More of the Best of Modern Horizons 2

Reddit

Hello happy people! I hope that you are having an awesome-tastic day today! And if not? I hope it will be by the end of the day! Modern Horizons 2 is a pretty deep set for casual play as well as the Modern format. There are a big number of cards here that I see getting played for formats like Commander. We've already counted down three Top Tens with two honorable mentions each so 36 cards in total.

Check them out here:

  • Week 1 - I have a lot of powerful cards from the set and 11 commons. What hits where and what were my top cards overall? I know you want to check it out here.
  • Week 2 - Here we are counting down many cards from #13 - #24. Well actually I have a tie in here, so we actually have 13 cards across 12 slots. What hits where and what do I think was really good, but not enough to crack my premier Top Ten list? Check it out here!
  • Week 3 - Last week I crafted another group of cards around some awesome cards and some of Modern's favorite cards hit my list, like Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and Murktide Regent. Wanna see?

And there we go! Alright, let's look at our cards today!

Honorable Mention #1 (#48). Myr Scrapling

Myr Scrapling

When I saw this card on the spoiler for the first time, I said to myself, "Wow, the combos!" Casual play loves self-sacrificing cards. This is a one-drop which is easy to cast and recast for just a mana each time. It's an artifact and a creature so you can play into two sets of engines. I love looping it when you control your Commander that you can get to 21 power so you can kill in one Commander Damage hit. I love this lil' thang a lot. It just plays into my happy place.

Honorable Mention #2 (#47). Lucid Dreams

Lucid Dreams

Check out this Blue uncommon! In a typical Commander deck that's not built around a certain card type, you'll have 10-12 instants, 8-10 sorceries, 20-30 creatures, 5-ish planeswalkers, 8-10 artifacts, and 6-8 enchantments as well as all of your lands like fetch lands. Not counting the rare tribal card, there are 7 card types out there. It's very easy to have 5 or 6 when you cast Lucid Dreams without even trying which makes this a 5 or 6 for 1 quite ably. It's almost at the power level of a Draw 7 effect. Now obviously it's a non-starter against graveyard removal so if that's heavily used in your playgroup's metagame, then you'll want to skip this by. But I love it in a typical Commander build.

#46. Scour the Desert

Scour the Desert

Ordered Migration. No card in Abe's Deck of Happiness and Joy has killed more players than Ordered Migration. That's a 3000+ card Highlander multiplayer Five-Color brew. Check out the power of Ordered Migration. The result in most five-color brews is five 1/1 flying Birds. This is also a 5-mana sorcery with White in its cost that makes flying Birds of a 1/1 size. You can see why the new card reminds me of a classic card, right? In a way, Scour the Desert is more reliable than Ordered Migration as you don't have to worry about only having enough land types for three Birds. In another way it's less reliable since it's easier for folks to mess with your graveyard than to mess with your lands. Scour has the potential for a lot more than five 1/1s so it has a better upside. I love it a lot in builds!

#45. Ornithopter of Paradise

Ornithopter of Paradise

This is our third-highest scoring artifact, artifact creature, and common. Check it out! I really like it in casual town. It's a two-mana Birds of Paradise for any color that needs ramp, and it has flying already for carrying equipment, swinging over folks, blocking, and it's got a bigger butt. There's nothing not to like here, from the common cheap status to the great ability to tap for any color of mana as well as flying and swing-ability. Good stuff!

#44. Break the Ice

Break the Ice

Do you know why this 2-drop land destruction spell is here? I'll tell you! It's the nasty overload, which is basically a 6-mana Ruination. It's better than Ruination as it'll take out the commonly played Snow-Covered basics and it's worse than Ruination as there are some lands that don't tap for colorless that are commonly played - like Maze of Ith and Temple Garden. You can play around that by including them in your mana base so that you won't lose anything. It's also good with the non-Overload as you have a Sinkhole for most non-basics and all Snow lands. It's a powerful uncommon. I love it!

#43. Blossoming Calm

Blossoming Calm

This thing is getting play in sideboards in Modern against decks like Burn, where'll you counter a burn spell with it and gain four life. I really like it in formats where you aren't running Blue for counters and you are being targeted by things like discard, burn, and most graveyard removal like Bojuka Bog that targets players. This is really good, and you'll net two castings for things like Guttersnipe and Professor Onyx. It's really strong!

#42. Foundation Breaker

Foundation Breaker

Huh. This is my top-scoring uncommon! Right after three uncommons in a row! And my second-highest scoring evoke Elemental! I like this green guy a lot! Reclamation Sage. Acidic Slime. Those 2-power Green creatures are iconic in casual gaming like Commander. The former only destroys artifacts and enchantments, has less toughness and lacks deathtouch to trade up, but it's two mana less. This comes in between those casting costs with a 2/2 body. I expect it to get played a lot.

Top five time!

#41. Myr Enforcer...er...Sojourner's Companion

Myr Enforcer
Sojourner's Companion

Our second highest-scoring common, 7+ drop, artifact, and artifact creature is this! Affinity still gets played in casual places like Commander where Arcbound Ravager is in 2,725 decks over at EDHREC.com. This thing is better than Myr Enforcer, which is still getting played in kitchen table gaming. I love the artifact landcycling combined with the new set of common artifact mana fixing lands in this set! It can do a lot! You can also cycle this for 2 mana and then return it to the battlefield with recursion cards that care about creatures as well as artifacts. Enjoy!

