We've had Magic in space for a while now, and the Limited format has started to take shape. A handful of cards have emerged from the mess of data to declare themselves as the top dogs - or top space bugs, or whatever. Here are five of the best rares and mythics in Edge of Eternities Limited, counting down from fifth to first, starting with...
Cosmogrand Zenith - 63.1%
Now that we have had Flurry as a mechanic in several sets, one way or another, we know there are a couple of ways for "second spell" cards to be good. The first and most obvious way this kind of card can be good is if the cheap spells are good enough and plentiful enough to trigger flurry multiple times in a game. The other option is that even if you only trigger the ability once, it has such a powerful effect that the card is worth playing. You could argue that Zenith falls into a third category: both. It doesn't take much work to trigger this card on the turn you cast it, and it comes down early enough that you can get multiple uses out of the ability. But also, the ability is excellent, so even if this creature dies after triggering just once, it still probably affected the board in a meaningful way.
Genemorph Imago - 62.4%
This unassuming little bug person is apparently exactly the kind of thing Simic decks want to be doing in this format. A 1/3 flier for 2 is passable, not great. Landfall making a 3/3 for the turn is decent, especially in a format where you can do it multiple times per turn. Making multiple 6/6 attackers (or blockers, in a pinch) is a surefire way to end a game. The fact that this card asks so little of you is what really makes it great. It has to eat a removal spell or it will eventually take over the game on its own. It can also lead to some very cool combo finishes, if you have the mana to crack a bunch of lander tokens at once.
Elegy Acolyte - 66.0%
So, we're starting a with a 4/4 lifelink creature for four. That would already be a solid lower rarity card. Each additional sentence after that gets progressively better. So we're drawing cards when we hit our opponent? Great. Oh, and then we get to start throwing 2/2s around like candy? It's easy to see why this card has such a high win rate: it does everything you can ask for in a four-drop and then some.
Ouroboroid - 66.0%
So, the best Green card in the set is - checking the notes here - a 1/3 for four?! All right, yeah, this gets out of hand extremely quickly. Just pumping your team by +1/+1 every turn is an okay starting point, but if you can buff the Plant Wurm itself, you're going to have an overwhelming board presence in no time. This starts as a somewhat over-costed anthem, but with the benefit of turning on your +1/+1 counter synergies. It escalates quickly from there into an unassailable power and toughness-generating machine - while still triggering those same synergies. Importantly, those synergies are working out, with both Simic and Selesnya being among the most successful colour pairs in the format. In other words, Ouroboroid is a powerful rare in a colour that is already doing very well to begin with.
Quantum Riddler - 66.3%
A huge flier that draws a card when it enters play? Sure, that's rarely a bad effect but it's on commons these days. Sometimes doubling your draw-step, though? Apparently, that's enough to push this card into the stratosphere of A+ rated cards on 17lands. Oh, and I guess it cantrips early on, if you need it. A lot of the cards on this list seem to be here based on the combined merits of a multitude of factors rather than overwhelming power level. Riddler is similar: flexible, not egregiously powerful, but the fact that all of this is attached to a four-power flier makes it a contender for best rare in the set. Indeed, as I came to edit this article, it is now the most performant card in EOE Limited.
Honourable Mention - Celestial Colonnade
I'm just throwing this one out here because it's wild to me. This was the best card in its cycle when it was in Standard, but I would never have imagined it was a top-ten card in a modern day Limited format.
