The Ultima(te) Colorless Deck: Ultima, Origin of Oblivion in Commander

Reddit

Hello everyone! I'm Levi from The Thought Vessel, and today we're diving into my new favorite colorless commander deck, featuring the exciting new commander from Final Fantasy: Ultima, Origin of Oblivion. When this card was revealed, I was thrilled. It lines up perfectly with my playstyle and opens up a sweet blend of Eldrazi typal and artifact synergy that's a bit harder to find in colorless builds. Before we jump into the list itself, let's break down what makes this commander such a powerhouse.

The Commander

Ultima, Origin of Oblivion

There's a lot more happening with this commander than you might see at first glance. For colorless players, the most obvious appeal is that it's basically Forsaken Monument in the command zone. Giving all your colorless-producing lands an extra mana boost means we can power out big spells fast--flooding the board with giant threats and backbreaking effects. On top of that, Ultima's a 4/4 flyer, so we can chip away for evasive damage or even lean into a Voltron plan if we want.

Where things get really spicy is the blight counter angle. Ultima can hand them out randomly, but we can also start targeting specific colors, which makes it much harder for opponents to cast multiple spells in a turn--or, in the case of five-color decks, potentially shut out key pieces altogether. This layered pressure gives us more control than most colorless decks usually have, which is a big part of why this deck feels so satisfying to pilot.

The Deck

The deck we're looking at today could technically sit in power level bracket three, but I'd recommend matching up in a bracket four pod for a smoother experience. We're not the fastest deck at the table, so we're aiming to control the board, remove problem pieces, and win through inevitability. Once we hit our stride, the amount of removal and recursion available gives us the upper hand. It may take a few turns to set up, but once the Eldrazi start dropping, we can easily turn the table in our favor. Let's walk through a few standout cards.

Notable Cards

Since our commander mimics Forsaken Monument, it's an easy choice to include the real thing. These kinds of effects kick our mana production into overdrive, letting us cast 10+ mana spells long before most opponents are ready. Ugin, Eye of the Storm might be one of the best cards in the entire list, offering ramp, card draw, and repeatable removal all in one package. Normally, seven mana might be a steep cost, but with all the ramp--especially from our lands--it's surprisingly easy to get it online.

We're also running both that Ugin and Ugin, the Ineffable. The Spirit Dragon gives us a one-sided board wipe and an ultimate that can quickly end the game, while the Ineffable reduces the cost of all our spells by two and gives us a steady stream of value through removal and card advantage.

Ramp-wise, we're leaning into cards like Burnished Hart, Wayfarer's Bauble, and Solemn Simulacrum. Since Ultima only enhances mana from our lands, these cards help us accelerate in a way that synergizes perfectly with our game plan.

Now let's talk about lands. In a colorless deck, every single land choice matters, because every advantage we gain is one our opponents likely already have access to. We need to make every land count. This deck runs 38 lands, but only nine are basic Wastes.

Naturally, we're running the "Tron lands"--Urza's Mine, Urza's Power Plant, and Urza's Tower. These can ramp us into huge spells early if assembled. We're also playing Urza's Cave, which functions as a tutor in the right situations, and Urza's Workshop, giving us a fourth Urza-named land for synergy. War Room and Arch of Orazca let us convert excess mana into cards, while Plaza of Heroes and Tyrite Sanctum offer protection for Ultima.

Inventors' Fair
Haven of the Spirit Dragon

Inventors' Fair and Haven of the Spirit Dragon help us find and recur key artifacts or dragons, giving us flexibility in the late game. Field of the Dead is a game-changer--thanks to all the unique land names, triggering it is easy, and it provides a steady army of zombies. Thespian's Stage can copy Field of the Dead to double up on tokens. Emergence Zone gives us the ability to play a key spell at instant speed, while Arcane Lighthouse helps us remove creatures with hexproof or shroud.

One of our biggest haymakers is Portal to Phyrexia. If we can land this early, it flips the game on its head--clearing the board and reanimating key threats every turn cycle. Echoes of Eternity might be the most powerful card in the whole list; copying every spell we cast doubles our threat output and can quickly overwhelm opponents.

Given our high curve, Zhulodok, Void Gorger adds even more value by giving us cascade on spells with mana value seven or more--which includes a lot of our threats. Glaring Fleshraker chips away at life totals while giving us Eldrazi Spawn that help ramp out the big guns faster. It's a deceptively strong piece that helps build toward those massive late-game swings.

So... How Are We Going to Win?

This deck closes games with Eldrazi titans. Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre is a 10/10 indestructible annihilator that can tear through boards and remove key pieces on cast. After just a few combat steps, Ulamog leaves opponents scrambling. It That Betrays steals everything opponents sacrifice, turning their losses into our gains. Depending on which version of Emrakul we draw, we can either mind-control an opponent's creatures or even their entire turn.

Kozilek, the Great Distortion offers a brutal mix of card draw, countermagic, and a massive body. Combined with other Eldrazi, we'll be swinging for lethal damage while keeping our grip full and the board under control. The deck's top end is designed to be overwhelming--and if we've ramped properly, it's hard for opponents to stop the closing act.

Wrapping Up

I've included the full list down below. Feel free to copy it directly, use it as a framework for your own take, or just draw a little inspiration from it. I hope this deck gets your gears turning about what's possible in colorless Commander. Until next time, happy gaming!
