The Final Fantasy crossover is everything I (and the countless Final Fantasy fans worldwide) wanted - and more. From iconic characters and Summons, this set feels like a love letter to longtime fans of both franchises. And for Commander players? There's a treasure trove of playable, build-around-worthy legends and value-packed support cards.
Note: This article focuses only on the main set, not the upcoming Commander precons. While spoiler season isn't quite finished (as of writing, 215 of 233 cards have been revealed), I couldn't wait to share my early top picks for EDH greatness.
Terra, Magical Adept // Esper Terra
Best New Saga Commander (and it's 5-color)
Let's get the obvious hype pick out of the way: Terra is the trance-formed lovechild of Tom Bombadil and a college Literature syllabus.
When Terra enters, she mills five cards and can grab an enchantment among them to hand - already solid. But her Trance ability flips her into Esper Terra, a flying 6/6 Saga creature that lets you relive Saga triggers like you're rebooting Final Fantasy VI for the fifteenth time.
The fourth chapter creates mana and flips her back, encouraging you to loop enchantments with ETB/LTB triggers.
Terra slots into or leads:
- Five-color Saga builds (joining Tom Bombadil and Satsuki, the Living Lore in the Saga club)
- Enchantress decks that use mill as fuel
- New "Summon" sagas like Summon: Titan, which are enchantment creatures and count for Terra's synergy
Notable Enchantments to include:
- The Eldest Reborn - Removal and reanimation
- Binding of the Titans - More self-mill and recursion
- Sterling Grove - Protects your Sagas
The 5 mana Crystals
Excellent Support Artifacts for Mono-Color EDH
Each Crystal costs four mana and represents one color of Magic. They reduce your colored spells by one colorless mana, offer a static or replacement effect, and include a six-mana tap ability tied to their color's theme. And yes - they're all Legendary Artifacts.
- The Fire Crystal - Grants haste and creates temporary token copies.
- The Water Crystal - Boosts mill and can punish opponents for holding cards.
- The Earth Crystal - Doubles +1/+1 counters. Arguably the most EDH-relevant.
- The Wind Crystal - Lifegain doubling and a mass flying/lifelink anthem.
- The Darkness Crystal - Exiles dying enemy creatures, gains you life, and reanimates them under your control.
They're not auto-includes, but they're definitely worth considering in any mono-color deck. In my book, The Earth Crystal and the Fire Crystal are the best of the bunch.
Cloud, Midgar Mercenary
White Gets an Equipment Tutor That Slaps and Slices
At just 2 mana, Cloud is a 2/1 with two major upsides:
- ETB tutor for any Equipment straight to hand.
- If equipped, any Equipment-triggered ability triggers an additional time.
We've had Equipment tutors on a creature (Stoneforge Mystic), but now we get one as a Commander with built-in payoff. Equip Cloud with:
- Sword of Feast and Famine - double untap and double discard
- Skullclamp - draw four if it dies
- Pip-Boy 3000 - flexible options times two
This is a low-to-the-ground mono-White equipment general with a high ceiling and an incredibly efficient cost. And hey, Cloud also works well in the 99!
Traveling Chocobo
A Landfall and Value Engine in Feathered Form
This isn't just a cute bird - it's a three-mana Oracle of Mul Daya variant with a unique twist.
Traveling Chocobo lets you:
- Look at the top card of your library at all times
- Play lands and cast Birds from the top
- Double triggers caused by a land or Bird entering the battlefield
That last ability is quietly powerful. Pair with
Even if you never build a Bird tribal deck (someone will), this card deserves a test in mono-Green value decks, landfall brews, or Bant blink shells.
Buster Sword
An Honorary New Member of the "Swords of X and Y" Club
This iconic Equipment offers:
- +3/+2 boost
- On combat damage to a player: draw a card, then cast a spell for free (mana value less than or equal to damage dealt)
In a deck that pumps creatures or gives them double strike, this can be a serious value engine. Try it with:
- Cloud, Midgar Mercenary (triggers both effects twice)
- Rogue's Passage or Whispersilk Cloak for evasion
- Let Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER wield it. Read my other article for ideas on Cloud builds.
This belongs in Voltron and Equipment decks and could even sneak into decks that care about casting spells from hand for free.
Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER // One-Winged Angel
The Best New Aristocrat
Sephiroth enters, lets you sacrifice a creature, and draws you a card. But the Magic happens when four creatures die in one turn - he transforms into One-Winged Angel and grants you a permanent emblem:
"Whenever a creature dies, target opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1."
That is an aristocrats dream emblem.
On top of that, his transformed version lets you sacrifice any number of creatures when he attacks and draw that many cards.
Staples to include:
- Reassembling Skeleton
- Grave Pact and Dictate of Erebos
- Pitiless Plunderer
- Viscera Seer
- Token engines like Ophiomancer and Bitterblossom
He's mono-Black and extremely efficient. Expect him to slot into sacrifice decks or lead his own version of mono-Black aristocrats.
Vivi Ornitier
Izzet Combo Potential with Competitive Buzz
Three mana for a 0/3 doesn't scream broken - until you read the abilities.
- Pay 0 (so it's free!) to add X mana of Blue and/or red, where X is Vivi's power
- Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Vivi and deal 1 damage to each opponent
You only get the mana ability once per turn, and only on your turn, but that's plenty enough. Buff Vivi's power and suddenly you're casting cantrips, generating free mana, and pinging the table in a Guttersnipe meets Magus Lucea Kane loop.
Great cards to include:
This is a powerful storm engine, a ping-and-draw machine, and a combo enabler. It's no wonder even the cEDH crowd is watching. Read this article if you want to learn about what combo lines exist for Vivi Ornitier.
Fantastic Final Thoughts
This Final Fantasy set is already proving to be one of the most flavorful - and Commander-relevant - Universes Beyond releases yet. The entire set (so far) is a flavor-meets-function home run.
Got a favorite I missed? Planning to build around Sephiroth, or sliding Buster Sword into your Squall, SeeD Mercenary list? Let me know - and happy brewing until the official release on June 13, 2025.
