The Actual Best Commons & Uncommons in Limited for Magic's Lorwyn Eclipsed

Reddit

With Magic: The Gathering's Lorwyn Eclipsed being draftable on Arena for about a week at time of writing, we have enough data to look at what the best non-rare cards in the set turned out to be.

However, there is one little caveat I'd like to discuss before we dive in. The true best uncommons in the set, based on win-rate, are all gold cards. As you read this list, be aware that most of the Eclipsed cards are better than everything you see here and many of the gold signposts are, too. This is a set that rewards you for finding the right lane early in the draft and pays you off with some of the best cards in the set if you succeed.

White

Wanderbrine Trapper

Wanderbrine Trapper

Getting on-board early and being assertive is important in this set. Wanderbrine Trapper does both of those things, coming into play as early as you possible, attacking for two, and providing value later on.

Liminal Hold

In my original predictions article I was kind of close to the truth, I just picked the wrong enchantment-based removal. Turns out the blight cost on Spiral into Solitude is mostly downside in White and Pacifism on its own is not that good in a world of creatures with activated and triggered abilities.

Blue

Rimekin Recluse

Rimekin Recluse

Man-o'-War with an extra point of power is good in Limited? Shocking news. I think I was too busy trying to find an interesting answer and overlooked the obvious one in my previous article. This goes in every Blue deck, regardless of type, and you should pick it very highly.

Unexpected Assistance

Unexpected Assistance

All right, here's one I got exactly right, though only just. Yes, instant speed card draw with a built-in mana discount is very good. The only real surprise here is that Gravelgill Scoundrel is a mere 0.1% win rate behind it. You're probably already picking Assistance highly, but you shouldn't overlook the Scoundrel.

Black

Creakwood Safewright

I never even considered this one, if I'm being honest. The format shaped up a lot more aggressively than I was expecting, and this being a two-mana 5/5 for minimal work is a huge deal. You will struggle to have an elf deck that can't easily trigger this. Although it will take a while to reach its final form, it will still be a reasonable creature at every step of the journey.

Dawnhand Eulogist

Dawnhand Eulogist

The best common in the set, on-par with most of the best uncommons. It's almost impossible to have too many of this card, though you do need to be aware of the cards left in your library at some point. It's a surprisingly good attacker that also helps you to stabilize against aggressive starts from kitkin, what's not to love?

Red

Flamebraider

Flamebraider

Two mana in any combination colours is a lot. This is the card that really enables vivid and elemental decks, and the overlap there is considerable. All of the decks in that rug-ish area are improved massively by having this card in play on turn two and it's no surprise that the braidy bunch gain a whopping 4% win-rate when you switch to "in opening hand."

Kulrath Zealot

Kulrath Zealot

I was surprised to see this card here, but when you consider it in the context of Flamebraider, it makes a lot of sense. Casting this on turn four or five, when it's probably the biggest thing on the board and draws you a card is huge. It's also in the color that arguably wants to landcycle the most, so it's even good when you're not casting it.

Green

Morcant's Eyes

Morcant's Eyes

So, yeah, this card is bonkers. It fixes your draws early on, it puts the game out of reach later and if you get really desperate, it can make a few blockers to keep you alive in between times. I'm only surprised its win rate isn't even higher than the 61% it's currently showing on 17lands.

Mistmeadow Council

Mistmeadow Council

Another one I got right. I've cast this card a lot and it's nice to see that the data supports my own findings: that this card is excellent. Kithkin is a very aggressive archetype, the type that can stall out and lose if it runs out of momentum. Council keeps the cards flowing, provides a big body and triggers all your typal pay-offs if it's in the right deck. It's not bad in other Green decks, but it's a lot better when you're casting it for four mana and triggering Thoughtweft Lieutenant.

Does the data match up with your experience? What are your picks for the best Commons and Uncommons in Lorwyn Eclipsed?
