Weekly Sale Commander: Warriors!

Reddit

Hi folks! Welcome to the Weekly Sale Column! This column will be aimed at showing you some cards on sale that could give you some new ideas for your lists. They will *usually* be Commander lists in Bracket 3 as well so you'll be able to play these in any Bracket 3 (or higher) pods. If you want to play in lower pods, just swap out the Game Changers for other choices and/or add more along with some other competitive combos if you want to compete with Bracket 4 and 5 pods! Keep in mind that the game changers in your deck aren't the only thing that moves you up and down a bracket. Your intent with your deck; inclusions of other interactions, engines, and combos, and overall playgroup should also be factors in your bracket! Remember that the weekly sale ends on Sunday night at 11:59 PM EST, so you have until then to get your cards ordered!

Najeela, the Blade-Blossom

This week's sale is the Wizards and Warriors, featuring, you guessed it, Wizards and Warriors! We're going to focus on the warrior-half here, with the Wizard side coming later this week! Leading our very aggressive charge is Najeela, the Blade-Blossom/Cloud Strife/Spider-Gwen, Web Warrior/Archaeon the Everchose/Eivor, Raven Clan Champion. Whichever universe you choose (I went with Cloud because I'm a sucker for FF7), we've got this absolutely delightful 3-mana 3/2 Human Warrior. It's important to note that although we only cost 2r, we're in 5-color because of our activated ability that lets us take extra combats, as long as we activate it in combat! Najeela also says that whenever a Warrior attacks (not just ours), we can have its controller create a 1/1 White Warrior creature token that's also tapped and attacking. Basically, as long as your opponents aren't attacking you with Warriors, you should let them have the token and let chaos ensue!

Every single creature (and I mean every single one) spell in our deck is a warrior, and none of them are wizards (sorry both Terra, Herald of Hope and Terra, Magical Adept, you won't make the cut this week), so we've got a nice Kindred Warrior deck! Let's get into it!

Cowards can't Block Warriors.

(Fun fact, Cowards can't block Warriors). So our deck is PACKED full of warriors, some who create tokens, some who pump our warriors, some who control our board and even one that just attacks of his own free will (Thanks, Ruhan/Sheldon). Warriors is an extremely broad creature type in Magic, and Najeela aims to take advantage of that by creating more by attacking!

Winota, Joiner of Forces
Gornog, the Red Reaper
Vexilus Praetor

Let's kick things off by thanking Gavin Verhey and the rest of the Commander Format Panel for bringing Winota, Joiner of Forces off of the Game Changer list! Winota will be great with all of the non-human warriors in our deck (which we play quite a bit) at bringing all the humans out! The sheer advantage Winota brings is wonderful for this deck, and we aim to enjoy it. Gornog, the Red Reaper makes our opponent's creatures into cowards (which can't block warriors, in case you didn't know). Vexilus Praetor makes our Commander a miniature Progenitus, and Noise Marine has my favorite keyword in Magic, Cascade!

The Meat

All right, that's enough of the silly ones, let's get to the meat of our deck. It's important to note that our deck curves out at five, so the most mana we'll spend on anything is five, if you include Najeela's ability and exclude Marneus Calgar's ability to make tokens. This makes us an all-out aggro deck! Bramblewood Paragon makes all of our warriors enter bigger, Chief of the Edge makes them slightly stronger, Brighthearth Banneret makes them cheaper, Rushblade Commander makes them faster, and Herald of Secret Streams gives them evasion that will make your opponents weep (when paired with Bramblewood Paragon). That's a lot of value!

Bramblewood Paragon
Zurgo Stormrender
Samut, Vizier of Naktamun

We've got a few drainers as well. Zurgo Stormrender will give us card draw if something is attacking, or ping 1 life from each opponent. Brutal Hordechief drains and gives you the life back from the defending player you take it from and Thrasher Brute just needs to see them enter play to drain!

Cards like Professional Face-Breaker and Samut, Vizier of Naktamun give us tons of advantage when damage is dealt, either through cards or treasures. Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar and Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist have some very unique utility that we want on our turns, and Grimgrin, Corpse-Born (yes, I just found out it's a Warrior) and Maarika, Brutal Gladiator (aka Zangief, the Red Cyclone) act as some very solid removal for us.

The Potatoes!

While we have lots of warriors, we also have lots of token generators and cards that give us value from that. Yes, not all of our tokens are warriors, but all of our creature spells are, so I'll allow it. Throne of the God-Pharaoh and Warleader's Call help our tokens push for lots of extra damage, and Annie Joins Up goes HARD with Najeela's triggers, giving us extra triggers for EACH warrior that attacks!

Throne of the God-Pharaoh
Ajani, Nacatl Pariah
Mardu Siegebreaker

Ajani, Nacatl Pariah is a planeswalker MDFC that makes 2-power warriors, Chatterfang gives us squirrels when we get warriors, and Goblin Rabblemaster + Krenko, Mob Boss give us so many goblins from their little warrior bodies. Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet helps manage our opponent's graveyards while giving us zombies, and Marneus Calgar, cEDH all-star, gives us card draw whenever tokens enter (last ability doesn't exist, we cap out at 5 on principle)!

Both of the Zurgos from TDM and it's Commander variant go well here, they both have mobilize and have token value for our creatures. Mardu Siegebreaker also gives us token value in the form of one of our own creatures, but over and over again! Jaxis, the Troublemaker also does that, and can do it safely by blitzing, if you've got the mana!

Change the Game!

We have four game changers in our deck! Luckily for us, only two of them are actually game changers, while the other two just got removed, making us firmly in bracket 3! Jeska's Will gives us lots of Red mana and card advantage, which helps considering that Red is our most active color in this deck. Fierce Guardianship gives us the protection we need as long as Najeela is out! We've already spoken about Winota, and our other pseudo-game-changer is Deflecting Swat! Swat is great for aggro decks so you can deflect away those pesky Swords to Plowshares aimed at your Najeela.

If you want to beef this deck up, it's super easy. Najeela is already played often in higher level brackets; you'll just want to add ways to make mana in combat! We've included none in this list, but cards like Druids' Repository and Bear Umbra can do exactly that for you! You can also add Derevi, Empyrial Tactician, but Derevi is a silly little wizard that can't party with warriors, so don't do that.

Here's the list! Cowards can't block Warriors, remember that. See you later this week for when the silly wizards take charge!
