) become borderline busted. You'll want a critical mass of impactful four-drops and up--think Cultivator Colossus, Sepulchral Primordial, and Alrund's Epiphany. Since Glarb lets you play lands off the top, cards like Oracle of Mul Daya pair perfectly. You're essentially building a value engine that filters the top of your library while unleashing haymakers. And yes, you should absolutely run Bolas's Citadel, because when your commander is already peeking at the top, you might as well break the game wide open.

4. Tasigur, the Golden Fang - The King of Politics

Tasigur, the Golden Fang

Key Cards

Tasigur is the ultimate Sultai schemer, giving you repeatable card advantage while also playing the political game very well. You cast him for cheap using delve, then keep using his activated ability to "convince" opponents to give you back what they think is safe. (Spoiler: it's never safe.)

The best builds either go hard control or infinite combo. Mystic Remora and Rhystic Study ensure you always have more cards, while Tainted Pact and Demonic Consultation set up an instant-win with Thassa's Oracle. If you prefer a longer game, keep looping permission spells like Cryptic Command and Fact or Fiction until your opponents realize they're trapped in a recursion loop from hell.

3. Yarok, the Desecrated - The ETB King

Yarok, the Desecrated

Key Cards

Yarok, the Desecrated is what happens when you take a normal Sultai value ETB deck and crank the absurdity up to eleven. If it has an enter-the-battlefield ability, Yarok wants it. If it doubles triggers, it's in the deck.

Some of the best cards are simple value engines: Mulldrifter draws you four cards, Solemn Simulacrum ramps you twice, and Eternal Witness gives you back two cards. But things go off the rails once you introduce Panharmonicon and Deadeye Navigator--at that point, you're just playing a game of "how many triggers before my opponents leave?"

For maximum degeneracy, consider Lotus Cobra, Tatyova, Benthic Druid, and Risen Reef.

Once you've had your fill, end the game with a Craterhoof Behemoth that will trigger twice, and so will your opponents' sense of despair.

2. The Wise Mothman - The Mutant Monarch

The Wise Mothman

Key Cards

The Wise Mothman may look like he's just here to drop some lore but don't be fooled--this bug is buffing your board and warping your win conditions. For four mana, you get a 4/4 with two relevant abilities. First, whenever Mothman enters or attacks, each player gets a rad counter. That may not seem like much--until you realize rad counters open the door to proliferate synergies, poison-based subthemes, and general chaos.

But the real draw is that whenever one or more nonland cards are milled, you get to put that many +1/+1 counters on up to X creatures--meaning every little mill trigger turns into a scaling army buff. Mill three? Three counters, divided as you wish. Mill ten? That's a board-wide gym session.

Wise Mothman decks want to mill constantly and explosively with cards like Mesmeric Orb, Fraying Sanity, and Mind Grind.. You're not just trying to deck opponents--you're trying to supercharge your creatures in the process.

1. Muldrotha, the Gravetide - The Queen of Recursion

Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Key Cards

If Sultai had a monarch, her name would be Muldrotha, the Gravetide. This commander doesn't just play Magic--it replays Magic: the Gathering cards. Over. And over. Again.

Muldrotha decks are all about maximizing your permanents. Every turn, you get one land, one enchantment, one creature, one artifact, one battle, and one planeswalker straight from the graveyard. Spore Frog locks down combat. Sylvan Safekeeper protects Muldrotha. Strip Mine lets you blow up lands. And if you really want to break things, play Ashaya, Soul of the Wild to turn every creature into a land, making them infinitely recastable.

This deck is nearly unkillable--it shrugs off removal, laughs at board wipes, and keeps the pressure on. The longer Muldrotha is on the board, the harder it gets to stop her. Feeling evil? Throw in a Mindslaver for infinite turns. Because if you're gonna break the game, you might as well shatter it.

Sultai Supreme

Sultai isn't just a wedge--it's a playstyle. Every commander here is a masterclass in resource manipulation, and each one brings something uniquely devastating to the table. Whether you want to grind opponents into dust with Muldrotha, double every trigger with Yarok, or trick people into letting you win with Tasigur, there's a Sultai commander for you.
