Weekly Sale Commander - Spring Forward Sale

Reddit

Hi folks. Welcome to the Weekly Sale Column. This column will show you some cards on sale that might spice up your lists or inspire something completely new. These lists will usually be Commander lists in Bracket 3, so you'll be able to play these in any Bracket 3 (or higher) pods.

If you want to play in lower pods, just swap out the Game Changers for other choices; if you want to compete with Bracket 4 and 5 pods, add more along with some other competitive combos.

Keep in mind that the Game Changers in your deck aren't the only thing that moves you up and down a bracket. Your intent with your deck; inclusions of other interactions, engines, and combos; and overall playgroup should all be factors in your bracket!

Remember that the weekly sale ends on Sunday night at 11:59 PM EST, so you have until then to get your cards ordered.

Daylight Savings

Welcome to the Spring Forward Sale. On March 8th at 2 AM local time, we will be moving our clocks forward an hour. This sale echoes that a bit, by focusing on Haste. We're definitely playing Red this week!

When I was deciding this deck, I was between two different Commanders. One is Ognis, the Dragon's Lash. That was the logical choice, it's in some solid Hasty aggressive colors, Red being the most important one here.

It was at that point that I remembered a somewhat newer card I haven't gotten to brew withyet. Enter the one, the only, Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic is a delightful Jeskai Commander where having lots of Creatures with both Haste and Flash will benefit you greatly. You'll make them bigger whenever Sonic attacks and you'll make tapped Treasure tokens whenever they're dealt damage (including Sonic), so we want combat to be full of as many creatures as possible.

'"To go fast or to go faster. That is the question" -Sonic the Hedgehog, probably?'

- Matt Newnam

To kick things off, we've got quite a few creatures that just have Haste on their own. Charming Scoundrel has the utility to rummage (Discard then Draw) or make a Treasure, that third mode is not needed here. Loyal Apprentice will make us Flying tokens that also have Haste, but only until the end of turn, so attack with them and hope your opponent blocks to trigger Sonic.

Captain Lannery Storm both makes a Treasure and will benefit from Sonic creating lots of Treasures by getting stronger during that turn. Kilo, Apogee Mind is fantastic here because it both has Haste and also Proliferates all the +1/+1 counters we're getting from Sonic. Screaming Nemesis will strike fear in your opponents because it can shut down their ability to gain life for the rest of the game.

Captain Lannery Storm
Anger

Anger might have Haste, but we'd honestly rather it just be in the Graveyard so all of our creatures have haste. Enduring Courage might not have Haste, but it gives everything that comes after it Haste and a nice little pump, which will be great for some of our token generators that we'll talk about later.

Detritivore also doesn't have Haste normally, but a creature that gets cast off of Suspend automatically has Haste, which still fits what we're doing. Ending on the high end, we have Molten Primordial to Threaten a creature from each of our opponents and Aurelia, the Warleader, an extremely powerful game-ender if left unchecked.

Did you know that Red has a great arsenal of token generators that all have Haste? Rite of the Raging Storm will basically create chaos at your table, giving everyone a 5/1 with Haste each turn. Assemble the Legion gives you a never-ending supply of the Boros Legion, growing and growing, and all with Haste.

Somewhat similarly to Assemble the Legion, Urabrask's Forge makes one large token that grows each turn. Forth Eorlingas! will make as many tokens as mana you spend while also finding you a crown to be the Monarch, and Tempt with Vengeance will quite literally tempt your opponents to accept your gift of tokens, but you get some either way.

'"My name is Sonic the Hedgehog and I'm the fastest hedgehog alive." -Sonic the Hedgehog, watching The Flash, probably?'

-Matt Newnam

The head canon I just came up with where Sonic is watching The Flash and pretending to be Grant Gustin's Barry Allen is pretty great. Secret Lair R&D, I'm full of ideas for you.

Our next section, if you didn't pick up on it, is all about Flash. Sonic the Hedgehog's ability doesn't just work for Haste, but it also works for Creatures with Flash.

Archivist of Oghma
Faerie Mastermind
Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel

Archivist of Oghma will draw you so many cards in a pod with Green players because you just know they're going to be searching their library for lands all the time. Cathar Commando has the added benefit of also being a Naturalize-on-a-stick. Faerie Mastermind, courtesy of Yuta Takahashi, will draw us tons of cards, even if our opponents don't want to because we can force them with its ability.

Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel will eventually let us cast free spells, but will start us off with some draws. Similar to Archivist of Oghma, Wan Shi Tong, Librarian also draws us cards when our opponents search, but it also gets bigger in his search for knowledge.

Flash is great because of the different types of interaction you get, from Airbending Creatures and Spells with Aang, Swift Savior to redirecting your opponent's Swords to Plowshares with Hydroelectric Specimen (assuming we didn't play it as Hydroelectric Laboratory). Finally, we have The Unagi of Kyoshi Island, our high-end Creature with Flash that also draws cards.

Change the Game

For our Game Changers, we went with one of each of Sonic's colors.

Smothering Tithe
Fierce Guardianship
Jeska's Will

In White, we have Smothering Tithe. Amassing Treasure tokens helps cards like Professional Face-Breaker, Goldspan Dragon, and Captain Lannery Storm do well. It could even let you win with the secret alternate win condition - Knuckles the Echidna's triggered ability. I expect picture proof if you pull that off using this list.

In Blue, we went with Fierce Guardianship. I tend to like Fierce Guardianship over Force of Will in decks where I always want my Commander in play versus a deck that I mostly just want for the color identity of my Commander. Our deck is built around Sonic, so Fierce is better, I believe. If you prefer Force of Will or something else, swap it in, it's not detrimental.

Finally, in Red, we went with Jeska's Will. Ideally, we're playing this as early as possible to benefit from as much mana as it can provide us. Our deck is mostly Red compared to White or Blue, so the Red mana from Jeska's Will has the potential to propel us super quick in the early game, but it can also be great card advantage in the late game.

This deck lives pretty firmly in Bracket 3, but there is exactly one card I chose to omit here that will push you into Bracket 4 and higher - Dualcaster Mage. Dualcaster Mage is a great Red Flash creature that copies spells. The reason we've omitted it is because it is an early-two-card combo with Twinflame and any of its variants (Electroduplicate, Heat Shimmer, etc.) and would not fit into what is commonly considered Bracket 3.

Conclusion

I've never been one to enjoy Spring Forward, I'm more of a Fall Back kinda guy. Good luck to my fellow parents when we all lose an hour of sleep, hopefully this list will make up that hour and end lots of games for you quickly.
