Amy Rose: 10 Equipments to Run

Reddit

Hold onto your hats, everyone, because things are about to get weird. Wizards of the Coast is putting out a set of Sonic the Hedgehog themed Secret Lairs and we're all now asking ourselves how fast we want to go! Actually, we may well be asking how we feel about Commander turning more and more into Super Smash Bros with every passing year, but love them or not - they are part of our game and things are likely only going to keep getting weirder.

Today I'm going to be taking a look at Amy Rose from the Secret Lair X Sonic: Friends and Foes release. They are also putting out a Secret Lair X Sonic: Turbo Gear release full of re-skinned equipment and a Secret Lair X Sonic: Chasing Adventure release with sonic-themed art for a bunch of popular cards that pair well with our new Sonic commanders.

You can check out the superdrop here. This product will be available starting on July 14 online and at WPN stores on August 21 in non-foil.

Instead of trotting out a decklist, in true Sonic style, I need to write fast, and putting together a thoughtful EDH brew takes time! Instead of 100 cards, I'm going to share my top 10 equipment for Amy Rose. Before we dive into that list, let's take a look at what she brings to the game.

Amy Rose

This four-mana pink Hedgehog Warrior is in Red and White (because that makes pink) and has a decent 3/3 stat line. Amy Rose has haste and whenever she attacks I get to attach up to one target Equipment to her. Then up to one other target attacking creature gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is Amy Rose's power.

You could build a fun and playable Amy Rose deck with any set of equipment and equipment support cards along with a healthy dash of extra combat step spells to take advantage of that "end of turn" caveat. From commons and uncommons to a deck full of Swords of X and Y, there is fun to be had with Amy Rose.

As for my top 10 equipment, let's race down that straightaway!

Before we dive into the actual top 10, let's make some space for some...

Honorable Mentions

Hero's Blade
Obsidian Battle-Axe
Chainsaw

The first two cards shown above equip for free! Why would you want that for Amy Rose, when she lets you equip something to her for free when she attacks? Because there's a very good chance you'll want to equip multiple things to her on the turn she attacks. Hero's Blade gives +3/+2 and can be equipped for free to a legendary creature you control when it enters. Obsidian Battle-Axe gives +2/+1 and haste and can be equipped for free to any Warrior creature that comes into play.

Chainsaw will deal 3 damage to up to one target creature when it enters play, and whenever one or more creatures die you'll put a rev counter on it. Equipped creature gets +X/+0 where X is the number of rev counters on it. Hammers may be more fitting for a Sonic themed deck, but with enough death triggers, Chainsaw could give Amy Rose a nice boost in power for both her and another attacking creature.

Conqueror's Flail
Commander's Plate
Sunforger

10. Conqueror's Flail

This nifty flail gives +1/+1 for each color among permanents you control. +2/+2 isn't a big deal, but it also locks your tablemates out of being able to cast spells during your turn! For a combat deck that can be a big deal, as players will often want to wait until they know if you're going to be attacking them before they respond with a removal spell. With this equipped, if they wait for your turn to start, they'll be locked out of casting spells.

9. Commander's Plate

This suit of armor gives +3/+3, which is nice but also not a big deal. The reason this card is on my list is that it gives Amy Rose protection from each color that's not in my commander's color identity. It won't help her dodge removal from White and Red, but it will probably let her swing unblocked at someone.

8. Sunforger

These three cards are grouped because they all allow me to protect Amy Rose, but Sunforger could be much higher on the list. It gives +4/+0 and can be unattached for a Red and White mana to let me search my library for a Red or White instant spell with mana value 4 or less. I get to cast that spell for free. The throttle on any Sunforger deck is usually the cost to keep equipping it so you can use that ability. Amy Rose gets around that, and she'll be super happy to tutor up all kinds of different spells depending upon what you need at the moment. Just remember to remove Sunforger after you've gotten your attack trigger so you can give another attacking creature +4/+0.

Kaldra Compleat
Argentum Armor
Blackblade Reforged

7. Kaldra Compleat

My number seven pick has to go to the 7 mana Kaldra Compleat. It enters attached to a 0/0 Germ token, and Amy Rose will be happy to bypass its seven mana equip cost. It gives +5/+5, first strike, trample, indestructible, haste, and whenever this creature deals combat damage to a creature, exile that creature. The other Kaldra cards are also worth looking at for Amy Rose, but this one pretty much does it all.

