Hi folks! Welcome to the Weekly Sale Column! This column will be aimed at showing you some cards on sale that could give you some new ideas for your lists. They will *usually* be Commander lists in Bracket 3 as well so you'll be able to play these in any Bracket 3 (or higher) pods. If you want to play in lower pods, just swap out the Game Changers for other choices and/or add more along with some other competitive combos if you want to compete with Bracket 4 and 5 pods! Keep in mind that the game changers in your deck aren't the only thing that moves you up and down a bracket. Your intent with your deck; inclusions of other interactions, engines, and combos, and overall playgroup should also be factors in your bracket! Remember that the weekly sale ends on Sunday night at 11:59 PM EST, so you have until then to get your cards ordered!
Welcome to... Jurassic Pa.. sorry, wrong one. Welcome to the Jurassic Sale! This sale features a few cool looking lizards, the best birds in the Final Fantasy universe, and Dinosaurs! Dinosaurs were probably closer to birds than lizards back then, but that's a conversation for another day, we're just focusing on the clear cut, savage Dinosaurs today!
Here's today's soundtrack for this list, open it if you're cool! Fun fact, my groomsmen and I walked down the aisle at my wedding to an instrumental version of this; it's safe to say I'm quite a fan!
Life Finds a Way
Our list does something a little special compared to our others. We've got 101 cards! This is made possible by one lovely little non-Dino named Kaheera, the Orphanguard! Kaheera is our Companion for this list, which means that all of our creatures are either Dinosaurs or 4 other creature types that we don't care about! Leading this stampede with a cat by its side is Gishath, Sun's Avatar. Gishath is a 7/6 Dinosaur Avatar (not to be confused with Aang) with Vigilance, Trample, Haste, and a delightful trigger that happens when Gishath connects with a player! You'll get to reveal cards from your deck for the amount of damage dealt and put into play any number of Dinosaurs you find! Trample and Haste on Gishath make this easy to trigger, and our whopping 41-creature count makes hitting on this trigger basically guaranteed!
While not playing Kaheera would probably be more efficient because we'd get to play a few other Dinosaur enablers, the purity of Kaheera's restriction makes this a much more fun deck to play, in my opinion. If you don't want the restriction, feel free to cut it and then you can add some of the cards that are great with Dinosaurs, like Huatli, Poet of Unity, Knight of the Stampede, Otepec Huntmaster, Kinjalli's Caller, and Ixalli's Lorekeeper!
Hold on to your butts!
To kick things off, we've got lots of great utility dinosaurs, some that ramp, some that remove, some that draw, and some that copy! Ripjaw Raptor, probably one of the most popular dinosaurs, draws a card whenever enrage triggers. Enrage is a common dinosaur-themed mechanic that triggers whenever the creature is dealt damage, and many dinosaurs either fight or have no problem being blocked, so enrage is a perfect mechanic for them. Ranging Raptors is our enraged ramping dinosaur, getting to rampant growth on each enrage trigger. Tranquil Frillback and Scion of Calamity are both good at hitting artifacts and enchantments, the former also being good against graveyards. Deathgorge Scavenger is also great against graveyards, while also being repeatable on attacks. Kinjali's Sunwing and Rampaging Ferocidon help us feel like a bit of a Stax deck, and Marauding Raptor/Hunting Velociraptor give us some discounts on our dinosaurs!
Polyraptor has one of the scariest enrage abilities, creating a copy of it whenever it enrages. I'm opting to play it alongside Marauding Raptor, however, tread carefully if you choose to do so, as playing Polyraptor with Marauding Raptor in play will cause the game to end in a draw, so having extra removal ready helps in making sure you don't lose your army of Polyraptors. Instant-speed is mandatory here, so we play cards like Khalni Ambush, Path to Exile, and Swords to Plowshares to give us what we need to stop the cycle.
But your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should!
Alongside our utility dinos, we also have the big ones! Zacama, Primal Calamity has a whole host of activated abilities that have use, but if you manage to cast Zacama, then you also get to untap all of your lands! Apex Altisaur has acted as a Plague Wind more than one time in my experience, and here is no different. Vaultborn Tyrant has some great card draw utility attached to it, while also not being easy to get rid of. If you're a cEDH enjoyer like myself, you're no stranger to Etali, Primal Conqueror // Etali, Primal Sickness! This chunky boy flips cards from the top of each deck until you hit a spell and lets you cast all of them! You can also transform Etali into its compleated version, Etali, Primal Sickness for a one-shot dinosaur on a defenseless player! Ravenous Tyrannosaurus has Devour 3, which means it doesn't take much for it to enter as a giant. When it attacks, it tramples one creature for its power, so that creature's controller takes the excess.
Ghalta also appears here in all 3 forms: Ghalta, Primal Hunger, Ghalta and Mavren, and Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant! Ghalta, Primal Hunger, originally Etali's Green counterpart from Rivals of Ixalan, is just a big 12/12 with trample, but cheaper based on your board. Ghalta and Mavren, a certain vampire planeswalker's best friend, can create a big Dino token or a bunch of vampire tokens when it attacks. Finally, Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant is probably the best thing you can hit on the Gishath trigger, letting you dump your hand into play when it enters.
We Spared No Expense
John Hammond spent everything he could on Jurassic Park, and we're doing the same, in terms of mana. Dinosaurs are expensive, and we need as much ramp as possible. We've got the usual Farseek, Nature's Lore, Three Visits, and Skyshroud Claim that I put in most Green decks, but we've also got few extra with Explore and Cultivate to help push us over that edge of needing mana. Cards like Welcome To... // Jurassic Park and Growing Rites of Itlimoc // Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun give us ramp for each creature we have in play, and cards like Eldritch Evolution and Savage Order help us cheat some of the bigger stuff in play faster! The Aetherspark is a spicy addition that is really easy to get to the 3rd ability because most of our creatures are stat-efficient dinosaurs. That 3rd ability gives us tons of mana to go hard on the dinosaurs in our hand, so it earned the spot well here.
We've also got 3 ramp-relevant game changes here! Mana Vault is one of the best mana rocks in the game, and it not untapping after we use it doesn't bother us because we're gonna use it to cast Gishath anyways! Smothering Tithe gets out of hand very quickly, and we're hoping to play it as soon as we can so we can start generating treasures right away. Finally, Jeska's Will has the potential to make you upward of 7 mana on your turn (assuming an opponent has a full grip without any maximum hand size shenanigans) and can also act as some insane card draw as well if you have Gishath in play!
Here's the list, make John Hammond proud!
