Hello everyone! With previews for Lorwyn Eclipsed happening this week, I'm continuing my look into decks that you can use during the first few weeks of our new Standard environment. Each week I've been focusing on decks featuring a specific color. I've already looked at Blue and Black decks, and this week I'm looking at decks featuring Red mana. Let's get started.
Mono-Red Burn
I always start off with a mono-colored deck and this Mono-Red burn deck looks pretty sweet, so let's take a look at it.
Mono-Red Burn | TLA Standard | JP695, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (25)
- 3 Emberheart Challenger
- 3 Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might
- 3 Scalding Viper
- 4 Hired Claw
- 4 Nova Hellkite
- 4 Slickshot Show-Off
- 4 Razorkin Needlehead
- Instants (13)
- 2 Shock
- 3 Full Bore
- 4 Burst Lightning
- 4 Lightning Strike
- Lands (22)
- 22 Mountain
For a burn deck, you might be thinking that this has a large number of creatures and a small number of burn spells. That would be true normally if it wasn't for the fact that Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might is one of the creatures in this deck. While Ojer Axonil is in play, any source of noncombat damage you would deal will deal a minimum amount of damage equal to Ojer Axonil's power.
That noncombat damage isn't limited to just burn spells. Whenever Hired Claw attacks, it deals noncombat damage to your opponent. While Scalding Viper is in play, it will deal noncombat damage to your opponent whenever they cast a spall with mana value 3 or less. Razorkin Needlehead deals noncombat damage to your opponent whenever they draw a card. This damage, plus the damage you'll deal with your usual burn spells should be enough to finish off your opponent with ease.
Budget Boros Equipment
Next, I have a Boros equipment deck that won't break the bank. Let's take a look at the deck.
Budget Boros Equipment | TLA Standard | HelloGoodGame, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (15)
- 2 Barret Wallace
- 3 Freya Crescent
- 3 Giott, King of the Dwarves
- 3 Zack Fair
- 4 Adelbert Steiner
- Instants (4)
- 4 Burst Lightning
- Enchantments (2)
- 2 Blacksmith's Talent
- Artifacts (19)
- 2 Twin Blades
- 3 Paladin's Arms
- 3 Samurai's Katana
- 4 Dragoon's Lance
- 4 Red Mage's Rapier
- 3 Swiftfoot Boots
- Lands (20)
- 8 Mountain
- 8 Plains
- 4 Raucous Carnival
With 19 Equipment in this deck, Adelbert Steiner is a no-brainer to include. Not only will this Human Knight become ridiculously large due to the +1/+1 bonus they get for each Equipment you control, but they also have lifelink. That means each time you attack with Adelbert, your opponent gets farther and farther from defeating you.
Barret Wallace is another creature that is a key player for this deck. Whenever Barret attacks, he will deal damage to your opponent equal to the number of equipped creatures you control. That extra damage can be enough to defeat your opponent whether or not you actually connect with Barret's attack.
Izzet Frostcliff Goblins
The next deck I have wants to quickly overwhelm your opponent with Goblins. Let's check it out.
Izzet Frostcliff Goblins | TLA Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (28)
- 2 Draconautics Engineer
- 2 Greasewrench Goblin
- 4 Burnout Bashtronaut
- 4 Fanatical Firebrand
- 4 Howlsquad Heavy
- 4 Krenko, Mob Boss
- 4 Searslicer Goblin
- 4 Stadium Headliner
- Instants (4)
- 2 Burst Lightning
- 2 Into the Flood Maw
- Enchantments (3)
- 3 Frostcliff Siege
- Artifacts (2)
- 2 Agatha's Soul Cauldron
The goal of this deck is to get as many Goblins into play as possible early on. Then, once you're able to, you cast Krenko, Mob Boss. Krenko has an activated ability you can use to create additional Goblin creature tokens. The key is to be able to give Krenko and your other Goblins haste, so you can quickly outnumber and overwhelm your opponent's defenses.
You can gain haste for your creatures a couple of different ways. Having Howlsquad Heavy in play gives all other Goblins you control haste, plus you might eventually be able to reach max speed and tap for extra Red mana. There's also Frostcliff Siege. If you choose the Temur option, your creatures will get a +1/+0 bonus, haste, and trample. Trample makes it easier for you to defeat your opponent, even if they have creatures that can block.
Rakdos Punishment
The next deck I have for you features various ways to punish your opponent for playing spells. Let's take a look at the deck.
Rakdos Punishment | TLA Standard | JayVillain, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (19)
- 3 Demon Wall
- 3 Magebane Lizard
- 3 Mai, Scornful Striker
- 3 Razorkin Needlehead
- 3 Scrawling Crawler
- 4 Bloodletter of Aclazotz
- Instants (3)
- 3 Stab
- Sorceries (10)
- 3 Day of Black Sun
- 3 Tragic Trajectory
- 4 Strategic Betrayal
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Unholy Annex // Ritual Chamber
- Lands (24)
- 6 Mountain
- 10 Swamp
- 2 Multiversal Passage
- 2 Starting Town
- 4 Blazemire Verge
- Sideboard (6)
- 1 Rot-Curse Rakshasa
- 1 Abrade
- 1 Bitter Triumph
- 1 Nowhere to Run
- 2 Insatiable Avarice
Black decks have access to some of the best creature destruction spells around. If your opponent casts a creature spell, this deck has multiple ways of dealing with it. However, this deck excels at punishing your opponent for playing noncreature spells. Both Mai, Scornful Striker and Magebane Lizard deal damage to either player when they play a noncreature spell. The plan is to be able to deal more damage to your opponent than the amount you'll take if you need to cast a noncreature spell.
Bloodletter of Aclazotz can help an awful lot with this plan. While this Vampire Demon is on the battlefield, if an opponent would lose life during your turn, they'll lose twice as much life instead. Since you can offset a bit of the life you might lose during a game with Unholy Annex, you've got a leg up on your opponent.
Gruul Fire and Earth
The final deck I have for you this week uses a combination of both mana ramping and Firebending to dominate its opponent. Let's take a look at the deck.
Gruul Fire and Earth | TLA Standard | JayVillain, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (28)
- 2 Roxanne, Starfall Savant
- 2 Savage Ventmaw
- 3 Anzrag, the Quake-Mole
- 3 Firebending Student
- 3 Halana and Alena, Partners
- 3 Spider Manifestation
- 4 Badgermole Cub
- 4 Llanowar Elves
- 4 Ruby, Daring Tracker
- Instants (3)
- 3 The Last Agni Kai
- Enchantments (6)
- 3 Fated Firepower
- 3 Firebender Ascension
- Lands (24)
- 6 Forest
- 7 Mountain
- 1 Ba Sing Se
- 1 Fire Nation Palace
- 1 Restless Ridgeline
- 4 Stomping Ground
- 4 Thornspire Verge
- Sideboard (7)
- 1 Callous Sell-Sword
- 1 Abrade
- 1 Burst Lightning
- 1 Dreadmaw's Ire
- 1 Overprotect
- 1 Become Brutes
- 1 Synchronized Charge
This deck wants to be able to generate a lot of mana in one turn. To do this, you can use the mana abilities of creatures like Llanowar Elves, Ruby, Daring Tracker, and Spider Manifestation in conjunction with Badgermole Cub. This will allow you to cast Fated Firepower with a high value for X.
By doing this, when you attack, your creatures will deal a massive amount of damage. If you're able to avoid being blocked, that damage will go directly to your opponent's life total, and you can quickly win the game.
Wrapping Up
As a huge fan of Red-based decks, I cannot wait to try these out. Each of them plays differently from the others, but all of them seem powerful to me.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
