Back to School: The Secrets of Strixhaven Debut is Here

Reddit

At long last, the second in-universe Magic: The Gathering expansion of 2026 is here.

This time, we're returning to the world of Arcavios and the scholarly school of Strixhaven. Following the much beloved original Strixhaven: School of Mages in 2021, it was only fitting we'd return once more for a new set and a new look at the plane.

Secrets of Strixhaven previews kicked off earlier today. The official Debut Stream began the festivities by revealing tons of awesome new cards, stellar reprints, and a whole host of killer variants. As usual, the Debut Video continued into the WeeklyMTG stream that showcased things like set mechanics and Draft archetypes.

There are tons of cards to cover, so let's get right to it.

The Newest Hotness

Naturally, the we're going to highlight the freshest cards first and foremost. Here are several of the cards shown off from the main Secrets of Strixhaven set.

The Five Elder Dragons

All five of the Elder Dragons which lead the five colleges are making repeat appearance. Each one features an older mechanic, granting that mechanic to Instants and Sorceries you cast.

In case you're wondering why Quandrix, the Proof uses Cascade and not Discover, Wizards stated this was to keep the card's text box cleaner.

A Pair of Planeswalkers

Additionally, this set sees two new Planeswalker cards in it.

The first is an old favorite Planeswalker. Ral Zarek, Guest Lecturer - the famous Orzhov Lawyer (as noted in the stream) - sees the classic Planeswalker return with a new Mono-Black coat of paint. There's also a rather curious watermark on the card, though we know nothing about what that entails at this time.

Professor Dellian Fel is an all-new Planeswalker from Witherbloom with a very interesting set of abilities.

Both cards were noted as a sort of return to form in terms of simplicity on Planeswalker cards, making them easier to read while still being fun to play. Both cards also feature four abilities rather than the classic three.

The Mechanics of Secrets of Strixhaven

Prepare

Prepare is a mechanic that acts as a sort of reverse Adventure. Rather than casting the spell first and then the permanent, you instead play the permanent first and then use its Prepared status to cast an Instant or Sorcery spell.

All five of the new first-year Strixhaven students that showed up in Lorwyn Eclipsed make a return here once again, each featuring this mechanic.

More exciting, though, is the numerous cards with this mechanic that feature famous classic cards as well. Here you can see old favorites such as Reanimate, Rampant Growth, and even a piece of the Power Nine in Ancestral Recall showing up on a set of cards.

Repartee (Silverquill)

Silverquill's mechanic, Repartee, involves a variety of abilities that trigger whenever you cast an Instant or Sorcery targeting a Creature. Unlike Heroic and Valiant, this does not require you to target only your Creatures, meaning you can get bonuses from targeting opponents' Creatures as well.

Opus (Prismari)

Opus, the Prismari mechanic, acts as a beefed up version of Magecraft from the original Strixhaven: School of Mages. Whereas that just generically provided a bonus for casting an Instant or Sorcery, this does that same thing but takes the bonus even further if you cast it using five or more mana.

If you're familiar with cards using a similar unnamed mechanic from Final Fantasy (Sahagin, Blazing Bomb) then this will probably look familiar to you.

Infusion (Witherbloom)

Infusion, the Witherbloom Mechanic, provides a bonus for doing something almost a bit too simple: gaining life. These cards provide various bonuses if you gained any life during the turn. In the case of spells, it provides bonuses when casting. Some, like Old-Growth Educator, gain their bonuses via other methods like entering the battlefield.

Flashback (Lorehold)

Flashback is a classic mechanic that's perfect for Lorehold. The simple mechanic allows you to recast a spell with Flashback from your graveyard and then exile it upon resolution. Lorehold loves to research the past and bring it back to life, which makes Flashback an excellent fit.

Increment (Quandrix)

The final school mechanic, Increment, provides an interesting new take on the older Evolve mechanic. Rather than giving your Creatures +1/+1 counters for playing bigger creatures, it provides them with bonuses for casting spells for more mana than their Power and Toughness.

Paradigm (Lessons)

Lessons return in a very light dose this time around with a cycle of Mythic Rares utilizing the Paradigm mechanic. These cards act as a new and interesting take on Epic from Saviors of Kamigawa (Enduring Ideal and the like) allowing you to recast them over and over again for the rest of the game.

