The Best Dragon Commanders in Magic: The Gathering

Reddit

With Tarkir: Dragonstorm freshly unleashed on the Magic: The Gathering populace, dragons have once again claimed the skies of Commander. The set delivered a tidal wave of dragon typal support, Omen spells, and a trio of terrifying new Spirit Dragons. It's a glorious time to be a Dragon player and the Elder Dragon Highlander landscape has officially entered its draconic age.

This list celebrates true Dragons only - no shapeshifting stand-ins like Morophon, the Boundless or planeswalker-turned-scaly-enthusiasts like Sarkhan, Soul Aflame. If it doesn't have the Dragon creature type, it's not in the flight plan.

So, let's dive right in.

7. Teval, the Balanced Scale

Teval, the Balanced Scale

Teval is the breakout graveyard grinder from Tarkir: Dragonstorm and might just be the most elegantly oppressive dragon in years. Every attack mills you three cards, potentially fueling your next land drop and future recursion - and that's before you even factor in the army of 2/2 Zombie Druids it poops out whenever cards leave your graveyard.

It's recursive, synergistic, and can dominate grindy pods while still scaling explosively with self-mill, dredge, or Escape-style value. Graveyard players have found their new Spirit Dragon overlord.

Must Includes:

6. Betor, Kin to All

Betor, Kin to All

At first glance, Betor looks like a weird build-around with a toughness theme. But in practice? It's a toughness check for the entire table. Betor rewards you for playing bulky dragons, walls, or just sheer mass - and once you hit that 40+ toughness threshold, it turns into a game-ending clock, draining opponents for half their life every end step.

With access to Abzan's grindy suite of removal, recursion, and protection - Betor can stall, scale, and spike faster than many expected.

Must Includes:

5. Scion of the Ur-Dragon

Scion of the Ur-Dragon

Old but gold, Scion of the Ur-Dragon remains a versatile, combo-happy commander. Its ability to become a copy of any Dragon in your deck (by tutoring it to the graveyard) opens up endless possibilities.

Scion decks reward deep dragon libraries and clever sequencing, and with all the new Tarkir: Dragonstorm tools, the graveyard is even more stacked in 2025.

Must Includes:

4. Ureni of the Unwritten

Ureni of the Unwritten

Ureni is the new terror from Tarkir: Dragonstorm. It lets you cheat a Dragon from the top eight cards of your library every time it enters or attacks. In the right deck, this becomes an unstoppable value engine - especially when paired with blink or extra combat effects.

Think of Ureni as the Dragon that asks: "Why cast when you can just attack and get a winged beastie for free?"

Must Includes:

3. Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm

Still one of the most explosive midrange dragon engines in Commander, Miirym turns every nontoken Dragon into a double threat. Drop a Terror of the Peaks? Now you have two. Cast a Scourge of Valkas? Double the fire.

This Sentinel Wyrm opens up different lines: ETBs, tokens, or combo finishes, Miirym doesn't just play dragons - it breeds them.

Must Includes:

2. The Ur-Dragon

The Ur-Dragon

The OG, the lore-lord, the one who needs no introduction - The Ur-Dragon is the face of Dragon Commander decks. Its Eminence ability makes every Dragon spell cheaper while safely sitting in the command zone, and its attack trigger can snowball out of control by cheating permanents into play.

But fame comes at a price. The Ur-Dragon is so iconic (and feared) that you'll be the table's first target. Just make sure you've got ramp, protection, and a plan - because once you start swinging, the game might be over.

Must Includes:

1. Tiamat

Tiamat is the dragon tutor of choice - grab five unique dragons and stock your hand like a collector flexing a binder page. While not inherently busted on its own, Tiamat's value is tied to your toolbox.

And with Tarkir: Dragonstorm introducing new utility Dragons like Runescale Stormbrood and Scavenger Regent (Omen spells attached for extra value), Tiamat's "choose five" is more stacked than ever. It's the perfect commander if you want a dragon deck that plays like a control-combo hybrid - always drawing the right firepower.

Must Includes:

  • [card]Scavenger Regent" href="/p/Magic+The+Gathering/Scavenger Regent" href="/p/Magic+The+Gathering/[card]Scavenger Regent">[card]Scavenger Regent">Scavenger Regent" href="/p/Magic+The+Gathering/[card]Scavenger Regent">[card]Scavenger Regent - Tutorable boardwipe that gets past indestructible.
  • Ganax, Astral Hunter - Ramp from every dragon ETB.
  • Call the Spirit Dragons - Hey, go big or go home right?

A Storm of Dragons

Tiamat

Dragons in Commander have never been this deep, diverse, or downright dangerous. With the release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, we're witnessing a new golden age - where graveyards fuel zombie-spawn engines, more ETBs cheat winged monsters into play, and toughness-based triggers can decimate pods in a single turn.

The set doesn't just bring new toys - it redefines what Dragon decks can be. From relentless recursion with Teval to Betor's build-around brilliance, every deck on this list proves that dragons are no longer clunky relics of Elder Dragon Highlander past.

Now is the perfect time to update your dragon binder, brew something bold, and embrace the storm. Because in April 2025, Dragons are the meta - and the skies are only getting hotter.
