Using Your Core

Reddit

Hello, everyone! While we only have about a month until the Throne of Eldraine prerelease, Core Set 2020 continues to offer us new innovations to use in existing decks as well as cards that allow new decks to be created. This week, I have a few more Standard decklists for you that look to be both fun and competitive. Let's get started.

Bant Ramp Hydra

The first deck I have for you looks to ramp up its mana production in an effort summon some huge Hydras to the battlefield. Let's take a look at the deck:

Finale of Glory
Paradise Druid, Leafkin Druid, and Llanowar Elves all work hard in this deck to offer you the extra mana you'll need to pump out ginormous Hydras. Use them early and use them often, because they're all very fragile. It doesn't take much for your opponent to clear them from the board, but if you manage to keep them long enough to cast a large Hydra or two, you'll be in a fine position. Risen Reef also helps you ramp your mana and it plays nicely alongside your other Elementals, Leafkin Druid and Cavalier of Thorns.

Once you have a way to make a fair amount of mana, you'll be able to cast the big finishers for this deck. Cavalier of Thorns acts as both a way to ramp your mana as well as a beefy creature you can use to attack your opponent with. Voracious Hydra also serves a double purpose by doubling as a big creature as well as a means of creature removal. Hydroid Krasis continues the trend of serving a double purpose by giving you a means of life and card drawing when you cast it and also being a large evasive threat.

This deck is also the perfect home for one of my favorite finishers - Finale of Glory. Since you're able to create a ton of mana with this deck, you have a good chance of casting Finale of Glory with X equaling ten or more which will fill your side of the battlefield with Soldier and Angel creature tokens. If that happens, your opponent might concede on the spot, since you'll be creating a minimum of twenty creatures.

Chandra's Sacrifice

The next deck I have for you this week is a Rakdos deck that harnesses the power of sacrificing your own creatures. Let's have a look:

Chandra, Acolyte of Flame
This deck looks to take advantage of using the 0 loyalty ability of Chandra, Acolyte of Flame to create two 1/1 Elemental creature tokens for the turn. Those tokens will end up being sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step. If you have a copy of Mayhem Devil on the battlefield, you'll be able to deal a point of damage for each of those sacrificed tokens to any target. You can use that damage to either deal with your opponents creatures or deal the damage directly to the opponent's dome.

The removal in this deck also works well with Mayhem Devil on the battlefield. Heartfire deals four damage to any target when you cast it, but casting it has the additional cost of sacrificing a creature or planeswalker you control. Spark Harvest can be cast for a single Black mana as long as you sacrifice a creature. The deck also has Priest of Forgotten Gods that can allow you to sacrifice two other creatures to give you two Black mana as well as causing your opponent to lose life and sacrifice a creature. As you can imagine, all of these cards work amazingly when you have multiple copies of Mayhem Devil in play, and you'll be able to end games very quickly.

This deck has another way you can quickly win games built into it as well. Cavalcade of Calamity will deal a point of damage to your opponent (or one of their planeswalkers) whenever a creature with power 1 or less attacks them (or their planeswalker). You can use that to deal damage to the opponent even when you know your creature will be blocked and killed. This works especially well with creatures like Sanitarium Skeleton since you can return it to your hand when it goes to your graveyard.

Goblins

The final deck I have for you is based on a tribe that I love to play - Goblins! Let's take a look at the deck:

Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin
Legion Warboss and Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin work together to quickly help you build a huge force of Goblins. Legion Warboss adds a Goblin to your army each turn, while Krenko add multiple Goblins (equal to his power) to your side of the battlefield. You can use those Goblins as a way to make additional mana by sacrificing them with Skirk Prospector, if you need to cast more things on your turn (or even on your opponent's turn).

Goblin Warchief not only makes many of your Goblins cost less to cast, but it also gives all of your Goblins haste. Samut, Tyrant Smasher is a little out of theme in this deck, but it acts as a junior warchief by also giving all of your creatures haste. Plus, you can use Samut's -1 loyalty ability to give a +2/+1 bonus to one of your creatures for the turn. This works especially well when you're attacking with Krenko.

Finally, there's two more Goblins that I want to call out from this deck. The first is Goblin Ringleader. Simply due to the sheer volume of Goblins in this deck, you should be able to get at least a couple more Goblins into your hand when you play Goblin Ringleader. And in this deck, the more Goblins you have on the battlefield, the better. Those Goblins will help you destroy most any creature your opponent has in play when you play Volley Veteran. This is especially useful to use on creatures that have flying, as they can be trouble for this deck to deal with.

Wrapping Up

As I was finishing up this article, the Banned and Restricted announcement took place. Wizards of the Coast has finally unbanned Rampaging Ferocidon. I'm curious to see what effect it will have now that it's legal in Standard again. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the impact it will have.

What do you think of these decks? Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Let me know by leaving a comment below or you can reply to me directly on Twitter (@mikelikesmtg), or email me directly at mikelikesmtg@gmail.com. Also, feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
