The Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy Commander Decks are Here!

Reddit

Typically, when a new set gets through its preview season, I tend to do short write-ups at the end of each week recapping the previews. However, this past week I did a bit of traveling to Hartford, CT for the US Regional Championship and thus wasn't able to get something done in time. Today, I'm making up for lost time. Rather than talk about a bunch of the cards out of the main set and the Through the Ages subset, I'm going to talk about the Commander lists that came out last week today!

All four Commander decks centering around what are arguably the four most popular and beloved titles in the series were revealed last week's Monday (the 12th). The WeeklyMTG stream noted there was supposed to be a video accompanying them but technical issues prevented them from doing so. As such, we just got the lists all in one go. Let's give a hearty "kupo!" and pull them up and take a quick look!

Revival Trance Precon | Commander

The Revival Trance precon focuses on the Super Nintendo classic of Final Fantasy VI. In this game, Terra is the de facto main character who leads a group of fourteen possible party members - excluding temporary ones - to battle against the diabolical Kefka. All fourteen main party members are here, as well as Kefka and the temporary party members General Leo Cristophe and Banon, the Returners' Leader. It's a great representation of one of the best stories told in video games with a lot of powerful moments represented, such as the party fully reformed on Rise of the Dark Realms or Cyan's final farewell to his loved ones on Night's Whisper. As a long time FFVI lover, this is easily my favorite of the bunch, but make no mistake: the others are no slouches either.

Limit Break Precon | Commander

The Limit Break precon features main character Cloud Strife and his partner in crime Tifa Lockhart. Final Fantasy VII put the series - and arguably video game RPGs as a whole - on the map in Western markets back in 1997. The game's deft blend of action and storytelling comes through here, featuring not only every party member, but also an equipment that represents one of their signature weapons throughout the games. Several fan favorite moments are depicted, such as Clever Concealment depicting the moment where Cloud dresses up as a woman for a stealth mission, the Jenova head Skullclamp, and - of course - the Harmonize art featuring the game's most famous moment. It's a home run for any Final Fantasy fan and well deserving of a precon here.

Counter Blitz Precon | Commander

Final Fantasy X depicts the journey of Tidus and how he becomes the guardian (and romantic partner) of the summoner Yuna. The Counter Blitz precon not only depicts this extremely well, but also finds ways to utilize the title's in-game mechanics to full effect. There's even a card called Sphere Grid! Players loved seeing the famous laughing scene utilized in the deck's Inspiring Call reprint and had their heartstrings tugged when they laid eyes on the newest version of Farewell. It's a lovingly crafted deck that pays homage to a wonderful cast of characters - all of whom appear here - in the best way possible.

Scions & Spellcraft Precon | Commander

Finally there's Final Fantasy XIV's Scions & Spellcraft deck. I've said this many times throughout my Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy coverage that this game is a bit of a blind spot for me in the series. However, there's quite a lot I recognize here! Y'shtola herself is one of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn - a group of allies throughout much of the main story's quest lines. Many, if not all, of the members are here, as are a number of fun in-game references like Champions from Beyond representing the party members the game finds with a Duty Finder or Into the Story showing the opening cutscene. If you're a fan of the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy XIV: Online, then there's sure to be something for you to love here.

That wraps up this brief overview on these sweet new decks! Later this week I'll be back once again to cover last week's cards as well as the rest of this week's to catch up on all the goodies previewed. This release is massive and there's a lot of ground to cover, so I hope you'll join me in doing so!
