Every Prerelease has a hook these days. Theros, Born of the Gods, and Journey into Nyx took us across the Hero's Path to glory. Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, and Dragon's Maze were filled with guild-focused goodies. For Magic 2015, we'll do battle against Garruk the Slayer himself.
Every Prerelease box at the Magic 2015 Prerelease will contain an oversized Garruk the Slayer card, and the goal is as simple as you suspect: defeat Garruk!
Here's how it works. One player plays his or her Prerelease Magic deck as normal. This player always goes first. Pretty straightforward. The other player, however, plays as Garruk! Garruk starts at 20 loyalty, and can activate one loyalty ability each turn.
Like any other Planeswalker, Garruk can be attacked—and if his loyalty reaches 0, he loses. But if Garruk's horde of Wolves drops the player to 0, then Garruk wins! (And no, the oversized Garruk Planeswalker card can't be returned to its owner's hand or otherwise removed—nice try.)
The oversized Garruk Planeswalker card is a key component of Magic 2015's experience design (designed by Ethan Fleischer and Gavin Verhey), but it's not the only one!
You see, every store is also getting an eight-foot-tall Garruk standee that looks like, well, this:
After your game, take a picture next to Garruk posing in a way that shows how your game went. Maybe you bested Garruk and can puff out your chest and show your dominance. Or maybe Garruk was too much for you to handle and you look deflated and defeated. Who knows what a tie would look like?
However you do, upload your picture to HuntBiggerGame.com when it goes live 6/30.
While it remains to be seen if there will be associated achievements for Planeswalker Points or prizes for those uploading photos, an oversized planeswalker card is at least both a new ways to get extra play out of our Prerelease decks and sweet Magic swag to show off later.
Magic 2015 Prerelease events kick off July 12-13, 2014. Will you be going?
