Final Fantasy is officially out and there are so many new cards to comb through. This set also has some very powerful cards and unfortunately many of them have a very high price tag. But don't worry, there are still lots of fun cards for us budget players. I am going to dive into the top ten budget singles for Commanderfrom the brand-new Final Fantasy set!
Gran Pulse Ochu
Deathtouch is one of the most overlooked keywords when it comes to Commander. No one wants to add a card like Ankle Biter to their deck because it's dull (unless you are building snake typal). However, deathtouch creatures can alter combat by deterring your opponents from attacking you, but in the late game that could be irrelevant.
Meet Gran Pulse Ochu, a one Green mana deathtoucher that grows into a massive threat in the late game. Green has been getting a lot of graveyard support as of late and this card helps that strategy by being an early game combat deterrent and being a late game finisher. This card is one of the best deathtouch creatures that we can get down as early as turn one!
Freya Crescent
Red can't ramp...says who?! We received Sunset Strikemaster from Tarkir: Dragonstorm just a few months ago. Now we have a specific mana dork for equipment centric decks!
Freya Crescent is only one red mana that taps to add red for equipment spells and equip costs. Red doesn't have amazing turn one plays most of the time (unless it's in the form of a sol ring). Red usually relies on bursts of mana from ritual spells, but now we have a great evasive dork that is a staple in equipment and voltron strategies!
Quina, Qu Gourmet
Token decks are always getting support. Final Fantasy really leans into tokens in Selesnya and gave us a couple of new toys. Quina, Qu Gourmet is a great one on a budget.
Quina, Qu Gourmet is an early set up piece that will give us an additional frog token each time we have an instance of token generation. Chatterfang, Squirrel General is one of the most popular token Commanders to date and has a very similar effect. Quina should be on your radar to pick up a few copies while it is so cheap!
Blitzball
Never did I think I would be screaming "GOAAAAAAL!" in a game of Commander, but here we are. Blitzball is a brand-new mana rock at three mana that can be sacrificed to draw some cards later in the game.
Blitzball is extremely similar to Commander's Sphere, an early staple of the Commander format. Sphere has been on the chopping block for a while with the rise of two-cost mana rocks just being more efficient, even if they lack the card draw from Sphere. Blitzball is an excellent new version of Commander's Sphere that gives you an incentive to go to combat and try and break through your opponent's defences.
Delivery Moogle
Tutor cards are always good to have in your deck. They just help make your deck more consistent and help find useful pieces to make your deck run smoother, they also usually fetch a high price tag. Delivery Moogle is a tutor on a creature for an artifact card.
Delivery Moogle is four mana for a moogle that enters and searches your deck and/or graveyard for an artifact with mana value two or less and put it into your hand. This doesn't only fetch a useful artifact out of your deck, it can also bring back that Sol Ring you played turn one that was destroyed. The fact that this has the ability to grab two cards is great and it being on a creature in White is even better. Brago, King Eternal constantly is getting great new cards.
Commune with Beavers
Commune with Beavers is arguably the most boring card on this list, but that doesn't mean it isn't powerful. Cantrips in Green have been on the rise lately with cards like Abundant Harvest and Malevolent Rumble. Commune with Beavers is just another tool that Green has for those slots in decks. Green artifact decks are pretty uncommon, but this card is an allstar for those decks moving forward.
Summon: G. F. Cerberus
The last card was a dull one, but this one is a very interesting card. Summon: G. F. Cerberus is a brand-new saga creature from Final Fantasy. Saga creatures were introduced in this set and an excellent design in my opinion. Summon: G. F. Cerberus is one of my favorites of this cycle. This card adds some super explosive turns for a spell slinging deck in red.
Cerberus will surveil one when it enters, be a Double Vision for a turn, and then be two Double Visions the next turn! What spell would you copy three times with this card? Mine would have to be Incarnation Technique or Dance with Calamity.
Zack Fair
White has a never ending supply of protection pieces. From Selfless Savior to Mother of Runes, White can make sure your creatures stay in play forever. Zack Fair is a brand-new protection creature for one mana. He can be sacrificed for one generic mana and then give a creature indestructible.
Zack also moves all counters from himself onto the creature you target, as well as move any equipment he is holding as well. Since Zack Fair enters with a counter, this is essentially an on board Snakeskin Veil. White loves to play as many creatures as possible, and this is a low mana value legend for Commanders like Jodah, the Unifier.
Black Mage's Rod
Black Mage's Rod is my favorite card on this list. Not only is it my favorite for having such amazing art, it also is incredibly powerful for only being a common artifact spell. Having a way to drain the table in Black is nothing new, however draining the table by casting noncreature spells is unique.
Black has been getting lots of artifact support as of late which is pretty sweet. This card slots perfectly into those decks that are playing cards such as Disciple of the Vault and Reckless Fireweaver. I am a huge fan of the Rakdos wizard support in this set and I think they will be impactful for years to come. I am currently picking up a couple copies of this card to save for later projects.
Towns
All of the cards on this list have been super-duper budget, every single card has been under $1. Now some of these cards are that much and some of them are just a little higher, but for the price I would definitely still label these as great budget pickups. I am talking about none other than the brand new rare town cycle.
Ishgard, the Holy See is not the best piece of recursion in White, but you certainly can't beat it being on a land. Jidoor, Aristocratic Capital is the weakest of the cycle, mainly for the fact that it will only see play in mill decks. Lindblum, Industrial Regency is one of the best! It creates a wizard token that pings off noncreature spells. Midgar, City of Mako is a Village Rites for three mana on a land, not bad at all. And finally we have Zanarkand, Ancient Metropolis. This land is again, not the best, however the utility on a land is still good.
All of these lands are similar to the lands that are double sided from Modern Horizons 3. The main difference is that we can play these towns out of exile while they are out on adventure. These are great cards for mono-colored or two-colored Commanderdecks, I can see these cards steadily increasing in price over time.
That wraps it up for the best budget cards for Commanderfrom Final Fantasy. I hope you enjoyed this list and do your best to pick up a couple copies of these cards while they are sitting this low.
See you on the battlefield!
