At the start of 2021, Time Spiral Remastered acted as an experiment to see if the Remastered style of release could work in paper. Previously we'd seen it on Magic Online in the form of Tempest Remastered and later on MTG Arena with sets like Kaladesh Remastered and Amonkhet Remastered. After TSR was such a smash success, Wizards decided to go deeper on the Remastered sets starting with the release of Dominaria Remastered in 2023.
The set showcased the deep history of the beloved plane of Dominaria to help celebrate Magic's 30th anniversary. This came alongside many sets acting as throwbacks to classic settings and storylines involving the plane. There was a lot to love here for players old and new alike, and many new mythics along the way. I'm going to go through, rank them all, and talk about the top ten as well.
Let's get right to it!
- 20. Serra Avatar
- 19. Legacy Weapon
- 18. Worldgorger Dragon
- 17. Nut Collector
- 16. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa
- 15. Lyra Dawnbringer
- 14. Hunting Grounds
- 13. Gauntlet of Power
- 12. Dark Depths
- 11. Test of Endurance
10. Sneak Attack
I think you could make an argument to put Test of Endurance just a little higher to make it worth talking about. After all, it's an infamous card for Commander with no real reprints to speak of. However, Sneak Attack is a card that always wants more reprints to give it better access. I'm giving it a bump here due to the coolness factor of having the classic art available in retro frame once again.
9. Time Stretch
This one is for a very specific type of player in Commander, but for that sort of player, this reprint was massive. Time Stretch was a fairly expensive card for quite some time until it was inevitably reprinted here. This reprint crashed the price, owing to the fact that only players who wanted access to every extra turn spell wanted to have better access to it.
8. Sylvan Library
Sylvan Library is an absolute staple of Eternal and casual play alike, providing plenty of card draw and selection to a color that frequently lacks it. Typically, I'd rank this a fair bit higher as I think it's much better than several cards on this list. However, it also just saw a reprint a couple years prior in Commander Collection: Green which in many places was still readily available by this point in time. More copies are always quite welcome, and it still commands a strong price, but at the time it felt a touch underwhelming thanks to that previous product.
7. Urza, Lord High Artificer
For a good while, Urza was red hot thanks to the combo of being super playable in both Modern and Commander, as well as being a favorite in Cubes and even playable in Legacy. However, by this point his Modern play had dwindled and he wasn't quite as in demand. Despite this, there was enough love for him in Commander to have this be quite an impactful reprint that was welcome for many players all the same - particularly having just gotten The Brothers' War.
6. Urza's Incubator
Speaking of Urza, his Incubator is a classic of casual typal decks throughout Magic's history. Heck, it was one of the first rares I ever owned, having opened it from the Urza's Destiny Battle Surge precon. However, despite the card's popularity, it hadn't seen a reprint since Commander 2015 and its deck's reprint in Commander Anthology II. As a result, this provided the card's first major reprint in years, providing Commander players everywhere far better access to the sweet artifact.
5. No Mercy
With the only exception possibly being the next card on this list, the card that most desperately needed a reprint from this set has to be No Mercy. Barring the prohibitively expensive Amonkhet Invocation and a judge foil, this hadn't seen a single major reprint since its original printing in Urza's Legacy. That made it tremendously inaccessible for years and this huge reprint provided plenty of new copies to players everywhere who needed them.
4. Last Chance
Last Chance was similar to Time Stretch in that players wanted extra copies, but this one was far more direly in need of a reprint. The card was only ever printed in two sets: Portal and Starter 1999. Prior to this reprint, each of those versions went as high as $100 each before a low-print Secret Lair reprinted it. This impacted the price a moderate amount, but the reprint here ensured players could get it beyond those with the deepest pockets or access to rare, barely printed releases.
3. Yawgmoth, Thran Physician
While Urza's play had long since been relegated to the world of Commander after diminishing in Modern play, Yawgmoth remained a Constructed mainstay. At this time, Golgari Yawgmoth decks were all the rage in Modern, making copies of Yawgmoth a fairly hot commodity at the time. With the only printings previously being Modern Horizons and Time Spiral Remastered, this reprint was perfectly timed for all those Modern players needing their playsets.
2. Vampiric Tutor
The four Mirage block tutors are all mainstays of the Commander experience. However, only one was in the set at mythic and that was the all-timer of Vampiric Tutor. This extremely powerful spell was (and still is) an absolute staple of the format and was huge here despite the somewhat recent reprint in Commander Legends. At the time it was all the more necessary as Game Changers were not yet a thing, so coupled with the all-new Richard Kane Ferguson borderless art, it was easily one of the biggest reasons to buy packs of Dominaria Remastered.
1. Force of Will
If you are even remotely interested in playing Legacy, Force of Will is simply a must. Reprints of this legendary spell have been far and few between that it's no surprise that every time it's printed again, it's number one of any top cards list like this. It took the top place on my lists for both Eternal Masters and Double Masters for this very reason. The need for more copies of this is constant, especially with the rise of cEDH, so it easily reaches the top this time as well - particularly thanks to two new arts this time around.
