The Tarkir: Dragonstorm Legendaries to Build Around in Commander

Reddit

Now that the storm has settled, Tarkir: Dragonstorm has made an exceptional impact on the player base. We've received a load of cool cards and tons of new synergies upon the return to Tarkir and some of the most exciting cards have been the legendaries. Excluding the Commander decks, Tarkir: Dragonstorm launched with 16 unique legendary creatures. They all have varying power levels and tons of cool flavor. So, let's take a handful of them and evaluate their potential to be built around.

1. Sidisi, Regent of the Mire

Sidisi, REgent of the Mire

Sidisi, Regent of the Mire, possibly has one of the coolest abilities in this set. We can tap and sacrifice a creature to get a Birthing Pod effect. Instead of our deck, Sidisi searches our graveyard giving us an awesome opportunity to use self mill and discard outlets to fill our yard and bring back some heavy hitters. Some might call her, The Unearthing Pod.

2. Taigam, Master Opportunist

Taigam, Master Opportunist

Taigam, Master Opportunist is a great build around for the combo players out there. His flurry ability lets you copy your second spell each turn, exile the original and then cast it again as it gains suspend. High mana value cards like Dig Through Time and Treasure Cruise are perfect for Taigam, generating hand advantage immediately and again in a few turns.

3. Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant

Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant

Do you like Dragons? In the lore for MTG, Sarkhan really, really likes dragons. Which is perfect because Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant turns into a dragon! For 2 mana, Sarkhan comes down early and gets buffed as we fill the skies with our thunder of dragons! Sarkhan has built-in evasion when you cast a dragon, too! So, make sure you get your lethal commander damage in!

4. Anafenza, Unyielding Lineage

Anafenza, Unyielding Lineage

Anafenza, Unyielding Lineage fits in a few different archetypes. At baseline, she's great when a board wipe happens, we can recover quickly by refilling our board with 2/2s. She's great in aristocats as she gives us more creatures to sacrifice and she can grow bigger if we need her to deal some massive damage.

5. Felothar, Dawn of the Abzan

Felothar, Dawn of the Abzan

Back in the original Tarkir Block, Abzan lived for +1/+1 counter synergy. So, Felothar, Dawn of the Abzan is a wonderful return to form. Stack up counter after counter to beef up your board then drop a card like Abzan Falconer to fly over your opponent's creatures and secure a victory! If you like going to the red zone, then this version of Felothar is for you!

6. Kotis, the Fangkeeper

Kotis, the Fangkeeper

Kotis, the Fangkeeper is a monster when it comes to stealing cards from your opponents deck. The 2/1 body with no evasion isn't perfect, but the fact that they are indestructible makes up for it. Kotis just begs for combat tricks, they even wont die to a Berserk! Find a way to give Kotis flying, trample or deathtouch and watch the value sink in.

7. Neriv, Heart of the Storm

Neriv, Heart of the Storm

Neriv, Heart of the Storm want's all your creatures with haste and myriad. It's as easy as that. Use cards like Sneak Attack to drop big beaters and get in for tons of damage. Take advantage of the new Mobilize mechanic to put creatures into play tapped and attacking. There is nothing Neriv wants more than to bring the pain!

8. Teval, Arbiter of Virtue

Teval, Arbiter of Virtue

Teval, Arbiter of Virtue gives us a unique design space. We're likely playing Teval in a format where we can take advantage of overcosted spells and a fully padded life total. Commander seems ideal. We can take several turns to fill our graveyard and then upon casting Teval we can start churning out over-costed spells to overwhelm our opponents. Did someone say Eldrazi?

9. Narset, Jeskai Waymaster

Narset, Jeskai Waymaster

Narset, Jeskai Waymaster gives us something that Jeskai has in spades, card draw. But it gives it to us with a unique twist. Ideally we want to be multi spelling each turn to take advantage of Narset's ability. This gives us an environment that is perfect for a storm deck. If we falter on our storm turn, or we don't manage to take out the whole table, we'll get to refill our hand and be able to go back at it again.

10. Betor, Kin to All

Betor, Kin to All

The Abzan in this expansion seem to care about one thing, toughness. Betor, Kin to All seems to channel that energy and rewards us for having a defensive board. If we have Betor out along with one wall, we've guaranteed at least drawing a card at the end of our turn. But the benefits only increase from here. If we have 20 power we get to untap all of our creatures, taking advantage of Doran, the Siege Tower like effects. Then if we hit 40, we become the ire of the table and cut everyone's life total in half.

With the advent of Tarkir: Dragonstorm we saw a lot of cool new and innovative cards. Hopefully this list will give you a few ideas to set up a new Commander deck or find a home for one of these legendaries in your favorite Standard archetype. As usual, the only hindrance is your own imagination. Good luck and have fun, gamers!