It's worth noting that Learn will not be returning in this set, so players concerned about the impact on Standard with the Izzet Lessons deck should have little to worry about.

Converge

Converge also makes a return in this set, last having been seen in the Battle for Zendikar block. These spells get bigger and more powerful for each different kind of mana you pay to play them. Several of these were already revealed previously, though Rancorous Archaic is all new.

Books

Finally, a new Artifact subtype is appearing in the set: Book. It's unclear thus far how this will impact things, however it was stated that many cards will retroactively have this subtype added to them when the set releases.

Amazing Reprints

In addition to the new cards, Secrets of Strixhaven brings with it a ton of awesome new reprints, most notably through the Mystical Archive bonus sheet.

The Mystical Archive

The Mystical Archive is a returning element that made the original Strixhaven so popular. This extra set of cards features several powerful Instants and Sorceries from throughout Magic's history, highlighting the plane's spellcasting theme.

Several powerful cards were shown off on this first day, with cards like Force of Will and Vampiric Tutor leading the pack as the most exciting options.

In addition to the normal versions, the beloved Japanese alternate art treatments return once again as well. These special versions are exclusive to Japanese Booster Packs as well as Collector Boosters of all languages.

Whereas the original Strixhaven set included special Foil Etched versions of each of these Mystical Archive cards, Secrets of Strixhaven is doing something a little different. No special treatment is being done for the normal Mystical Archive cards, however Japanese versions will have special Silver Scroll Foils available as Collector Booster exclusives.

The remaining Mystical Archive cards are expected to be revealed next Tuesday, April 7.

Enemy Slow Lands

The main set also brings with it a mighty set of returning Non-Basic Lands in the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt/Crimson Vow Slow Lands. These lands enter untapped if you control two or more lands already on the battlefield.

Only the enemy colored lands appear in Secrets of Strixhaven to match with the set's enemy colored theming. It wasn't stated whether or not we would see the allied colored ones later on, but history would suggest that is likely going to be the case.

Special Guests

Ten Special Guest cards were also revealed for the set. Many of these are special reprints of cards from the original Strixhaven and its accompanying Commander release or are themed in a way to care about Instants and Sorceries. A small handful also highlight the Library element of the set's Biblioplex setting.

Also, thanks no doubt to the complicated rules nonsense that Library of Leng causes, it will be replaced on MTG Arena with the powerful Library of Alexandria. This will bring Library of Alexandria into Timeless for the first time.

Tons of Initial Commander Reveals

Secrets of Strixhaven has five brand new Commander decks, much like how the original Strixhaven set did. Now we can finally get our first official look at all five face commanders for each of the decks. Every one is helmed by one of the five story Legendary creatures from the original set in order to give them top billing.

Lorehold Spirit

It's always exciting when a Planeswalker card helms a Commander deck, and that's happening with the Lorehold Spirit precon. Quintorius, History Chaser brings this beloved Loxodon Planeswalker back once again where he fills your graveyard and makes Spirit tokens as you pull those cards out of that graveyard.

Silverquill Influence

Killian also returns once again, this time focusing a bit less on the classic Inkling tokens. Instead, the Silverquill Influence deck will utilize a substantial amount of Aura spells, which Killian, Decisive Mentor rewards you for playing plenty of.

Quandrix Unlimited

Quandrix is well known for casting spells that make massive creatures with plenty of +1/+1 counters on them. Zimone, Infinite Analyst - main commander of the Quandrix Unlimited deck - takes this to the extreme. Not only do you get to make Zimone bigger as you cast tons of x cost spells, but every time you do it provides further x cost spells with even more fuel to grow them exponentially.

Prismari Artistry

The Prismari are back once again to go nuts casting Instants and Sorceries. This kind of deck usually has a specific kind of Spellslinging flair to it, but the benefit here is a bit different than your typical fare. Rather than encouraging you to cast as many spells as possible, Rootha, Mastering the Moment instead asks you to cast the biggest spell you can turn after turn to make plenty of huge tokens.