#40. Scion of Draco

Scion of Draco

I recently added Draco to my Commander Cube and this will likely head in as well as I like to give 4 and 5-color decks things to grab while also adding cards that can be targets for other decks like Dragons getting another option for that tribe. You can check out my Cube over at CubeTutor.com. Much like Commander Legends you draft your leader while you draft. I sent you to the visual spoiler, and you can draft by drafting with seven bots and six packs. There are no duplicates. There are a few additions to my Cube from MH2 like Sword of Hearth and Home and Nettlecyst and Kaldra Compleat and #45 above. There are a bunch of themes in the 1199 cards and each color has multiple (often interlocking) draft archtypes around leaders like Azorius Blink that likes Cloudblazer as well as Bant Midrange that loves it as well. Consider Avatar of the Resolute. It's a 3/2 for two mana that likes Selesnya Aggro and also Simic +1/+1 counters themes.

Anyways, I love Scion there as well as other places, where it can be dropped as cheaply as 2 mana and you could have that on turn 2 with a dual land and Triome, although you are more likely to get it on turn 3-4. Modern Commander loves nonbasic lands with basic types and we just got a common Snow Duals in Kaldheim that add even more and do so on budget. This thang has made Modern decklists as well and I like its ability to add abilities to creatures of various colors and love it in a 5-color Commander brew around a creature that's all five colors like Cromat, where you'll really help out your leader! I really enjoy this Artifact Creature - Dragon. How about you? Oh, and this is our highest scoring mythic rare in our countdown and the top-scoring artifact. And 12-drop!

Now let's turn to the top three!

#39. Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar

Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar

(Yes I copied and pasted that name from Gatherer). Hello fans of Granite Gargoyle, Marble Gargoyle, Lightning Axe, Sauté and friends of The Underworld Cookbook! And Food as well! And artifacts! And discarding! And madness! She's been a big hitter over in Modern and she cracks my fourth list back here as well! She's the most silver-bordered card I've ever seen in black border, and I've played since Legends were the most recent expansion set when cards like Falling Star were legal.

A big name so long that it doesn't have a mana cost? This is a serious cut into MTG lore and really has done a lot of things well. It brings a 1-drop artifact with it, it's just a single mana on the first play if you've discarded, and she's great for the win. In Modern she's a Food queen that also works well with Urza's Saga that can also search for said Cookbook. She's pretty powerful and plays into a new space at the same time!

#38. Sanctum Weaver

Sanctum Weaver

Our penultimate card is this Green enchantment creature! Check it out! It's two mana for an 0/2 and it's a fun Dryad. As this Dryad taps, you can make a number of mana of any color based on your enchantments. This thing is awesome in any enchantment brew as their massive mana maker! It's good in another deck as well - did you notice which one? I'll help you! What word is missing from this tap ability? Exactly! It's "other!" Good catch, my eagle-eyed reader! This thing counts itself when you count enchantments. If you don't control any other enchantments, then the Weaver can always tap for one mana of any color. And it's a 2-drop! That's typically where most modern five-color tappers not named Birds of Paradise fit so you can toss it into any deck with 4-5 colors and it'll always tap for a mana of any color.

Compare it to Sylvan Caryatid. The Caryatid is bigger at 0/3, has hexproof, but cannot swing. And in a Commander deck with 6 or 7 enchantments like Sylvan Library or Land Tax or Phyrexian Arena or Ghostly Prison this thing will tap for more than one mana a non-zero number of times making it better as a 2-drop than many options outside of enchantment heavy brews. The reason I think it's not getting the attention it deserves from other writers and fans of casual table play?

It's the Fox Offering Syndrome in impact.

I wrote about this in an article for you way back in 2013.

Patron of the Kitsune

But here it is in one paragraph form. Check out Patron of the Kitsune. This card is amazing in multiplayer formats like Commander as you gain life any time a creature attacks, yours or others. It's big enough to block and trade or to swing and win. Why isn't it played more at the casual table? Fox offering! It mentally gets assigned to Fox Tribal decks and doesn't get played outside of them. Without fox offering, it would get played more! Without the enchantment tribal aspect of Sanctum Weaver, it'd likely get played more if it just tapped for any color of mana but it's better! Run it! Don't dismiss it like you have Patron of the Kitsune.

#37. Wavesifter

Wavesifter

Our top card is yet another common! This gold house is pretty good in several decks. It's getting played in Modern to make two tokens for two mana that are permanents that can be shuffled in a certain cascade combo brew. It's played at kitchen tables in Commander and other formats. It's awesome! In some ways, this is a gold Mulldrifter. It's a flying Elemental that can be evoked with 2 toughness for 5 mana. Now it does have 3 power, it's got a Green casting cost, and it doesn't draw you cards on arrival but will later on when you have mana to spend. It's less powerful than Mulldrifter, but it's certainly an homage, and Mulldrifter is one of the most iconic cards in Commander with more than 30,500 registered over at EDHREC.com, which is around 10% of decks. A different and less good Mulldrifter will get much play, and it's clearly a winner in decks that like tokens, artifacts, Clues, cards, blink effects and permanents. And that's a lot of decks! And that's why it's my #1 card on today's list!

And there you go! What did you think of my list? Anything in here that you liked or didn't? Any combos I missed? Just let me know in the comments below!
