By the Numbers: the Best Commons and Uncommons of Tarkir: Dragonstorm

Reddit

Normally, when I write these best limited cards articles, they're pretty straightforward. The cards than win the most are usually so good that it doesn't matter that much when you draw them. There are a few exceptions to this, like Sinkhole Surveyor, but generally the top five cards don't move around all that much, regardless of which filter you use on 17lands.

When it comes to commons and uncommons in Tarkir Dragonstorm, however, things get tricky. Sonic Shrieker wins the most when you sort by "win rate in hand (opener or drawn)" but it drops down to fourth place when we switch to "in opening hand." Weirdly, when we switch to "drawn turn 1 or later," Shrieker is only second, behind Karakyk Guardian.

In the end, I decided to go for the best non-rare cards sorted by win rate in opening hand or when drawn, since it presents the best of both worlds.

5. Traveling Botanist & Twinmaw Stormbrood

Traveling Botanist
Twinmaw Stormbrood

We have two cards tied on 58.8% win rate as I write this article. Although they don't quite go in the same deck, these cards both go into decks that are trying to bridge into the late game. They do it in quite different ways, though. Botanist is great at accelerating Temur decks into their late game bombs while Stormbrood is a removal spell and a creature that stabilizes the game later on. Both of them are fine in other decks, but excel in Temur and Jeskai respectively.

4. Rally the Monastery, Mardu Monument & Roiling Dragonstorm

Mardu Monument
Roiling Dragonstorm

I told you this article would get weird. We go from a two-way tie to a three-way tie, just 0.01% above the previous pair. Here we have a card that goes in two decks but is really at its best in Jeskai, one card that only goes in one deck, and finally a great all-rounder. Rally the Monastery is fine in most white decks, but is at a premium in Jeskai decks that are good at reducing its cost while making the best use of the most modes. Mardu Monument speaks for itself. It's the best in class for this cycle because it fits Mardu's game plan very well. Roiling Dragonstorm, meanwhile, is a key part of five-color decks, while still being pretty good in more "normal" decks, too.

3. Sibsig Appraiser

Sibsig Appraiser

We're done with the ties. Sibsig Appraiser is the only common on this list, but what a common! It might surprise you to know that this card is best when paired with red cards, but it has a respectable win rate across the board. Mini Organ Hoarder dips into a lot of buckets, getting on-board early-ish against the aggressive decks, helping you set-up for mid-to-late game against everybody else and even puts things into the graveyard if you're into that. It looks so unobtrusive at face value, but this is really the glue that holds a lot of blue decks together.

2. Karakyk Guardian

Karakyk Guardian

If there was any doubt as to what this set is about, this card being (arguably) the second best non-rare in the set says it loud and clear. Two huge dragons (spoiler alert!) sitting atop this list just feels right somehow. This one in particular passes The Groan Test (TM) with flying colors, because once it resolves it feels nigh-impossible to beat. Hexproof is a hell of a mechanic, even if it is temporary. Then again, with all the other words in the text box of this 6/5 flier, it's only temporary in the sense that the game will end very soon.

1. Sonic Shrieker

Sonic Shrieker

I have to admit, this one caught me by surprise. Personally, I have had most success with straight Boros decks, but if you're going to splash something, it might as well be a five-mana bomb. It probably helps that everybody has figured out how good Mardu Devotee is, so casting this card is pretty straightforward by turn five. Shrieker packs a punch - or, more accurately, it packs a couple of different punches. This is basically Kolaghan's Command attached to a 4/4 flier, and that card was a multi-format all-star once upon a time.
