Hands down, my favorite Spider-Man story is called "The Superior Spider-Man." Written by Dan Slott and brought to life by the artistic talents of Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Camuncoli, we see a dying Dr. Otto Octavius use his technology to swap bodies with Peter Parker. After watching his body die, with Peter's mind inside, Otto vows to protect New York City as the new Superior Spider-Man.
Needless to say, I geeked out super hard when I read the text on Superior Spider-Man. The flavor is peak and I knew I wanted to start brewing a deck right away! Superior Spider-Man enters the battlefield as a copy of any creature in a graveyard, except it keeps the name Superior Spider-Man and stays a Spider Human Hero with a 4/4 stat line. If we copy a creature this way that creature is exiled from the graveyard. It's important to note that the card does not say "your graveyard," so we can even copy our opponents creatures too!
Since we can only control our deck, let's look at 10 creatures that we can play in the 99 for Superior Spider-Man to transform into! Just a heads up, we'll be skipping Game Changers for this list.
Honorable Mentions
Stitcher's Supplier
In any deck that wants to take advantage of creatures in the graveyard, Stitcher's Supplier is an easy auto-include. The reliable mill will consistently fill our yards with ample creatures for Superior Spider-Man to copy. In a pinch we can even copy the Supplier to sneak in some extra mill.
Hedron Crab
Another creature that is known for consistent mill is Hedron Crab. Unlike Stitcher's Supplier, this crab gives us the option to mill our opponents if need be. If we are regularly making our land drops, then we are regularly fueling our options for Superior Spider-Man's Mind Swap ability!
1. Baleful Strix
Baleful Strix is a simple, yet powerful card. For two mana, we get a 1/1 flying deathtouch creature that replaces itself in our hand. The deathtouch, more often than not, trades up or prohibits our opponents from attacking us. If copied by Superior Spider-Man, we get those benefits again, except on a 4/4 body. Opponents are less likely to block a larger creature with deathtouch unless they can chump, so we'll likely connect frequently with our commander and score some valuable damage.
2. Pollywog Prodigy
Pollywog Prodigy is an awesome tool from Bloomburrow Commander. Card advantage on a creature that gets bigger and bigger never loses relevance. As long as there are consistent creatures entering to trigger Evolve, we'll get value from every mana rock, ritual and removal spell. In the mid to late game, if we need cards, the prodigy is the perfect target for Superior Spider-Man. At 4 power we're almost guaranteed a card draw as our opponents double and triple spell.
3. Psychic Frog
Psychic Frog is a multiformat all-star. It's so good in fact, that it was banned in Legacy! This little guy does everything we want on its own and as a target for Superior Spider-Man. We get to draw cards when dealing damage, we get to discard our better targets for our commander to copy and we can give temporary evasion to ensure we deal damage. The frog is awesome and I wouldn't be surprised if it saw a home in every list.
4. Massacre Wurm
I love having utility on creatures. Massacre Wurm is a board wipe and punishment rolled up in the same card, and it only makes sense to double down on such a powerful effect by copying it with Superior Spider-Man. Shout out to Massacre Girl to act as a second option for board wipes. Between the Girl and the Wurm, we may not even have to play cards like Damnation in our deck at all.
5. Blighted Agent
I don't really think I have to explain how bonkers Superior Spider-Man and Blighted Agent are. An unblockable 4/4 with infect can knock out a problem player in just a few turns. This combo is so great, we may even become the archenemy way too soon!
6. Symbiote Spider-Man
Symbiote gives us another great card selection ability. We get to look at cards equal to the damage we've dealt, pick one and put the rest in the yard. While we'll rarely ever use the second ability, having Superior Spider-Man become a copy of the Symbiote will give us an exceptional view of multitudes of cards in our deck.
7. Puppeteer Clique
Puppeteer Clique gives us incredible value. On its own, we get to resurrect the best creature in our opponent's graveyard. With the persist trigger we get to do this twice. If we copy the clique with Superior Spider-Man we get to resurrect something, and then when it dies, we get another persist trigger and Superior Spider-Man will get to do his copy ability again! No returning to the Command Zone for us!
8. Noxious Gearhulk
Just like with Massacre Wurm, Noxious Gearhulk is utility on a creature, and doubling down on utility creatures is what Superior Spider-Man shines at. With the gearhulk in the yard, we always have a single target removal spell in the Command Zone.
9. Sepulchral Primordial
Sepulchral Primordial is a pet card that I slot into almost every Black deck I build. Resurrecting our opponents' best creatures can be a huge tempo swing in our favor. The fact that we can use Superior Spider-Man to get this effect twice causes the necromancer in me to giggle with glee.
10. Rune-Scarred Demon
I typically don't play tutors in my commander decks, but Rune-Scarred Demon is too good to pass up. This classic creature has been a staple in Black decks for as long as I can remember. Just like every other creature in this list, getting to double down on the demon is more than enough to earn him a spot in your Superior Spider-Man build.
The build potential for Superior Spider-Man is immense. Having our commander be a functional copy of all of our creatures makes so many strategies possible. Mill, clones and even reanimator are all viable options. How would you put together this devious Dimir doctor? Thanks for reading!
