Hi folks! Welcome to the Weekly Sale Column! This column will be aimed at showing you some cards on sale that could give you some new ideas for your lists. They will *usually* be Commander lists in Bracket 3 as well so you'll be able to play these in any Bracket 3 (or higher) pods. If you want to play in lower pods, just swap out the Game Changers for other choices and/or add more along with some other competitive combos if you want to compete with Bracket 4 and 5 pods! Remember that the weekly sale ends on Sunday night at 11:59 PM EST, so you have until then to get your cards ordered!
This is the Silver Linings Sale! After a quick scan of the sale, and this list, you'll notice that every card is uncommon (or has an uncommon printing), aside from basic lands. Leading this is the very new Vanille, Cheerful l'Cie! Vanille, from Final Fantasy XIII, pairs up and melds with Fang, Fearless l'Cie to become the almighty Ragnarok, Divine Deliverance. I used to have a Bruna, the Fading Light deck, and let me tell you that Commanders that meld are quite exciting to play. The melded monstrosity, or beast in this case, carries the same properties as your Commander, so it can deal Commander damage! Ragnarok is a 7/6, so it only needs to connect 3 times for the 21 damage knockout, and it has approximately a billion abilities that help it do so. It has Vigilance, Menace, Trample, Reach, and Haste, so it attacks right away, has evasion, and protects you! It also has a death trigger that will destroy any permanent and return a non-legendary permanent from your graveyard back into play. This leads me to create a reanimator list in Golgari, so let's get into it!
Not Even Fate Can Stand in Their Way
Reanimator decks have a long history in Commander as being scary from the start of the game. If you know anything about Reanimator, you know that they can fill their yard and reanimate as early as turn one, with the right draw. Entomb + Reanimate has been a staple in Legacy for over a decade, and it's no surprise that it's powerful in Commander. In our uncommon version, we lose out on that early explosiveness, but we make up for with resilient and reusable cards. Vanille, on her own, helps to fill our yard and retrieve permanent cards, including Fang, so we want to maximize on the quality permanents we put in the deck.
Timeless Witness is an amazing card to be in our graveyard, with its Eternalize ability having use from the yard. Diabolic Servitude is an enchantment that basically lets you continually reanimate a creature from the yard, at the cost of only getting to reuse a creature one more time. It's nice for creatures you don't mind losing to exile once they're gone, like Corpse Connoisseur or Nyx Weaver! Cards like Dread Return, Victimize, Stitch Together, and Rise of the Witch-king are going to be our bread and butter, bringing back all of the value sitting in our graveyard, with other upsides as well.
Fill Our Own Graveyard!
As any reanimator player will tell you, you can have all the reanimator cards in the world, but if you have no targets, then you're done for. We play a good chunk of cards that fill our yard while also giving us other value. Cards with Dredge are great here, since we'd rather draw useful cards and fill our yard instead of potentially drawing a dud. Golgari Thug doubles as a way to reuse some of our yard, Darkblast is good at taking out pesky X/1 creatures, and Dakmor Salvage can get returned to our hand with Golgari Rot Farm, just for us to pitch it to the yard later and reuse it!
Along with dredge, we have other self-mill cards as well, aside from Vanille herself. Stitcher's Supplier is a prime chump blocker in the early game. Aftermath Analyst can sometimes ramp you fast to the late game. Seedship Broodtender, a newer friend from Edge of Eternities, mills and also reanimates, which is pretty much everything we want in a card.
Recur the Nightmare!
No, we're not playing Recurring Nightmare, it's banned (Great googly moogly, I wish I could play Recurring Nightmare here, alas, it's rare anyway). We are, however, playing tons of cards that recur cards to our hand from the yard as well, not just to play. This is useful for bringing back cards that we want to hold for later, or just instants/sorceries to reuse. Eternal Witness, as timeless as their eternalized friend, is a classic recursion engine.
Honest Rutstein doubles as a way to cast creatures faster. We already talked about Nyx Weaver, but I'm gonna mention it again, I love that little recurring spider. Undead Butler mills and also returns something to our hand on death, useful as a chump blocker for something big later on, and Phyrexian Reclamation is about as "reuse my stuff" as it gets!
On top of those recurring cards, we also play a LOT of modal double-face cards. These cards are great because we play a lower land count, and they give us the option to have permanents later if we're satisfied with our mana. Disciple of Freyalise is a fantastic reanimation target if in the yard, Boggart Trawler is great against opposing reanimator decks, and Malakir Rebirth is basically a Reanimate that you can do awesome lines with (looking at you, Shriekmaw).
Fun fact, did you know that Wasteland was originally uncommon? You can totally Wasteland your own modal double-faced land and then reanimate it, which is about as cheeky as a line can get, so I want to see it happen!
Uncommonly Change the Game?
You'll notice that we only play two game changers (yes, they exist at uncommon, no, I don't care that some uncommons were as rare as rares back in the day). Demonic Tutor and Worldly Tutor are perfect in a ![]()
reanimator deck, we want to search whatever we need at any given moment! I considered playing Crop Rotation too, feel free to add it in if you want. You can sacrifice a MDFC in a pinch and search out Dakmor Salvage or Svogthos, the Restless Tomb for a cool line, but I felt that was just a little extra for my tastes.
In terms of making this deck more competitive, it's simple, drop the "uncommon only" vibe! Cards like Entomb, Reanimate, and bigger reanimation targets like Sheoldred, Whispering One or Archon of Cruelty help up your power level, but I like the idea of an uncommon only deck, personally. It's a great way to dip your feet into the format too if you're just starting off, since you likely have access to the majority of these cards right away!
Here's the list, enjoy!
