Landfall may be my favorite ability in Magic. It's such a low investment, as playing lands is a natural part of the game, and stacking a reward on top of this naturally occurring game action almost feels like you're getting a deal that's too good to be true. So, any set that is said to feature landfall as a primary ability automatically makes me sit up and take notice.
Edge of Eternities is such a set, and now that the full set is out, I feel confident in saying this is the best landfall set we've ever had. There are so many different ways to attack a landfall deck now, and it may take weeks for the player base to figure out the best landfall deck...
Or should that be decks? It really feels like landfall is deep enough right now to provide multiple avenues of deckbuilding. With this in mind, I decided my deckbuilding muscles a bit (feeble though they may be) and see if I could come up with a landfall deck for different play styles.
First up, let's take a look at your basic aggressive landfall deck. Mono-Green Tifa Lockhart landfall decks have started to show the power of the deck recently, but the printing of Genemorph Imago has me interested in splashing for Blue. There are so many good Simic lands in Standard now that the splash feels practically free.
Simic Landfall Aggro | FIN Standard | Travis Hall
- Creatures (29)
- 1 Icetill Explorer
- 2 Mightform Harmonizer
- 2 Springbloom Druid
- 2 Starfield Vocalist
- 3 Bristly Bill, Spine Sower
- 3 Tifa Lockhart
- 4 Genemorph Imago
- 4 Mossborn Hydra
- 4 Sazh's Chocobo
- 4 Traveling Chocobo
- Instants (6)
- 4 Snakeskin Veil
- 2 Into the Flood Maw
- Lands (23)
- 1 Island
- 9 Forest
- 2 Escape Tunnel
- 3 Botanical Sanctum
- 4 Breeding Pool
- 4 Fabled Passage
I'm pushing a few new cards here just to see how they shake out. Genemorph Imago plays very well will Sazh's Chocobo, Tifa Lockhart, Mossborn Hydra, and Bristly Bill, as it pumps their base power before the bonuses from the +1/+1 counters are added.
Mightform Harmonizer turns any one of your creatures into a Tifa, and becomes a must kill card the second it hits the board.
Starfield Vocalist is a second doubling effect in the vein of Traveling Chocobo.
Icetill Explorer ensures that you will always have lands to play, as a single Fabled Passage/Escape Tunnel will allow you to go nuts with landfall triggers. It's possible this should be a 3or 4 of in the deck.
While I'm excited about the possibilities of the aggressive landfall decks, the arrival of the shocklands gives me hope that we might finally start seeing 3-color decks evolve in the format. Sultai is one of the color combinations to receive multiple shocks, so the mana should be very good with shocks/verges.
The next deck is a bit of a combo deck, in that you may put every land in your deck onto the battlefield and then have to figure out how to win.
Sultai Landfall Combo | FIN Standard | Travis Hall
- Creatures (24)
- 2 Marang River Regent
- 3 Famished Worldsire
- 3 Lumra, Bellow of the Woods
- 4 Galactic Wayfarer
- 4 Iridescent Vinelasher
- 4 Llanowar Elves
- 4 Overlord of the Balemurk
- Instants (4)
- 4 Bitter Triumph
- Sorceries (6)
- 2 Winternight Stories
- 4 Lich-Knights' Conquest
The goal here is to get a copy of Famished Worldsire and Lumra, Bellow of the Woods into your graveyard so that you can return both with Lich-Knight's Conquest. Stack the triggers so that you sacrifice all of your land to the Worldsire, grab a bunch of lands from your deck and put them onto the battlefield, and then return the sacrificed lands with Lumra. If you have an Iridescent Vinelasher on the battlefield at the time, it's possible that you kill your opponent immediately. If not, you have two humongous creatures in play and you're probably drawing nothing but gas the rest of the game.
Finally, let's take a look at a midrange landfall deck. Like Sultai, Temur gets access to two shocklands, and a much better manabase than it had in the previous Standard format. Tannuk, Memorial Ensign is the main card from Edge of Eternities I wanted to slot in here, though Icetill Explorer and Consult the Star Charts make an appearance as well.
Temur Midrange Landfall | FIN Standard | Travis Hall
- Creatures (14)
- 2 Icetill Explorer
- 4 Overlord of the Hauntwoods
- 4 Skyserpent Seeker
- 4 Tannuk, Memorial Ensign
- Instants (2)
- 2 Consult the Star Charts
- Sorceries (10)
- 2 Doppelgang
- 4 Ill-Timed Explosion
- 4 Stock Up
- Enchantments (6)
- 3 Dragonback Assault
- 3 Roaring Furnace // Steaming Sauna
- Artifacts (2)
- 2 Ancient Cornucopia
- Lands (26)
- 2 Mountain
- 3 Forest
- 3 Island
- 3 Thornspire Verge
- 3 Willowrush Verge
- 4 Breeding Pool
- 4 Fabled Passage
- 4 Stomping Ground
Tannuk feels like a very powerful card that will show up once someone figures out how to crack it. Having a 4 toughness is huge here, as it survives a Dragonback Assault, and cards like Overlord of the Hauntwoods, Fabled Passage, and Icetill Explorer should help you hit the draw ability fairly consistently. Late game, I can't wait to burn someone out with Tannuk and Doppelgang.
These decklists are all just a first pass at the format. I look forward to exploring all the different ways these decks can evolve going forward in the new Standard!
