The fifth installment of the Rarity Collection series is here with the latest and greatest luxury rare cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! Rarity Collections are Yu-Gi-Oh!'s premiere reprint sets with many competitive staples and trending archetypal cards. They're terrific sets for players who are looking to get a hold of some staples for new decks or bling out their deck with upgrades to existing rarities.
This year, Rarity Collection V introduced Extended Art cards, high rarity cards that extend beyond the normal border. These "Overframe" cards are a must-have for collectors and fans of the cards' respective archetypes. Also new is the inclusion of special variant art cards. These are reprints of cards with catchphrases in English or Japanese making the cards even more exciting.
There are over 150 cards in this set and a lot to discuss but I've got you covered with the highlights. Here's a look at some of what you can look forward to out of Rarity Collection V.
Top 10 Best Cards from Yu-Gi-Oh! Rarity Collection V
- 10. Trap Dustshoot
- 9. Mementoal Tecuhtlica - Combined Creation
- 8. Snake-Eyes Doomed Dragon
- 7. Radiant Typhoon Vision
- 6. Kashtira Fenrir
- 5. Chaos Angel
- 4. Blue-Eyes White Dragon
- 3. Dominus Purge
- 2. Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon
- 1. Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon
With a set this huge, I would be remiss to just list all of the 10 Overframe cards you can pull and call it a day. Instead, I've included the best cards to get your hands for a variety of reasons, such as competitive usage, reprint value, rarity improvement, etc. Let's dig in.
10. Trap Dustshoot
It's always nice to give players of older formats a reason to stay engaged with current products and that's what we see here with Trap Dustshoot. Forbidden in Advanced format since 2012, Trap Dustshoot is one of the oldest, most iconic Trap cards in the game. It's effect that lets you look at your opponent's hand and get rid of a monster is very strong, even by today's standards.
Due to being out of competitive rotation, there weren't a ton of reprints for this card, making it somewhat hard to come by. Now you can choose from several rarities to play this old school Trap. Shoutout to all the GOAT and Edison format players, this one's for you.
9. Mementoal Tecuhtlica - Combined Creation
Better late than never. That's how I'd describe the arrival of Mementoal Tecuhtlica - Combined Creation in this reprint set. Memento was gunning for one of the top spots in the competitive scene last year and is still seeing tournament tops in recent months. We saw other members of the Memento archetype get reprinted in Quarter Century Stampede, leaving just the boss monster out of the fun until now.
Combined Creation is a must-have for the deck as well. It hits the field with a huge 5000 ATK stat and the ability to attack all monsters your opponent controls. The deck pairs well with other Fiend strategies like Fiendsmith and Goblin Bikers. There's also the wombo-combo of using Combined Creation with Mementotlan Cranium Burst to negate all your opponent's monster effects.
8. Snake Eyes Doomed Dragon
Snake-Eyes Doomed Dragon was originally slept on by the community at large. It was released after the fall of Snake-Eyes as the top competitive deck, and many duelists overlooked its powerful effects. It wasn't until the Millenium engine took off, using cards like Sengenjin Wakes from a Millennium to generate cheap bodies to the field, that the card saw widespread competitive usage.
If used to go first, Snake-Eyes Doomed Dragon gives you a Level Eight body to pair with another monster for a Rank Eight XYZ play such as The Zombie Vampire. Going second, Doomed Dragon can rely on its own effect to push a monster into the Spell and Trap Card Zone, getting around many protection effects of the modern game. Decks like Crystal Beast can naturally take advantage of its unique summoning condition.
7. Radiant Typhoon Vision
The Mystical Space Typhoon archetype got some love in Rarity Collection V with the inclusion of Radiant Typhoon Vision in the main pool of cards. This card gives players some draw power with its effect that lets you draw two cards then discard any Quick-Play Spell from your hand. Alternatively, you can add one MST (Mystical Space Typhoon) from your deck or GY to your hand.
The effect is generic enough to run in decks that utilize a lot of Quick-Play Spells like Radiant Typhoon and Sky Striker. You might also see it run alongside decks using popular cards like Super Polymerization, The Fallen & the Virtuous, or the Forbidden cards. The rarity upgrade from the original common rarity printing is a welcome one.
6. Kashtira Fenrir
Kashtira Fenrir has been a staple main deck monster in Yu-Gi-Oh! since it was first released. Its powerful effect to banish a card face-down and add another Kashtira monster from deck to hand is very strong in a variety of situations.
Duelists are always tinkering with ways to incorporate Fenrir into their main decks or side decks. Especially since it's currently unlimited in the TCG while being completely banned in the OCG.
The applications of Kashtira Fenrir are vast. It can be used alongside another Level Seven monster for a Rank Seven XYZ play, used in the hand as fusion material fodder in a deck like Dracotail, or just as a 2400 ATK beat stick.
It's something like a Swiss army knife of Yu-Gi-Oh! This isn't the first reprint we've seen for the card but it's definitely the most impactful.
5. Chaos Angel
Chaos Angel was one of the first cards announced as a reprint for Rarity Collection V because of its strength as a boss monster. It has found its way into many decklists due to its generic Synchro summoning condition that allows you to treat one Light or Dark monster you control as a Tuner.
That, combined with its offensive effect to banish a card on the field as well as its built-in protection make it a serious threat.
4. Blue-Eyes White Dragon
Let's not forget the most iconic card in all of Yu-Gi-Oh! on this list. Blue-Eyes White Dragon is back and better than ever.
Blue-Eyes received the special variant art treatment with Japanese Kanji meaning "strongest" printed over the artwork. That's fitting for the strongest normal monster in terms of raw attack. Nevertheless, this is a great one for the collection.
3. Dominus Purge (and Dominus Impulse)
Now we're getting into the heavy hitters with the Overframe cards, starting with Dominus Purge. Dominus Purge, Dominus Impulse, and Songs of the Dominators all received reprints in Rarity Collection V but only Dominus Purge comes as an Overframe card. It's also noteworthy that beside the Overframe, Dominus Purge and Impulse only appear as Platinum Secret Rare, Collector's Rare, and Ultimate Rare, adding to their illusiveness.
Still, if you haven't gotten your hands on these competitive staples, here's another chance. Both cards are used to shut down your opponent's plays but have a tradeoff of not being able to activate effects of monsters of certain attributes if used from the hand.
2. Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon
Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon is another iconic boss monster that received an Overframe version.
We've seen more applications for this card appear recently with the new Dark Magician support splashing its way into various decks. As a reminder, Dark Magician of Destruction can be used alongside Diabellstar the Black Witch as an engine to easily summon Dragoon.
Now as an Overframe, it can look even more imposing as it wipes out your opponent's life points!
1. Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon
Branded players will rejoice at getting their hands on the new Overframe Mirrorjade the Iceblade Dragon. Pulling the starlight version of this card is like winning the lottery for this set. Even with all the recent support Branded has received, like Fallen of the White Dragon and Ecclesia and the Dark Dragon, players still make room in their Extra Decks for Mirrorjade. It has stood the test of time and that's incredible.
Conclusion
Rarity Collection V has plenty of cards that duelists have been eager to get their hands on. It also marks the start of a new rarity in Extended Art cards that will be the chase cards moving forward.
We now have more ways to bling out of decks before sending our opponents to the Shadow Realm.
