Murders At Karlov Manor Previews Complete

Preview season for Murders at Karlov Manor continued this week with actual previews finishing much sooner than usual. Rather than waiting until today for everything to show up in the complete image gallery, every card was officially revealed by Wednesday. The official images for the final cards - including the Commander decks - appeared in the image gallery on Thursday, along with all of the tokens for the set.

You can find out more details in my additional preview recap article also on CoolStuffInc.com today.

Outlaws of Thunder Junction Receives Release Date

As the previews for Murders at Karlov Manor wrap up, Wizards put out some early details for the next set: Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The set has been announced for a full release on April 19th, with prerelease events beginning on April 12 - and with them official release at the LGS level. Further details and previews will be taking place at MagicCon Chicago next month, so make sure you check out those details at that time.

Layoffs Hit eBay

eBay reported this week that they will be laying off 1000 employees in January. This amount reportedly accounts for 9% of their employees according to The Verge and will no doubt have massive impacts on the company as a whole. Given eBay's presence in the collectibles market - especially with the recent acquisition of TCGplayer, it's unclear how this may impact the industry going forward or how many at TCGplayer itself will be impacted thus far. This news comes amid a swell of layoffs in the gaming industry, such as Microsoft announcing 1900 layoffs and Riot announcing 500 as well - not to mention the Hasbro and WotC layoffs last month.

Secret Lair Raining Cats and Dogs Comes and Goes

The fourth Secret Lair Commander deck, Raining Cats and Dogs, released this week. It first crept up (with no formal announcement) roughly two weeks ago slowly revealing the main double-faced cards over a period of a few days. Then on January 19, Wizards revealed the full deck list ahead of its release on the Secret Lair webpage the following Monday. When the deck went on sale, it sold out fast with none left after just a few hours' time. Some noted how this might have something to do with the new limited print run release schedule for Secret Lairs, however both of the last two Secret Lair decks (From Cute to Brute and Angels: They're Just Like Us...) were also limited print run releases that sold out quick. As such, we won't have a clear idea of how the new print run schedule affects things until the next superdrop, which is expected to begin being revealed soon.

Alex Hon, Winner of Grand Prix Richmond 2018, Passes Away

Alex Hon, best known for playing regularly on the SCG Tour and winning the Standard portion of Grand Prix Richmond 2018, passed away on January 23, 2024. He was 35. News broke on Facebook when his sister posted on his feed to announce his passing, citing health problems over the past few years. She noted him as "an unstoppable force" and commented on his passion and skill with the game. Multiple players and community members came out to celebrate him, his life, and his career in the game. Rest in peace, Alex.

Decklist of the Week

Taking a break from the past couple of weeks of Standard lists, we finally had a decent sized Timeless event take place last weekend. The format has been widely popular among competitive players and content creators thus far, with many hailing it as one of the best formats you can currently be playing. Nicole Dubin took down this first event - dubbed the Timeless Open - on the back of a Jund Midrange list. If you've played Modern Jund circa 2012, this should feel like a fairly familiar deck, providing a fun, classic experience looking for an opportunity to Jund 'em out. Take it for a spin and see what the format's all about!
