Bonus Flavor
Hey, it’s Mike, I’ve thrown a few books in order to distract Ant. While he is busy frantically closing and putting them back in their proper order in his library, let me give you a little bonus flavor this week.
I like to envision Vorthos as three siblings, one being a storyline junkie (the reader), one who loves the names and flavor text (the writer), and the other who creates the beautiful (the artist). You can see a full cleaving of the Vorthos triad in the Champs promotional cards, zooming in on the painting only, utterly stripping away the flavor text and letting the art breathe. By doing so, the storyline can speak a little deeper, as you see more of the image and the immersion of the piece presents itself.
I don’t think this should be a commonplace occurrence, but it begs the question of whether basic lands should have flavor text in full-art judge foils and the like to utterly immerse a player in the flavor. These cards exemplify that strategy, and I hope we return to it soon.
