10 for 10: Miles ?Tails? Prower

Reddit

I was today years old when I realised that Miles "Tails" Prower is a play on words for the term miles per hour. This profoundly messed with me and I was unable to deal with the fact that I had not been able to put this together before.

The character Tails began his career as a video game icon in 1992 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Acting as Sonic's first sidekick, he grew into a popular character in his own right. While Sonic could move faster and jump higher, Tails added the ability to fly into the game. By spinning his two tails like helicopter blades he would soar over obstacles and enemies. As the Sonic series continued, Tails became the chief mechanic of the growing roster. He would fly a plane called The Tornado and pilot mechs to battle the sinister Dr. Eggman.

Miles

The Magic card Tails does a great job representing his lore through his mechanics. Giving Tails flash is reminiscent of the speed in which the Sonic franchise revolves around and him having flying is an easy no brainer. His third effect is indicative of Tails' mechanical genius, gaining card advantage as vehicles with flying enter, and tinkering with vehicles that don't fly. With 3 power he also easily crews most vehicles with no need for a boost. Let's take a quick look at 10 cards that you could consider for your Tails Commander Deck!

1. Smuggler's Copter

Smuggler's Copter

Smuggler's Copter is basically an auto include in any vehicle deck. The "looter scooter" does double work for us. It comes down on turn 2 for early card selection and if we have Tails in play, it will draw us a card upon entering the battlefield. With Tails in the pilot seat we'll be generating crazy value in no time!

2. Tempered Steel

Tempered Steel

Tempered Steel is another easy card to include. When we crew our vehicles, they will become Artifact Creatures gaining the beneficial buff from this often overlooked enchantment. Tempered Steel will likely make most of our creatures better. Imagine an Esper Sentinel costing our opponents 3 extra mana on their first noncreature spell.

3. Parhelion II

Parhelion II

Parhelion II is just an absolute monster of a card. Once it's attacked once it supplies itself with angels that can pilot it. Its keywords are phenomenal, giving it the ability to go to battle and play defense on our own turn. With Tails in play it will draw us a card too! If you're building a White vehicle deck, please include Parhelion II.

4. Organic Extinction

Organic Extinction

One-sided board wipes are always pretty nice. While Tails won't survive this extinction event, we can use him to crew a nice beefy vehicle and then blow up the board leaving us an opportunity to drive over our opponents. Having the improvise ability gives us an alternate casting cost allowing us to conserve valuable mana for rebuilding our board after an Organic Extinction.

5. Cid, Freeflier Pilot

Cid, Freeflier Pilot

Cid, Freeflier Pilot gives us a plethora of abilities stacked on one creature. Cid would be great with just his Etherium Sculptor ability, but he also has a 2 mana activated ability that lets us return a vehicle or equipment to our hand from the graveyard. We already have one pilot in Tails, so why not include another!

6. Emry, Lurker of the Loch

Emry, Lurker of the Loch

Emry, Lurker of the Loch will let us double down on the graveyard recursion. She also fills the yard for us to have artifacts to bring back. Commander being a singleton format doesn't mean that we can't have redundant effects in our deck!

7. Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage

Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage

What if everyone's turn was our turn? Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage lets that happen! Raff lets us cast our historic spells at flash speed, and in a vehicle themed deck we're going to have a lot of artifacts. Giving us this beneficial boon on a 3/3 body allows us to also crew most vehicles, too. What a guy!

8. Armed and Armored

Armed and Armored

Armed and Armored is a wild card to include in our deck. It can be used for an alpha strike or it can be used to defend us if we're on the receiving end of an alpha strike. This 2 mana instant must be included in any and all vehicle builds.

9. Dance of the Manse

Dance of the Manse

Dance of the Manse is a wonderful recursion piece for our deck. If we happen to be on the receiving end of a board wipe like Austere Command, we can easily invest our mana bringing our garage of vehicles back from the brink!

10. Simulacrum Synthesizer

Simulacrum Synthesizer

Simulacrum Synthesizer gives us what this deck sorely needs. Pilots for our vehicles. As we cast more vehicles we get to generate more constructs. As we generate more constructs they become bigger and bigger until they can crew any vehicle we can offer. Given that most of our artifacts will cost 3 mana or more, we're almost guaranteed to create every time an artifact comes down.

The mechanical genius Tails is going to tinker with all of our vehicles and make them better. As we fly over our opponents we'll crash in for a victory! What cards did I miss? What would you include in your Tails list? Thanks for reading!
