Every Magic: The Gathering set that crosses into Universes Beyond brings new toys for Commander, and Marvel's Spider-Man doesn't disappoint. Green, in particular, comes out swinging with a mix of powerhouse enchantments, sneaky legends, and a healthy dose of humor (yes, there's a talking pig in the mix).
Let's dive into the five best green cards for Commander from this set.
Web of Life and Destiny
This is one of those splashy enchantments that screams "Commander table." For a hefty 8 mana (thank goodness for Convoke), you get an engine that flips the top of your library into pure creature gas every combat. Look at your top five, drop one onto the field, rinse and repeat every turn cycle.
It's like Lurking Predators met Tooth and Nail at a comic-con and decided to cosplay together. What makes it especially good is the inevitability: left unchecked, it snowballs into an unstoppable army without costing you more cards in hand. Convoke makes it much more castable, especially in token-heavy builds. And the trigger happening right before combat means that you get the value on the same turn you cast it.
Plays well with:
- Avenger of Zendikar and Hornet Queen to flood the board with bodies, both to Convoke and to hit off the enchantment.
- Mirri's Guile or Sylvan Library to arrange the top of your deck
- Selvala, Heart of the Wilds to turn each new fatty into even more mana.
- Garruk's Uprising for card draw everytime a fatty enters
Sandman, Shifting Scoundrel
This legendary elemental villain is a land-matters Commander's dream. His power and toughness scale with the number of lands you control, which makes him big in Green decks naturally. The real kicker, though, is his recursion ability: for four mana, you can return both him and a land card from your graveyard right onto the battlefield tapped. That's value, resilience, and inevitability all in one sandy package.
The "can't be blocked by creatures with power 2 or less" clause may not look like much, but it means he swings through utility blockers and chump armies, ensuring your giant beater actually connects.
Plays well with:
- Crucible of Worlds and Ramunap Excavator to keep recycling fetchlands.
- World Shaper and Splendid Reclamation for full-board land explosions.
- Icetill Explorer from Edge of Eternities is a perfect card
- Greater Good is an amazing way to sacrifice Sandman, Shifting Scoundrel and net you big card draw
Lizard, Connors's Curse
A 5/5 trampler for four is already aggressively costed, but Lizard takes things further with his "Lizard Formula." When he enters, he strips a creature of all abilities and locks it in as a vanilla 4/4. That's removal, disruption, and comedy rolled into one card. Watching an opponent's Atraxa, Praetors' Voice suddenly become a sad little 4/4 lizard is worth the slot alone.
As a commander, he gives you access to Green's suite of +1/+1 counter and fight effects, letting you weaponize his beefy frame while keeping the board in check. He's simple but brutally effective.
Plays well with:
- Blade of Selves gives you multiple removal spells
- Rishkar, Peema Renegade to turn him and his new 4/4 friends into mana dorks.
- Conjurer's Closet can keep you blinking Lizard every turn for free
- The Great Henge because of course the big lizard curves into it.
Strength of Will
Spider-Man flavor meets classic Green trick. For just two mana, you give a creature indestructible until end of turn, and whenever it's dealt damage, it bulks up with +1/+1 counters.
Think about it in decks with enrage creatures or damage synergies: suddenly, taking a hit isn't just survivable, it's beneficial. It's also an instant-speed insurance policy against board wipes, since indestructibility can blank your opponent's carefully timed Wrath of God.
Plays well with:
- Polyraptor and Ripjaw Raptor to farm infinite or near-infinite triggers.
- Stuffy Doll and Brash Taunter for hilarious ping loops.
- Vigor to go all-in on the damage-into-counters game plan.
- Wolverine, Best There Is a classic Marvel team-up
Spider-Ham, Peter Porker
The set's comedy relief card also happens to be surprisingly strong. Spider-Ham creates a Food token when he enters, which already plays nicely with sacrifice or life-gain strategies. But the real juice is his Animal May-Ham ability, which turns him into a kindred-lord for one of the strangest tribes in Magic: The Gathering.
Suddenly, your deck full of Beasts, Dogs, Frogs, Rats, and yes, Spiders, gets a blanket +1/+1. The tribe is bigger than it looks, and Spider-Ham makes it viable in Commander. At just 2 mana, he's a cheap, flavorful lord that brings both value and laughs to the table.
Suggested includes:
- Chatterfang, Squirrel General to flood the board with buffed squirrels.
- Pack Leader to supercharge Dogs.
- Arachnogenesis for the surprise "block and pump my Spiders" blowout.
Closing Webs
Marvel's Spider-Man comes web-swinging out of the gates with Green cards worth weaving into your Commander decks. This is just my first round up of what this new set has in store but the web of possibilities has never looked this wild.
