Monogreen Beats!

Reddit

I was fortunate enough to be invited to work at the most recent StarCityGames 5k series in Orlando. It's always a pleasure to work with the fine judges StarCity has at events and especially a level four judge like Ingrid who Head Judged the event! Needless to say, fun times were had by all.

While working the event I got in a pick-up game of EDH with Dale and a few of the other Tampa/North Carolina judges. I of course ran Progenitus against a field of Dralnu, Treva, Wrexial and Dale Lovelace's newest budget deck. I had my first six planeswalkers killed and then cast Obliterate with two active planeswalkers. The game ended shortly after that! I should note that by cast Obliterate I mean cascaded into it by casting Progenitus.

Having just crushed a table of my peers I set out to begin building a new deck. I knew I was going to get a nice shiny Natural Order for working and I wanted to put it to good use. I've been a big fan of Elves in Legacy and Extended and I decided to port the list over to EDH. Unfortunately Elves have been done to death with entirely too many Rofellos lists floating around and I hate to be one of the crowd. Seton, Krosan Protector has always stuck out as one of the more fun possibilities for a general and so I decided to see just how viable he could be.

As it turns out there are a good number of fun druids available. I tried to pick the best utility creatures possible to get the most bang for the buck so to speak. Nearly every card in the deck has a relevant "enters the battlefield" ability or a very relevant activated ability. I also tried to hose a few strategies, hardcore control and artifact decks to name a few.

Before I go into a deeper explanation, here is the list I ended up with:

This deck has a few things going for it. First, it's significantly cheaper than most of the EDH decks I build. The lands alone are much easier to find than my typical dualed out creations! Second, this deck has the potential for some blisteringly fast starts. There have been several times I've cast Seton on turn two and then proceeded to untap and win. Third, this deck has a good amount of card drawing for a mono-green list.

A few suggestions are in order. We could easily fit a few other fun cards in. Omnath feels like a solid inclusion if he is someone else's general as a nice wasteland type effect. Additionally, Harmonize is not necessarily a bad call. I tried not to include a lot of deck hosers in this build, but if it suits you things like Choke and Acid Rain can really put a damper on some strategies. Finally, graveyard hate might be in order, at least something like Relic of Progenitus.

There are a few tricky rules interactions to keep track of as well. First, Seton's ability lets you tap the creatures the turn they come into play. Glimpse sets up a trigger that occurs whenever you cast a creature, not when one resolves. Even better, if you should manage to cast Glimpse a second time you get to draw two cards! Regal Force triggers from entering the battlefield from anywhere, whereas Myojin only triggers if it's been cast from your hand, meaning you get to draw some cards, but you wouldn't get a divinity counter. On another fun note, if a spell or ability has any legal targets left when it resolves it does as much as possible. This means that if you use the Advocate's ability to destroy an artifact or enchantment and then the cards in the graveyard get removed you still get to destroy the enchantment/artifact!

Well, that's about all I have for this week, join me next week when I work on yet another new deck, one that wants to win through any means necessary… Until then this is Benjamin McDole giving you 100 reasons to play magic