Witherbloom Pestilence

Finally, Dina of Witherbloom is back again to brew up some fine tea and great Aristocrats gameplay. The original Witherbloom loved making small Pest tokens that you wanted to sacrifice. Dina, Essence Brewer continues this by encouraging you to sacrifice your creatures for plenty of life gain, card draw, and +1/+1 counters all wrapped up in a neat little package.

One More Card

Replenish

One other card was shown from these decks, showing the Prepared mechanic on Eiganjo Dynastorian. This was revealed to be one of five guest lecturers to Strixhaven and features another famous card on it: Replenish.

All five Commander decks will be fully revealed tomorrow, April 1st, by a variety of Commander shows and major Media outlets. Check out the Where to Find Secrets of Strixhaven Previews article in the Additional Resources section at the bottom of this article for all those details and more.

Variants Galore

Much like the original Strixhaven: School of Mages release, variants are few and far between this time around. There are no unique variant frames here as the usual Strixhaven showcase frame is the Mystical Archive subset itself.

Still, a few non-Mystical Archive variants are included, primarily at higher rarities.

Borderless Cards

The primary variant treatment for Secrets of Strixhaven is a bunch of Borderless Art cards. This continues the trend of most of the main variants from the original Strixhaven which were mainly Borderless Art cards.

Much like the first time around, all five of the Elder Dragons receive this fancy Borderless Art treatment, showcasing them as critical elements of the set and the plane.

Additionally, like the first Strixhaven, both Planeswalker cards receive Borderless Art versions as well. Both feature art from Oistina Kalidah.

In a departure from the original Strixhaven, the five Slow Land cards also feature Borderless Art. In this case, the lands offer a new take called "Portal View Lands" which are a sort of new version of Edge of Eternities' "Viewport Land" cards.

The last of these Borderless Art cards are another returning favorite: the Borderless Field Notes treatment. These cards have become beloved following their usage in Bloomburrow and Avatar: the Last Airbender and make a sensible return in Secrets of Strixhaven. After all, what would a school set be if you weren't taking notes?

Fancy Basic Lands

Full-Art Basic Lands were revealed to be returning once again in what has become a staple of Magic for the past several years. These lands showcase a single silhouetted Strixhaven student on each with the mana symbol brightly above them. The normal versions have yet to be shown off, but it should be expected these will provide a variation in select Play Boosters and Collector Boosters.

Extended Art Treatment

Interestingly, Extended Art cards were called out directly in this stream. In recent debuts, these have not been highlighted, but got a little extra shine this time around thanks to the low variety among other variants.

Typically, Extended Art cards are those that don't have any other variant versions throughout the set. Only Rares and Mythic Rares receive this treatment.

One Epic Headliner Card

Last but not least, the mighty Emeritus of Ideation card was always a clear standout for this set. After all, it casts Ancestral Recall. Not just an approximation either, but rather actual, factual Ancestral Recall.

Naturally, this means that Wizards decided to pull out all the stops and make the card the Serialized Headliner for Secrets of Strixhaven. Not only does this card see Alpha artist Mark Poole return to and reference his original art for Ancestral Recall, but it utilizes the old Player Rewards format from the 2000's as well. This includes small touches like the lack of a black collector information bar at the bottom of the card, making it a really fun throwback in several ways.

You may have a chance at opening a copy of this awesome card in Collector Booster packs in addition to the many other awesome cards that you can find in those packs.

Conclusion

With such an intense deluge of cards revealed, it's sure to be a very interesting preview season ahead of us for the next two weeks.

This time, Wizards is doing something a bit interesting compared to how we usually experience preview seasons. Every single day will be themed around a different aspect of the set.

As mentioned previously, tomorrow will feature all five Commander decks. After that will be days focusing on Prismari, Lorehold, and Quandrix. Following those will be a break on April 7th to go over all the remaining cards from the Mystical Archive bonus sheet. Once that wraps, we'll get Silverquill and finally Witherbloom before the complete Card Image Gallery drops on April 10th.

I'll be providing coverage for these days throughout the preview season, so be sure to check back every day for more information. You can also go preorder everything you need from Secrets of Strixhaven right here on CoolStuffInc as new cards are listed every day.
