As most of us nerds know, Magicon Las Vegas happened this past weekend. This event is always packed full of great Magic celebs, unique products, Magic panels, and much more. One of the panels was about upcoming releases. We got a first look at an Aang card from the Avatar: The Last Airbender set coming later this year. The other preview cards we received are for Edge of Eternities, a space themed set coming in August. One of the preview cards was The Seriema.
The Seriema introduces a brand new Artifact subtype: Spacecraft. Spacecraft work similarly to how vehicles operate, except they remain a creature once the "Station" cost has been paid. Station costs are coming in the form of tapping creatures and adding counters to a Spacecraft, in order to meet a goal amount. This involves a lot of neat card design. It incorporates aspects of vehicle crewing which we are all familiar with, but adding a slight flare to it. It also makes perfect sense flavorfully that you need multiple creatures to operate a Spacecraft, whereas vehicles most of the time only require one creature to become crewed.
Now, with all of the background in mind, we can move on to the title of this article: The Rules Change. With the release of Edge of Eternities, a lot of Spacecrafts are going to be legendary, if not all of them. The Commander Format Panel has decided that Spacecrafts could make for some really interesting Commander options. There's just one problem, they aren't creatures. They are artifacts that can become creatures after their Station cost is paid. The panel decided to change a rule to make the Spacecrafts playable: All legendary vehicles and spacecraft are allowed in the Command Zone.
This new change has unlocked 21 new Commanders that are eligible to be in the Command Zone! Anytime a rules change creates more Commander options it's very exciting! There are a lot of new decks to explore and a lot of cards to find that may synergize with having a legendary artifact Command your brew. Let's just take a quick look at what Commanders have unlocked!
We were first introduced to vehicles with the release of Kaladesh. There were only a couple of legendary vehicles to come out of that set and most of them are unplayable in the Command Zone. Actually, to be fair, most of the colorless legendary vehicles seem pretty mediocre to be leading an entire deck, however, there are a couple standouts.
Weatherlight and Weatherlight Compleated are two very different variants of card advantage, but who doesn't want to pilot the Weatherlight? Golden Argosy is essentially a colorless version of Brago, King Eternal, which could be very unique. Lastly, The Regalia is a colorless landfall deck! Now you're asking what are some colorless cards that care about landfall... that's for you to find out.
Let's move on to mono colored vehicles. Esika's Chariot is probably one of the best vehicles, since it creates creatures that can crew it. Esika's Chariot also can create copies of tokens, making it a very versatile Commander. Grond, the Gatebreaker is just a flavorful way to itch that The Lord of the Rings itch you have been feeling. Parhelion II is a ginormous flying threat that is going to create even more flying threats.
RMS Titanic is a very explosive Red Commander that can help cast ginormous spells extremely quickly. The Falcon, Airship Restored is a Reanimator deck built around a vehicle. Have you ever considered playing Death's Shadow in the Command Zone? Now you can with The Last Ride!
There is an overflowing well of new possibilities with these new Commanders. The Jackdaw is an amazing card advantage engine for an artifact build and could work extremely flavorfully around lots of pirate cards! All right, all right, I'm sure you get it now. Go forth and brew up a fresh new list featuring some of these amazing cards that have been locked out of the Command Zone until now! I hope you have fun playing around with these designs as much as I have!
See you on the battlefield!
