Edge of Eternities Previews Fire Into Hyperdrive

Reddit

Following a modest jaunt through the many realms of a beloved video game franchise with Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy, Wizards is bringing us back to an in-universe setting once again. The glorious sci-fi space opera set Edge of Eternities is coming very soon and this week kicked things off with an epic debut stream on Tuesday. Today, I'm going to run through several of the coolest cards shown off throughout the week and highlight just what makes this set so damn awesome.

There's a ton of ground - or perhaps space - to cover, so let's get right to it!

What's New and Pricey?

Exalted Sunborn

If there's one thing we've seen time and time again, it's that players really love doubling effects - particularly when it comes to doubling tokens. Exalted Sunborn continues the recent tradition from the past few years of White mythics with this kind of ability, leading it to having a price that's as deserved as you might expect.

Uthros, Titanic Godcore

Um, Tolarian Academy? Is that you? Uthros, Titanic Godcore represents one of the five planets in the set that utilize the all-new station mechanic. How do you make a set of mythic lands feel mythic? Give them incredibly potent abilities, naturally! Uthros requires plenty of investment to make work, but if you can do so it can prove incredibly potent. Try sticking it with copies of Cranial Plating and Nettlecyst and watch games get out of hand fast.

The Endstone

The central element of the Edge of Eternities story brings with it an extremely powerful spell. It's not often you see a card that lets you continuously draw cards from simply taking basic game actions, but that's precisely what The Endstone does. Best of all, it continuously resets your life to a modest amount. This can make you quite difficult to take out in the right setting, and makes for one hell of a powerful mythic all around.

The Cards People Are Talking About

Ouroboroid

Ouroboroid might look a little small and innocuous for a mythic, but it gets out of hand fast. Not only does it dish out counters the turn it comes into play, but it also pumps itself with its ability. That means the counters it hands out grow exponentially the longer it remains on the battlefield and can be nuts right from the jump with as little as a simple Giant Growth.

Ragost, Deft Gastronaut

When Mark Rosewater's set teaser went live, many players - myself included - had their attention drawn to the creature type line of "Legendary Creature - Lobster Citizen." As you might expect, several references to the beloved Futurama character Zoidberg were made as a result. While the actual card may not be all that Zoidberg-esque, the sheer absurdity of the art and the design made it the talk of the town shortly after the set's debut stream.

Thrumming Hivepool

Whoa, a brand-new, Standard-legal card that makes slivers in 2025?! That's exactly what Thrumming Hivepool does! Slivers are one of Magic's most iconic creature types, and as such it's incredibly exciting to see them make an appearance once more here. Thus far, this appears to be a one-off nod to these classic critters, though perhaps it could be a hint at things to come in the near future.

Awesome New Reprints

Unfortunately, thus far we've yet to see very many impactful reprints in the main set. That, of course, excludes the critically important shock land cycle we already saw revealed a few weeks back. Besides these, we've also gotten Banishing Light - a card already in Standard - and a fresh and much-welcome reprint of Annul.

Thankfully, though, the set's bonus sheet offers a much richer assortment of reprints. Taking advantage of Edge of Eternities's setting, the Stellar Sights subset offers up several reprints of classic and iconic lands. Several of these, such as Gemstone Caverns, Inventors' Fair, and Mana Confluence have been continually hurting for reprints. It's exciting to see several heavy hitters showing up in Standard-level booster packs and will hopefully lead to prices dropping quite a bit for them as a result.

Image of the Special Guest version of Sliver Overlord

Additionally, we got our first taste of what the Special Guests will look like. Only Sliver Overlord was previewed officially, though, showing the card receiving a classic sci-fi movie poster or pulp novel look fitting of the set's setting. It's expected that the rest of these will bear a similar look, which will be extremely exciting for Magic players who are also fans of the genre.

Additional Resources

That wraps things up for this first week of Edge of Eternities previews! There's an absurd number of awesome things happening in this set from the story to the art to the designs themselves. I'll be back next week to cover all the rest of these epic cards and discuss the sweet new Commander decks as well. Be sure to check with your local game store for more details on how you can participate in Edge of Eternities events or else check out the set page right here on CoolStuffInc to lock in whatever you need now.
