Top 5 Green Cards from Final Fantasy for Commander

Reddit

Final Fantasy fans and Commander fiends alike are feasting this set - and Green might just be the most impactful color of the bunch. My picks contain landfall haymakers to top-deck schemers, the synergy in this batch of Green cards is tighter than a Limit Break at 1 HP. Here are my five favorite Green cards from the Final Fantasy set, and why they're worth sleeving up at your next Commander night. Ain't it such a wonderful coincidence that Green colored materia in Final Fantasy 7 grants you spells? In no particular order, here we go!

Tifa Lockhart

Tifa Lockhart

There's a reason the community's already talking about Tifa as a turn-three win condition in 60-card formats because her landfall doubling her power can close games out fast. In Commander, she slots beautifully into Voltron builds as she can lead her own nature-championing landfall punch-fest. Play a fetch land, blink, and suddenly you're staring down 8 power with trample. And she's only two mana.

Tiifa also has a lot of thematic support cards to aid her: Tifa's Limit Break and Ride the Shoopuf are great includes to buff our femme fatale up.

Landfall all stars such as Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Bristly Bill, Spine Sower, and Exploration ensure that Ms. Lockart cleans house as long as the lands keep a comin'.

Traveling Chocobo

Traveling Chocobo

Yes, it's an adorable birb. But also? It's like an Oracle of Mul Daya and Ancient Greenwarden had a feathered child that costs one mana less. In a landfall or token shell (like Omnath, Locus of Creation or The Necrobloom), doubling your triggers turns your ramp into warp speed. As with Tifa Lockhart, landfall top picks are in order: Lotus Cobra, Tireless Provisioner, and Avenger of Zendikar are choice cuts from the lengthy landfall list.

It's niche, but tribal fans might finally get their Bird deck off the ground as you can cast birds off the top of your deck. If you're raring to take some of these birds for a spin (or throw 'em in together in a deck), then Choco, Seeker of Paradise is the best (and only) bird choice! Okay, Bartz and Boko is an option too though.

Professor Hojo

Professor Hojo

Hojo is low-key one of the best Green draw engines we've seen stapled on a Green creature in a while... for specific shells that is. He works well as the head of or in the 99 of a voltron shell as he draws you cards for the first instance of targeting and reduces the cost of an equip or aura. He essentially pays you twice for doing what your deck already wants to do: load your creatures with abilities and see what happens. I'd prefer Professor Hojo in the 99 though like in a Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER or Dogmeat, Ever Loyal deck. Can you imagine Hojo helping Cloud, Midgar Mercenary equip a Buster Sword?

Summoning Materia

Summoning Materia

This turns any creature into a stat-boosted Augur of Autumn with mana production capabilities to boot. Wow, that's already a mouthful at 3 mana. Oh, and it even gives vigilance too because why not. Summoning: Materia is Green's answer to "how do I get consistent card advantage without drawing?" and it plays beautifully with any deck that wants to curve out into beefy creatures off the top of the deck. It's especially gross in Nissa, Resurgent Animist, Goreclaw, or any stompy strategy. Also, it's an Equipment with a relevant color identity - so finally, your mono-Green decks can play like artifact value engines.

To keep the Green value train going try playing these cards with these mystical materia: Vizier of the Menagerie, Vivien, Monsters' Advocate, Soul of the Harvest, and The Great Henge.

The Earth Crystal

The Earth Crystal

This card reads like it was tailor-made for Commander. Cost reduction? Check. Counter doubling? Check. Built-in scalable ability? Check. Scratch that - it IS tailor made for EDH, baby!

Whether you're in Skullbriar, the Walking Grave or Shalai and Hallar or the dozens of decks that go +1/+1 happy, The Earth Crystal is basically a Branching Evolution melded together with an Emerald Medallion. But it's even better scalability-wise because in the late game, the tap ability keeps you relevant even after your hand's gone flat. If this doesn't end up in your Green EDH deck, it must be because you don't care about +1/+1 counters.

Imagine running this with Inspiring Call for the card draw or Rishkar, Peema Renegade to transform your dudes into mana dorks.

Green Supreme

This set brings more than just nostalgia. It's a surprisingly deep design space that translates Final Fantasy flavor into real Commander gas - and Green might be the most consistent color of the lot. Think about it: these new crop of commander cards summons from the top or roundhouse-kicks your opponents with a monstrous landfall monk, there's a lot of synergy and spice here.