6. Argentum Armor

At 6 mana, Argentum Armor is a relic of the past, but being able to skip that hefty equip cost of 6 mana makes it playable for Amy Rose. Getting +6/+6, giving another attacking creature +6/+0, and destroying target permanent when she attacks make it worth that high casting cost.

5. Blackblade Reforged

If the goal is to pump Amy Rose so she can pump another creature when you attack, it's hard not to include Blackblade Reforged. This legendary sword gives +1/+1 for each land you control. The longer the game goes, the better it gets, provided you're actually hitting your land drops. Sword of the Animist might be worth throwing in to help with that, but Blackblade Reforged is a great way to increase your damage output.

Colossus Hammer
Two-Handed Axe
Genji Glove

4. Colossus Hammer

The most on-theme equipment for Amy Rose is probably Colossus Hammer. At one mana, this is the cheapest card on my list, but that is balanced out by an equip cost of 8. It gives +10/+10 and the equipped creature loses flying. In some cases, Blackblade Reforged will be better, but this is a fantastic early game card for her.

3. Two-Handed Axe

With this equipment you can pay one and a Red to cast Sweeping Cleave, giving target creature you control double strike until end of turn. Then you can cast it for 3 mana and use Amy Rose's attack trigger to equip it if you don't have another 2 mana available. When equipped creature attacks, you double its power until end of turn. You choose how you want to stack your triggers, so you'd equip it first, then you'd double Amy Rose's power, and then you'd give target attacking creature +X/+0 where X is her power. With other equipment on her, this could get very silly, very fast.

2. Genji Glove

Double strike is a great way to help your attacker survive combat, but Genji Glove has an extra ability that puts it near the top of my list. Whenever equipped creature attacks, if it's the first combat phase of the turn I'll untap it and after this phase there is an additional combat phase. This notably won't untap any other creatures, so unless my creatures have vigilance I'll have a hard time pumping the same "other attacking creature" twice in the same turn.

1. Your Buddy's Best Equipment

The Reality Chip
Power Fist
Lucille

Amy Rose can't run any of the equipment shown above, no matter how much you might want to equip a children's cartoon character with Negan's barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bat when you head into battle.

The reason I'm showing you these three cards specifically is to emphasize the fact that Amy Rose can attack target equipment to her, even if you don't control that equipment.

What that means is that your buddy's best equipment is only safe if he's somehow found a way to protect it. Very few equipment decks put effort into protecting their equipment. Not only does this make Amy Rose insanely versatile, it lets you use her as a form of removal! Your tablemates can equip their Mask of Griselbrand to one of their creatures on their turn, as they still control the card, but you'll get to steal it again just by attacking.

The only caveat is that if you run across any equipment that directly benefits the controller of the card and not the equipped creature, you may end up giving your buddy those triggers. Steal a Sword of Body and Mind and the trigger to make the 2/2 green Wolf creature token will still happen for the owner of the sword. If it's not your sword, you don't get the token.

Final Thoughts

I didn't expect to be writing a column about a Sonic the Hedgehog card this week, but life is full of surprises. If you buy into this Secret Lair, I think it's obvious there are other more powerful cards in the release, but you should be able to get up to a lot of fun with Amy Rose. She's not going to automatically become the best Boros equipment commander in the format, but she is absolutely playable and can be built at a range of power levels.

I don't think you'll get very far trying to build Amy Rose as a high power / cEDH deck. Equipment and combat strategies generally fall off in effectiveness if you're not just resorting to a Godo, Bandit Warlord or Najeela, the Blade Blossom combo (though technically still combat) wincon. With enough tutors and the right equipment you should absolutely be able to play against strong decks and have a shot. You might even get cheeky and use Amy's +X/+0 trigger to kill folks with attackers like Tine Shrike and Shriek Raptor, both of which have flying and infect.

That's all I've got for today. I hope you enjoyed this top 10 list. You can find my regular column about commander deck-building on Mondays under the "Commanderrumnations" header here at CoolStuffInc. Thanks for reading!
