Weekly Sale Commander - St. Patrick's Day

Reddit

Hi folks. Welcome to the Weekly Sale Column. This column will show you some cards on sale that might spice up your lists or inspire something completely new. These lists will usually be Commander lists in Bracket 3, so you'll be able to play these in any Bracket 3 (or higher) pods.

If you want to play in lower pods, just swap out the Game Changers for other choices; if you want to compete with Bracket 4 and 5 pods, add more along with some other competitive combos.

Keep in mind that the Game Changers in your deck aren't the only thing that moves you up and down a bracket. Your intent with your deck; inclusions of other interactions, engines, and combos; and overall playgroup should all be factors in your bracket!

Remember that the weekly sale ends on Sunday night at 11:59 PM EST, so you have until then to get your cards ordered.

Lucky Charms

Maralen, Fae Ascendant

For this week's St. Patrick's Day sale, we've got an entire frolic of Faeries in our sale, to represent the almighty leprechaun! There's exactly one leprechaun in Magic: The Gathering, and you can bet that it's in this list. I'd recommend the Commander Masters version of Command Tower as well, since we're trying to get to the end of the rainbow.

We've got an awesome Sultai Faeries deck, led by the recently printed Maralen, Fae Ascendant for today. We had plenty of options for Faeries, but only a few that were Green (and we have to include Green for St. Patrick's Day, am I right?).

Our deck is going to be packed with Elves and Faeries so that we can Mill our opponent's decks and cast their spells. Maralen's strength comes from going wide, since she triggers based off of herself or another Elf or Faerie entering. Our goal will be to flood the board with Elves and Faeries so we can cast all of our opponent's spells via her other ability.

The Faeries

Flitterwing Nuisance
Bitterbloom Bearer
Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor

We've got a ton of Faeries to talk about here. Faeries are notorious for having tons of utility packed in small-costed bodies. For the few that cost a decent bit of mana, their abilities are usually pretty high impact. Since they normally have such a low cost, we'll be able to get tons of value out of them because Maralen will regularly be triggering as we play them, giving us more free spells.

Starting on the small end, we've got Flitterwing Nuisance, Faerie Mastermind, Picklock Prankster, and Talion's Messenger for some card advantage. Flitterwing Nuisance will be especially good once we've flooded the board with plenty of tokens so we can draw a ton of cards all at once with its activated ability.

Bitterbloom Bearer and Bitterblossom fill the role of giving us regular tokens each turn and Obyra, Dreaming Duelist will make it so that our opponents have to lose life with us for each one.

Speaking of which, Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor will both deal the life loss and also draw us cards every time another Faerie dies. As long as we're making chump-blocking tokens, this will happen quite frequently. He pumps your Faeries along with Scion of Oona to make our tiny army quite mighty.

Spellstutter Sprite
Sower of Temptation
Puppeteer Clique

On the controlling side, cards like Spellstutter Sprite and Spell Stutter will counter spells based on the number of Faeries we control. Eventually, this will just be any spell, as we'll have amassed tons. For the noncreatures, Glen Elendra Archmage and Glen Elendra Guardian will help us deal with those.

Brazen Borrower and Sower of Temptation will let us deal with our opponents' on-board threats while Mistbind Clique can give us a tempo play if needed. High Fae Trickster will let us play our spells at instant speed and Faerie Harbinger will let us find any Faerie that we need.

Finally, on the top end, Talion, the Kindly Lord will give us regular card draw as lon as we pick a regular number, Puppeteer Clique can reanimate our opponent's creatures, and Oona, Queen of the Fae will exile more of our opponents' libraries and give us tokens at the same time.

The Elves

Urborg Elf
Formidable Speaker
Rashmi, Eternities Crafter

You could probably argue that Leprechauns are like a weird amalgamation of Faeries and Elves, but either way, we still play lots of Elves here. Elves are great for providing efficient value through mana, which we'll need to get to Maralen faster and to play more creatures.

We've got a plethora of mana dorks to start us off here - Llanowar Elves to make g, Elves of Deep Shadow to make b, Arbor Elf to untap a land, and Urborg Elf to make any of the Sultai colors. Deathrite Shaman is both a mana dork and a way to control our opponent's graveyards and both Priest of Titania and Elvish Archdruid will make mana based on how many Elves we've got.

While not technically a mana dork, Formidable Speaker is probably our secret best card here, giving us access to any creature in our deck and also acting as a way to untap any permanent, potentially netting mana with Priest of Titania/Elvish Archdruid.

Beast Whisperer and Champions of the Perfect will draw us cards when we cast creature spells, giving us regular value. Speaking of value, Rashmi, Eternities Crafter gives our first spell each turn (including our opponents' turns) effectively Cascade, and Lathril, Blade of the Elves will help create regular Elves as long as Lathril is connecting.

While not a Creature spell, Trystan's Command will let us copy any Elf we have along with giving us some extra value. Joining the Not-An-Elf Elf Club as well is Chomping Changeling which we chose to play over Reclamation Sage, since it counts as both an Elf and a Faerie.

Change the Game

Orcish Bowmasters
Seedborn Muse
Biorhythm

For our Game Changers, we're capitalizing on the fact that we're hoping to have tons of Creatures in play and that we have lots of instant-speed value (not necessarily for Instants and Sorceries). First, we have Orcish Bowmasters. OBM will create tons of value for you, and while it doesn't trigger Maralen with the Orc, it's utility is unparalleled. If you're not feeling it, I'd swap it for Coiling Oracle (a personal favorite card of mine), since it's an Elf with a nice utility trigger.

Next up is Seedborn Muse. With mana sinks like Oona, Queen of the Fae and Faerie Mastermind along with Springleaf Parade, being able to reuse our mana each turn will give us neverending value that we definitely want.

Finally, fresh off of the banned list, is Biorhythm! At a whopping eight mana, this card is the tippy top of our mana curve, but with our Elves accelerating us, this seemed like the perfect shell. We're not trying to cast it super quick and we don't play a way to tutor it, so we can't abuse it. Our goal is to play it when we have tons of creatures in the late game so that our opponents can just die when we swing in.

I know that some people have been using Maralen in cEDH along with combos like Food Chain + Misthollow Griffin/Eternal Scourge to generate infinite creature mana, letting you mill out your opponent's libraries using Maralen. Cards like Deadeye Navigator and Displacer Kitten also work well here also if you want to jump up to Brackets 4 and 5.

Thanks for reading, have a wonderful St. Patrick's Day!
