Five Red Decks for Dragonstorm Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. This week I'm looking at my second batch of decks that you can try out at a Standard event near you that are all focused around a specific color. Last week I looked at some Black-based decks, so that means I'll be looking at some Red-based decks this week. Red is my favorite color to play, so let's get started.

Mono-Red Goblins

I always like to start off with a mono-colored deck. This time, it features Goblins. Let's take a look at the deck.

Krenko, Mob Boss
Rundvelt Hordemaster
Patchwork Banner

This deck is all about overloading your opponent's defenses quickly. It's very easy to go wide with this deck, as there are a lot of ways to create 1/1 Goblin creature tokens. These methods include Searslicer Goblin, Howlsquad Heavy, and Krenko, Mob Boss. While these 1/1 tokens might not be able to take out larger blockers, your opponent might choose not to block them in favor of blocking other bigger creatures.

But, those puny 1/1 creature tokens don't have to remain small. Both Rundvelt Hordemaster and Dropkick Bomber provide a +1/+1 bonus to other Goblins you control. Plus, there's also Patchwork Banner that can pump up your Goblins as well. Power up your puny pummelers and pound your opponent into pulp.

Gruul Double Strike

Next, I have a deck for you that can deal a lot of damage thanks to double strike. Let's take a look at the deck.

If you've played any amount of Standard over the past six months, you've likely encountered Manifold Mouse. This unassuming Mouse Soldier (and its offspring) allows you to give a Mouse you control either double strike or trample for the remainder of the turn. This can turn even the tiniest creature into a massive threat, especially when you account for all of the pump spells within this deck.

Spells like Wild Ride, Fanatical Strength, and Monstrous Rage can all be used to help trigger the ability of Picnic Ruiner, which will give this Goblin Rogue double strike for the turn. Pump up your creatures and turn them sideways, attacking for a ton of damage. If you happen to play Crash Through prior to attacking, you'll be able to give trample to all of your creatures, which can help you punch through defending creatures while still dealing damage to your opponent.

Boros Siege Aggro

The next deck I have for you that can utilize triggered abilities additional times. Let's take a look at the deck.

Windcrag Siege

Windcrag Siege is an enchantment you'll want to play early on when you play this deck. Doing so will require you to choose either Mardu or Jeskai, and you'll want to choose Mardu when you're playing this deck. This will provide you with an additional use of any triggered abilities that happen as the result of a creature attacking.

Every creature in this deck has an activated ability that triggers when your creatures attack. Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon gains +1/+1 counters and creates 1/1 Gnome artifact creature tokens. Arabella, Abandoned Doll deals damage to your opponent and gains you life when she attacks. Even the mobilize abilities of Stadium Headliner and Voice of Victory will trigger twice, resulting in a bunch of 1/1 Warrior creatures that are tapped and attacking. This deck is all about synergy and aggression.

Izzet Land Destruction

While land destruction has been toned down quite a bit over the years, this deck has a couple of ways to do it that your opponent will find quite annoying. Let's check it out.

Magmatic Hellkite

When Magic was young, land destruction was much more common than it is now. There were even decks built around destroying your opponents lands again and again, so that they wouldn't have any mana to use to counter your threats. But then Wizards of the Coast realized that too much of a good thing (land destruction) can be a bad thing, so it got toned down quite a bit.

This deck is a control deck at heart, with a couple of ways to destroy some of your opponent's lands. When Magmatic Hellkite comes into play, you can destroy an opponent's nonbasic land. They'll get to search for a basic land to replace it, but that's okay. It's likely to be half the land it once was. You can also play Territory Forge, exiling a land (or artifact) when it enters play. From that point on, Territory Forge will have all of the activated abilities the exiled card had. Control your opponent's resources and you can control the game.

Rakdos Steal and Sacrifice

The final deck I have for you this week wants to take your opponent's best creatures, using them, and then sacrificing them so they don't return to your opponent at the end of the turn. Let's take a look at the deck.

Furnace Reins
Vengeful Possession
Involuntary Employment

By playing Furnace Reins, you'll be able to gain control of a creature your opponent controls for the turn. If you're able to deal combat damage to your opponent (or a battle)with that creature, you'll be able to create a Treasure token. Vengeful Possession and Involuntary Employment are additional ways for you to take control of your opponents creatures for the turn.

Once you've attacked with the creature you've stolen from your opponent, you really don't want to give it back to them. This deck has numerous ways of sacrificing creatures under your control for additional benefits. For example, the adventure on Callous Sell-Sword, Burn Together, allows you to deal damage equal to the power of a creature you control to any other target. Then, you'll sacrifice that creature. That's basically dealing twice as much damage with the creature you stole. Other means of sacrificing include Pitiless Carnage, Disturbing Mirth, and Final Vengeance.

Wrapping Up

I love playing Red-based decks, and these decks all speak to me. I can't wait to take these to my friendly local game store or build them on Magic Arena.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
