Recapping Monday's The Hobbit Debuts

MagicCon Amsterdam saw the debut for the next Magic: The Gathering set - The Hobbit. Though the adventure at the convention hall may be over, another is beginning as the rest of the previews kick off.

Today, we get a look at tons of sweet new cards ahead of the set's release in just a few weeks.

Without further ado, let's begin our journey back to Middle-earth.

Awesome New Cards

Online gaming publisher Gamespot had the pleasure of previewing two new cards from The Hobbit.

The first of these is Part in Friendship, a new Green Enchantment with art depicting Thorin's death after The Battle of Five Armies. Having been corrupted by greed following the defeat of Smaug, he reconciles with Bilbo on his deathbed.

This flavorful Rare allows you to find new Creatures when the ones you have in play die. If your board is full of Lands - which should be the case as this card costs - you can put it right into play. Otherwise, it goes into your hand, which can actually be a boon if you're playing Eldrazi and the like.

The other card is The Master of Lake-town, a Black Legendary Creature. This character is well-known for his greed that decimates the quality of life of the town's residents.

As far as Legends go, this card is rather quaint. Most players enjoy when these cards do big, splashy things so that they can play them as their Commanders. Getting to continually mill opponents is huge, though, provided you build around it right.

Even better, if he gets taken out, you'll likely draw plenty of cards in the process. Then you just cast him again and start the process over once more.

Another Legendary Creature was also shown off via TheOneRing.net on Instagram. The Lord of the Eagles represents the leader of a beloved group of giant birds who aid the people of Middle-earth.

If you're deep into Commander, this card may not look like much. Even in a dedicated Flying Creatures-matter deck, it's little more than a low-cost, big idiot.

In more Competitive formats, though, this is a massive threat that you can put into play very fast if you build your board up correctly. It's deceptively powerful and could very well be a real player come August.

We also got this cool Blue Elf from the Japanese Magic: The Gathering page on X, formerly known as Twitter. This marks the return of the rare Mono-Blue Elves first seen in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.

Though the card shown off is in Japanese, fans that speak the language have provided this translation:

Creature - Elf Pilot (Uncommon)
Landfall - Whenever a land you control enters, choose one:

Tap target creature an opponent controls.

Untap target creature you control.

In the past, Retreat to Coralhelm saw some minor play in Modern combo decks, often paired with Knight of the Reliquary.

By activating the Knight's ability to sacrifice a Land to find another Land, you'd trigger Landfall. This untapped the Knight, allowing you to do this as many times as you'd like, leading to an arbitrarily large Creature.

While Retreat to Coralhelm hasn't been a big deal for a few years now, it does provide some redundancy. Even better, Creatures tend to be easier to find than Enchantments, which could make this strategy a breeze to pull off. Even if it lacks the Competitive juice, it's still going to make for an awesome card to play in more Casual settings.

A Pair of Sagas

With this release, we'll get a handful of Sagas. Each of them depicts a song from the story.

The first of these is "Roads Go Ever, Ever On", a song Bilbo sings to himself as he returns to The Shire at the end of the book. It's an excellent way to set up your land drops for future turns, as it finds you a pair of Plains cards.

If you go all-in with this in a Mono-White deck, you can make the final mode become a massive payoff. I'd expect this to be played in select versions of the Mono-White Auras lists that are popular in MTG Arena Standard.

The other is The Misty Mountains Cold, a truncated name for "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold." The song kicks off the journey away from Bilbo's home and recounts the story of the dwarves' history and their lost homeland.

The card reflects this, depicting the tale of the Dwarves' accumulation of wealth and riches. Once they hoard too much, it attracts the great and terrifying dragon, Smaug. They sing as they set off in hopes of taking back their home.

If you can find ways of making yourself tons of treasure, this can very easily become a powerful threat. Not only will you have a 6/6 Dragon token, but you'll also have access to lots of extra mana to deal with anything your opponents throw your way.

This was revealed by Mark Rosewater in his Making Magic column. Not only did he showcase the main set version, but he also unveiled the Bundle promo version, marking the only variant revealed thus far.

Classic Artist Reprints

In addition to all the typical main set goodies, we also got previews for the Classic Art box toppers. Each of these cards is a reprint from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth with new art from a beloved artist from Magic's earlier years.

Today, only one artist's cards are being revealed: Heather Hudson.

Delighted Halfling has been an ever-popular card in both Commander and Cube as a cheap, efficient mana dork. Thanks to the color generating ability, it ensures that your opponents can't counter your Commander as you cast it.

This card also had a modest tenure in both Modern and even Legacy. If you're looking to build a Yawgmoth, Thran Physician or Basking Broodscale Combo deck, you'll almost certainly want to get your hands on a few of these.

The other card Heather revealed was Aragorn and Arwen, Wed.

This card was exclusive to the Tales of Middle-earth starter kit, making it somewhat scarce. Featuring a pair of beloved characters and an effect that's great for fans of +1/+1 counters, it's become rather sought after. All things considered, this is an excellent reprint.

These Classic Artist Reprints can be found in every Play Booster Box and Collector Booster Box. If you open a Collector Booster Pack, you might even find a fancy Surge Foil version of one of these cards inside.

Conclusion

This brings the first day of individual preview cards for The Hobbit to a close. Things are just heating up, though, as there are still almost a full two weeks' worth of cards left to show off.
