Commanding Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man

Reddit

Hi folks! We're taking a nice little break from the Weekly Sale column this week to bring you a nice little primer on Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man. My usual deck-building rules will still apply, though. The deck will be in bracket 3, and there will be a section later to highlight how you can beef it up to higher brackets! This deck was a ton of fun to build, and it's really cool having so many Universes Beyond cards in one deck. Getting to say that I'm using Amazing Spider-Man to Web-Sling in Anti-Venom, from the top of my deck with the Crystal Skull, Isu Spyglass, to bring back both The Sixth Doctor and Serah Farron because Gandalf the White doubles my triggers just tickles my fancy to no end. Let's get into it!

Peter Parker, or the more amazing backside, Amazing Spider-Man, has the amazing ability to give your colored legendary spells web-slinging gwu! Web-slinging is an amazing ability (okay, I'll stop calling everything amazing now) that basically says that you can cast a spell for the web-slinging cost, gwu in this case, if you also return a tapped creature you control to its owner's hand. Basically, this means that we want to be playing three types of cards.

Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man

First, we want mana dorks. This is because these will not only help us cast our commander faster so we can get Spidey in play, but they will also satisfy the tapped creature requirement for web-slinging. Second, we want higher-costed legendary spells. By getting to cast these spells for only three mana, we're getting a lot of value out of them by not only playing them early, but they're also winning us the game faster because higher-cost legendary spells tend to have huge impact. Finally, we want support that is at most in the middle range of mana cost, think between 2-5. Anything higher, and we'd rather just play something super impactful. These cards will not only control our game, but also prevent us from losing!

Anyone Can Wear the Mask

First up, we've got mana dorks. These will all be relatively straightforward. Birds of Paradise and Noble Hierarch are Bant no-brainers. We've also got the trifecta of Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, and Fyndhorn Elves. Avacyn's Pilgrim gives us a different color option, and Delighted Halfling taps for any color for Legendary spells, so probably our best one in the deck! We also play Bloom Tender and Faeburrow Elder. If you've ever played these two, you know that they generate mana quite fast, even in a 3-color deck, so they're worth the slots.

Delighted Halfling
Inga and Esika
Relic of Legends

We also play a few other cards that turn our cards into mana-dorks. Inga and Esika, (a single legendary creature, but also a duo-god?) gives our creatures vigilance and the ability to tap for any color, at least for creatures, while also giving us some occasional card draw. Relic of Legends lets us use any legendary creature as a dork, even when they first come into play, and the trifecta of Cryptolith Rite, Elven Chorus, and Enduring Vitality gives our creatures the ability to tap for mana of any color, without Inga and Esika's creature requirement! It's important that our mana from creatures comes with a tap ability, so these cards are all great for that.

With Legendary Power Comes Legendary Responsibility

Great is a thing of the past, we're now here to be legendary! Time for the big guns. To reflect Spider-Man's train-stopping strength, we've got a LOT of big creatures here. When determining if they made the cut, my thoughts were basically "hmm, this card is insanely good at three mana, let's include it". To start, we've got fellow Spidermen with Spider-Man, Miles Morales, and Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O'Hara. Both of them aren't too powerful on their own due to their cost, but at 3, they both become exceptionally strong!

Spider-Man, Miles Morales
The Tarrasque
Gandalf the White

Dinosaurs fit our requirement of large and in-charge, so we've got Ghalta and Mavren and The Tarrasque. Web-Slinging is an alternate cost to cast, so The Tarrasque gets to have haste and ward 10 for just three mana, so that's my personal favorite of the two here. Old Gnawbone and Dragonlord Dromoka are our large dragons that protect our spells and help us snowball into many more creatures. The Sixth Doctor and Gandalf the White give us some double value periodically and Absolute Virtue is just one big boy that decimates our opponents.

Aside from creatures, we've also got some non-creatures as well! Amazing Spider-Man gives web-slinging to ALL colored legendary spells, not just creatures, so we've got Parhelion II and The Magic Mirror for some artifact value and two legendary sorceries with Urza's Ruinous Blast and Karn's Temporal Sundering. Both of the legendary sorceries are great at three, with Blast being great when you're a little behind and don't mind losing your non-legendary non-lands, and Temporal Sundering is a card that will likely win you the game, if you've built up enough of a board. I'm never against extra turn cards, especially the ones that exile themselves, so that it's generally hard to loop them and combo out infinite turns. If you wanna do that, bump up to Bracket 4!

Hey, Can I Be Your Guy In The Chair?

Everyone needs a guy in the chair! Peter's got Ned, Kim's got Wade (if you know, you know), and we've got a whole support section in our list! Reki, the History of Kamigawa and Venat, Heart of Hydaelyn // Hydaelyn, the Mothercrystal give us cards when we cast our legendary spells, Helga, Skittish Seer and Up the Beanstalk give us cards when we cast bigger spells (even at the web-slinging cost!), and both Guardian Project and The Great Henge trigger when our creatures come into play. The Great Henge doubles as a Legendary spell, so if you're not already reduced down to gg, you can cast it for gwuinstead! The Seriema, Crystal Skull, Isu Spyglass, and Time of Need will help us find our legendary spells to cast, and Heroes' Podium will help find our cards and make our legends bigger!

Reki, the History of Kamigawa
Crystal Skull, Isu Spyglass
Three Visits

To round out, we've added some staple ramp with the three good, Green, 2-mana searchers: Farseek, Nature's Lore, and Three Visits. These, with Arcane Signet help you play Amazing Spider-Man on curve efficiently, so they're all good. In our lands, Swarmyard and Tyrite Sanctum have the added bonus of protecting our commander, Clive's Hideaway will be a relatively easy hideaway requirement to satisfy, and the Daily Bugle Building is both a flavor-win and helps our legends get into our opponent's life totals!

Let's talk Game Changers! Praetors have the added bonus of being large-costed legends, so Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur are included here (along with Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite!), and then we also have Teferi's Protection as another good support card. If you want to beef up this deck to higher brackets, Emiel the Blessed is a card you can add that combos with Derevi, Empyrial Tactician and a 3-mana tapping mana dork like Bloom Tender or Faeburrow Elder for infinite ETB triggers! With Guardian Project or the Great Henge out, you'll draw your deck! You can also beef that up and add Chromatic Orrery as well, for infinite mana, Derevi and Emiel have been a staple duo since they met, similar to Gwen and Peter (R.I.P. Gwen). Mox Amber, albeit a little pricier than the average addition, is a great card to speed up your games in decks that have lots of legends; this deck would use it well!

Here's the list, make Aunt May proud!
