Ten for Ten - Toph, the First Metalbender

Reddit

Full honesty here: I never watched Avatar: the Last Airbender. I'm just a little too old, so by the time it was coming out I wasn't interested in animation. Someday.

Doesn't mean I can't like the cards, though! And I have to say, when I saw this guy, I wanted to mess with this ability so bad.

Toph, the First Metalbender

Watch out for Blood Moon. Let's look at some cards which would be great with Toph, shall we?

Honorable Mention #1: Vastwood Animist

Vastwood Animist

We're going to talk about turning Lands into Creatures later in this list, but this guy deserves special mention, because Toph is also an Ally. If you really want to surprise people, make a Ally Kindred deck with Toph and no one will have any idea what's going on.

Honorable Mention #2: Lotus Cobra and Tireless Provisioner and Mina and Denn, Wildborn

Lotus Cobra
Tireless Provisioner
Mina and Denn, Wildborn

It's a bit of a convoluted combo, but two effects which make mana when a Land Enters plus Mina and Denn, Wildborn and a zero-cost Artifact will make infinite Landfall triggers (yes, with Toph on the 'field, nontoken Artifacts trigger Landfall!). With a third one (Nissa, Resurgent Animist) you get infinite mana. A Nissa, Vital Force Emblem will draw each iteration.

Honorable Mention #3: Foundry Inspector

Any card which reduces the cost of our Artifacts will likely be useful here. If you're going for the goofy combo we just read, it becomes much easier, but it also just makes casting a lot of Artifacts in a single turn much easier.

Honorable Mention #4: Bear Umbra

Bear Umbra

Anything which untaps all our Lands will also untap all our nontoken Artifacts. (See also: Sword of Feast and Famine.) This makes mana rocks much stronger, and allows us to use tap abilities of Artifacts more often. Sounds pretty good.

On to the list!

Number 10: Ichor Wellspring and Fountainport Bell and Instant Ramen

Ichor Wellspring
Fountainport Bell
Instant Ramen

Eggs get excellent value with Toph! Any cheap Artifact which draws a card when it Enters or Leaves will work double-duty here with Earthbend. Play the Ichor Wellspring, draw a card. Turn it into a Creature, sac it or chump and draw another card, then return it for a third card (and another round, if you want!). Bonus points if the Artifact sacrifices itself; even more if you can make them do damage when they go.

Number 9: Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and Chromatic Lantern and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove
Chromatic Lantern
Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth

One odd aspect of Toph's static ability is the Artifacts which become Lands don't tap for mana. These cards fix that. Wrenn and Realmbreaker, Ashaya, Soul of the Wild, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth (yes, you can play that in a Commander deck without Black!) all work as well, turning all our nontoken Artifacts into mana-producing acres.

Number 8: Scapeshift and Nahiri's Lithoforming

Scapeshift
Nahiri's Lithoforming

These cards both let us leverage our additional Land count for fun and profit. Scapeshift can be combined with Valakut and a bunch of Mountains for big damage, and Nahiri's Lithoforming turns old mana rocks or eggs into cards and new Lands.

Number 7: Strionic Resonator and Panharmonicon

Strionic Resonator
Panharmonicon

Nothing like doubling up a good thing! Strionic Resonator will let us Earthbend two Lands each turn, and Panharmonicon will double up all our Landfall triggers. Ancient Greenwarden is worth a look here too.

Number 6: Meteor Golem and Solemn Simulacrum and Mindslaver

Meteor Golem
Solemn Simulacrum
Mindslaver

Because Earthbend returns the Artifact to the Battlefield, Artifacts with strong Enters or Leaves abilities can be leveraged quite well. Meteor Golem will need to die somehow, but if you can reliably get rid of it every turn after it's been Earthbent, it'll destroy a permanent every turn. Mindslaver deserves special attention here, because it can sacrifice itself and means you can more-or-less take over another player for the rest of the game. Use this carefully!

Number 5: Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor and Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi and Kamahl, Fist of Krosa

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor
Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi
Kamahl, Fist of Krosa

Turning Lands into Creatures is an age-old technique in Magic, but it takes on new meaning when it's also Artifacts. Earthbend that Sol Ring, then Obuun turns it into a 3/3 (making it a 5/5 with its +1/+1 counters!). Woodcaller Automaton does good work here, as do a number of Nissas, and even Skarrg Guildmage is worth a look. Sylvan Awakening could be quite the blowout.

Number 4: Blossoming Tortoise

Blossoming Tortoise

If we're going to turn our Artifacts into Lands and then into Creatures, we may as well have some fun with it. Blossoming Tortoise will reduce the activated abilities of our nontoken Artifacts and give all our Land Creatures a bonus. There are others, like Embodiment of Fury and Sylvan Advocate, but the Tortoise is the must-play for sure.

Number 3: Planar Cleansing

Planar Cleansing

Yeah...

This is rough on our opponents. We can use this to make a one-sided boardwipe, where we end up with a board full of Artifacts (which can be Creatures) and they have almost nothing.

Number 2: Bristly Bill, Spine Sower

Bristly Bill, Spine Sower

I'm using Bristly Bill, Spine Sower as an example for a category I'm calling "Landfall Support." Probably the most obvious abuse of Toph's abilities is we're not limited by one-Land-per-turn like normal, because we can play as many Artifacts as we can get our hands on. If we can figure out a way to play three, four, eight, or 25 Artifacts in a single turn, we can trigger Landfall that many times in a single turn. That's pretty strong. Consider Scythecat Cub, Tireless Tracker, Tunneling Geopede, Canyon Jerboa, and Geode Rager.

Number 1: Avenger of Zendikar and Omnath, Locus of Rage and Titania, Gaea incarnate

Avenger of Zendikar
Omnath, Locus of Rage

Two additional ways to abuse Toph's ability to close out the game!

First, we can use those extra Landfall triggers to make a ton of Creatures with Avenger of Zendikar, Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer, Omnath, Locus of Rage, or others like Chocobo Racetrack, Emeria Angel, Rampaging Baloths, and Scute Swarm. There are lots of these, and just a few plus lots of cheap Artifacts (some Eggs, maybe?) to spit out and recur, combined with some extra card draw, and you'll have quite the army in no time.

Second we can count Lands with Creatures like Titania, Gaea Incarnate, Ground Assault, and Treacherous Terrain. Stomp over your opponents, kill their Creatures, or just do direct damage, but turn those Artifacts-cum-Lands into a much bigger problem than normal for your opponents!

I hope this has given you some inspiration for building with Toph, the First Metalbender!
