Witherbloom Previews Infuse Themselves Into Secrets Of Strixhaven

Reddit

We've finally reached the end of individual previews for Secrets of Strixhaven. We've seen two weeks packed with tons of sweet new cards, including coverage of Prismari, Lorehold, Quandrix, Silverquill, and the Mystical Archive.

Now it's Previews are coming to a close with a look at Witherbloom, the final school of Strixhaven featuring a myriad of Black and Green cards. There's lots to cover, so let's get right into it.

Who Are The Witherbloom?

The Witherbloom are all about the cycle of life and death and how they exist in tandem with one another. Often, they learn this by Pests, small Creatures doomed to die but who reward you with beneficial life gain when they do so.

Dina, a dryad and recent graduate of the school, grapples with her grief in the latest side-story for Secrets of Strixhaven titled "Down to the Lake, Alone."

We got to see a single preview card from this story: Efflorescence. This card puts two +1/+1 counters on a Creature and makes it even more mighty if you gain some life. The flavor text calls attention to the life-death balance of the school.

A Cool New Legend

Now, though, let's get into the main previews shown off today, starting with a single Legendary Creature previewed by Event Horizon.

Blech, Loafing Pest is the son of Blex, Vexing Pest from the original Strixhaven: School of Mages.

Blex was neat in that it buffed a lot of lesser used Creature types, though it only did so as one single static ability. With Blech, though, you instead put +1/+1 counters on Creatures of those types turn after turn.

If you build a deck around Blech, though, you should absolutely start your deck off right with a copy of Blex, Vexing Pest // Search for Blex in your 99.

Powerful New Spells

While there's only one new Legend to show off, there are still a lot of awesome other cards to cover.

Recurring Nightmare, is that you? Uncle Mosquito previewed Cauldron of Essence, and it provides you a means of repeatedly sacrificing and reanimating Creatures turn after turn, much like the old Exodus classic. When combined with the card's inherent Blood Artist effect, though, it's sure to take plenty of Commander games by storm in the coming days.

Entomb and Eladamri's Call have long been favorites in numerous formats, so what if you stapled them together in a single effect?

Dina's Guidance, the first of two cards previewed by Variety, allows you to tutor a Creature and then put it into your hand or your graveyard. Often, putting it into your hand is ideal, but sometimes reanimating it is just easier.

Superior Spider-Man sure does like this card quite a bit.

It's been many years since we've seen a new Pox card, but we finally have one again. ZMainCharacter and Maldhound teamed up to show off a handful of awesome previews, with Pox Plague being one of them. If this gets cast, get ready to lose tons of cards all around. Best of all, though, if you have a copy of Bloodletter of Aclazotz when this gets cast, you will win the game on the spot in most cases due to the life loss being doubled.

The second preview shown off by ZMainCharacter and Maldhound is also the final Mythic Rare Lesson card of the set. Germination Practicum is a very elegant design that's certain to shower your board in +1/+1 counters turn after turn, snowballing out of control with ease. That's sure to make it a potential player in Standard, a fan favorite in Commander, and a Limited bomb.

Infusing Some Power

With this revisitation to Stixhaven, the Witherbloom lean into life gain as their core game plan. This was true the last time as well, but this time it's been keyworded with the Infusion mechanic, which provides a bonus if you've gained life this turn.

Take Foolish Fate for example. This was previewed by the card's artist Danny Schwartz and acts as some premium removal. If you happened to gain some life, though, you'll also make that Creature's controller lose 3 life. This gives off strong flashbacks to Unlicensed Disintegration, which was a powerhouse during its time in Standard.

Alternatively, you can turn an underwhelming Creature into a powerful removal option all its own with Poisoner's Apprentice. The final card previewed by ZMainCharacter and Maldhound, this card gives a Creature -4/-4 when it enters, so long as you gained some life first. Talk about a sweet deal.

One of the biggest surprises among the Infusion previews was the huge threat of Tragedy Feaster (previewed by Dexerto). Getting a 7/6 Creature with Trample for only four mana is monstrous, and the costs to keep it around are quite minimal as well. The Infusion mechanic here is used as a check, where if you don't gain life, you must sacrifice a permanent. Either way, it's a cost worth paying for such a powerful card.

If you want to ensure you gain some life, cards like Dissection Practice and Postmortem Professor are great ways of doing so. Dissection Practice (Event Horizon's second preview) acts as a great bit of removal while simultaneously gaining you life. It can also help buff your Postmortem Professor (Variety's second preview), though you probably won't mind if it dies since it comes back pretty easily.

Dare To Prepare

Only one card with the Prepare mechanic was revealed by the time of writing this article, though we've still yet to see the final Emeritus card.

Vastlands Scavenger

Vastlands Scavenger, previewed by Hareruya, is huge. Three mana for a 4/4 Deathtoucher is already a fantastic deal on its face. If you can cast the spell side, Bind to Life, though, you can easily slam a huge Creature onto the battlefield. Even if this doesn't make the biggest splash in Constructed, this is a no brainer for Commander decks full with big Creatures they want to cheat into play.

Conclusion

That's a wrap for all of the individual previews for Secrets of Strixhaven. With the complete Card Image Gallery now revealed, there's plenty to look through and talk about. The set looks positively stacked and is bound to be one of the year's best releases by a substantial margin.

Prerelease kicks off next week on April 17th, so be sure to check with your local game store for details on what events they'll be running.
