The Top 5 Supreme Simic Commanders

Reddit

In Commander, many Magic: The Gathering players believe that the strongest color pair is Simic - the fusion of Blue and Green mana. And, most of them aren't wrong as Simic synergizes the most with Commander's core mechanics of ramp, card draw, threats, and answers.

Here's a list of the strongest Simic commanders that will surely make a splash in your next game of Commander.

Number Five

Hakbal of the Surging Soul

Heading up the tidal wave that is this Simic list is the four mana 3/3 Merfolk Scout, Hakbal of the Surging Soul. This merfolk is one of, if not the strongest, merfolk aggro deck commander choices. Hakbal has two abilities: the first is to give ALL merfolks you control the ability to explore during your combat step. This effect can either draw you lands or pump up every merfolk you have. Card advantage (or filtering) or growing your threats? Sign me up. But wait, there's more. Whenever Hakbal attacks, you can either play a land from your hand or draw a card.

Building Hakbal means putting in aggressively costed merfolk that pump your army further like Merfolk Sovereign, Merrow Reejerey, and Master of the Pearl Trident. Aggro decks sometimes run the risk of losing gas, shore up that weaknes with Bident of Thassa, Seafloor Oracle, and Tatyova, Benthic Druid. Overwhelming the opposition is easy with the Surging Soul.

Number Four

Koma, Cosmos Serpent

Keeping up the oceanic assault is big baddie Koma, Cosmos Serpent. This massive 6/6 Serpent costs 7 mana but is a gigantic a threat that will command respect when it hits the table. Koma is uncounterable so there should be no worries about having your 7 mana go to waste. Every upkeep (yes, yours and your opponents') Koma makes a 3/3 Serpent token. His other ability is an activated one that costs sacrificing a Serpent to let you choose from two strong abilities. You can either tap a target permanent and prevent it from using its activated abilities. The second ability makes Koma indestructible. So, uncounterable, produces an army, silences a permanent, AND protects itself.

Koma lends itself well to a controlling shell as it can be the main threat. Green can be used to ramp out with Nature's Lore, Farseek, Three Visits, and Skyshroud Claim. While Blue can play the control card with Counterspell, Reality Shift, and Cyclonic Rift. A resolved Koma, Cosmos Serpent signals a wave of triumph.

Number Three

Adrix and Nev, Twincasters

This pair (well, not really two separate commanders) of Merfolk Wizards are doubly hard to deal with. Despite being a 2/2 for 4 mana, these Adrix and Nev have Ward 2. The main draw to running this commander is that it's almost like having Doubling Season available from the command zone as Adrix and Nev, Twincasters doubles the number of tokens you create. Yep, treasures, creature tokens, food... you name it!

Upping up the token production means you need to run other token generators like Hornet Queen, Tendershoot Dryad, and Arasta of the Endless Web. If you love maths, then throw in Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Primal Vigor into the mix. What to do with all them tokens? Jaheira, Friend of the Forest and Cryptolith Rite lets you tap 'em for mana. From there, Craterhoof Behemoth and Overwhelming Stampede nets you the win.

Number Two

Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait

Another formidable serpent is on our list. Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait is a 5/5 for 6 mana that lets you play an additional land per turn. It also has a Landfall ability that draws you a card. Yep, ramp and card draw. I told you Simic was banging.

Landfall all stars like Lotus Cobra, Avenger of Zendikar, and Scute Swarm are the no brainder choices for almost any Aesi build. We want to play as many lands as possible so that we can churn through our deck so every card that lets you play more lands are auto includes. Azusa, Lost But Seeking, Loot, Exuberant Explorer, Explore, and Oracle of Mul Daya should be at the top of your list.

We will run a lot of fetchlands so grabbing them back from the graveyard with Crucible of Worlds, Conduit of Worlds, and Ancient Greenwarden make sure you maximize the use of your real estate. Aesi is a card advantage and ramp engine like no other.

Number One

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy

Sitting at the peak of the Simic summit is small but terrible human druid, Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy. This commander is so strong that it is a premiere pick in cEDH! Whenever you tap a nonland permanent (mana dorks and artifacts, for example) Kinnan gives you an additional mana. He does this because his other ability needs 7 mana to activate but it should be no problem. This second ability lets you put a non-Human creature from the top 5 cards of your library. Whew.

Running all the best mana dorks like Birds of Paradise, Enduring Vitality, and Bloom Tender is step one. The next would be using artifact ramp such as Sol Ring, Simic Signet, and Arcane Signet. Basalt Monolith let Kinnan go infinite. Yep, Kinnan needs only one other card to combo off.

Big non-human threats are the order of the day to stomp the competition. Think big like Void Winnower, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger, and Blightsteel Colossus. Oh, and if you want to just win? Toss a Walking Ballista in there to mow down the competition.
